  1. Just a guess, but are you using Safari? Communicator doesn't work in safari - get firefox.

It used to be that way and I downloaded the Camino browser to get around it. The Flip4mac plugin for the Safari browser appeared to be the problem. Updates have since been done and I'm using Safari (with flip4mac) and Communicator with no problem now.

  2. I too would have deleted the word. I don't find the word so much offensive anymore as I do boring. However, this doesn't mean it should be left for young eyes to view and even if they have seen or heard the words before, it doesn't mean they should be viewed as condoned by people who are "mental" adults. This word and words like it are used by the inarticulate and uneducated. I've also removed a three pack of condoms that I found in a cache once. Sometimes, the real adults just need to take charge.

Well said and atta boy to ya for saying it.

    +1

  3. Fill in the blank:

    Freedom of ______

If the kid can read, they've probably heard that word a thousand times now. FYI

With "Freedom of ______" comes responsibility. Just because you CAN do it doesn't make it right.

"If the kid can read, they've probably heard that word a thousand times now. FYI"

You're making quite an assumption there.

  4. I completely agree with all of the opinions. I think it is a moneygrab by Groundspeak. My wife and I got into this hobby as a FREE way to get outside with the kids. I really think having to pay to see some caches kinda goes against what caching was started for, in my eyes. I am just a newbie with less than a year in, but we've found over 300 regular caches and are kinda running out in our local area.

Maybe if a cache had to be rated and once it reached a certain point, then it could be moved to a Premium. I just don't see a reason to pay $30/year to find more LPCs. From what I've seen, that's what many of them are. There are a couple of TB Hotels in the area that are premiums, but we find enough without it.

Anyway, to me, it seems to go against the ideals of geocaching, but it is up to the owners. For me, even if I do pony up the cash to upgrade, I'll never make one of mine Premium, I want as many people as possible to find mine!!

Money grab? Really? If Groundspeak doesn't make enough to meet expenses, you won't have your *free* outdoor activity.

  5. What about gnats? We went up to the mountains today and used bug spray but the gnats will went in my eyes, ears, I think I inadvertently ate about 100 of them.....

The gnats don't bite but they are ANNOYING as hell and it's quite disgusting to have them flying up her nose constantly.... help please? We tried Deet and this other stuff that smelled and acted just like Deet......

For gnats, you could try something like this ..

  6. I love it when someone writes a short story about their adventure. I don't find them annoying in any way and I will read the entire story. Photos are a big bonus as long as they aren't too revealing regarding the location of the cache. Keep up the good work.

  7. I found one inside of a rock. It was a small boulder, maybe around 50 to 70 lbs. The CO drilled out a hole in the bottom that was about 5 inches in diameter and maybe 6 inches deep. He then fashioned a snug fitting cover for it that looked remarkably like the boulder itself. He also made it a waypoint projection cache. If one just rolled the rock up to look underneath it, they'd easily miss the plug in the bottom of the rock.

  8. I cant seem to be able to download to the GPS. Ive installed the Garmin plug in ,it just keeps telling me to install the '

    Garmin Communicator plug in.

I'm curious ... are you working on a Mac? The Safari browser and Garmin communicator often times don't play nice together if you have the flip4mac plugin installed. My solution was to download the Camino web browser, but Firefox will work too, or you can just get rid of the plugin. Or, you can do what StarBrand suggested.

    happy caching!

  9. I never used a pole until last October when I purchased a Leki Sierra. It took a little while to get used to, but now I wouldn't hike without it. The feature I like the most is that upon unscrewing the wooden cap, I now have a monopod to use with my small digital camera. It has twist locks and they've never loosened up even under heavy use. It also has the anti shock feature that I like, and a foam grip. In the short time that I've had it, I've beaten it up and it still works great.

  10. Mine would lock and/or shut off too until I upgraded the firmware.

Thanks, but firmware is 3+. If I cant figure it out on my next voyage i'll send it back. It's not locking up. it just slowly fades to white then I have to restart.

    Thanks for the suggestions though!

Have you tried contacting Garmin? It may be something you can resolve over the phone.
