  1. The best thing for you to consider is the mapselect maps short term until you can afford the $69 for the Accuterra "Advanced Outdoor Content" topo map chips. Both rock big time as far as I'm concerned with the best Topos commercially available anywhere. They have a very good street map component that you'll find very useful. Let me know if I can be of further help to you. Be safe. N
  2. Also, don't use a geocache .GPX file (or pocket query) containing more than 500 geocaches. The GPS file management sytem doesn't like more than 500/per file. Congrats on the new toy! Be safe. N
  3. Absolutely! Get one of the Zagg screen protectors. The material used "heals" itself if scratched and will also fill scratches in the underlying surface. They're easy to apply and have a life time guarantee. Make sure when you're done installing it you use a hair dryer set on low to medium to warm the screen protector enough to fill the scratch and force out the minimal air bubbles. While you're warming the screen protector, GENTLY, with minimal pressure, knead the surface forcing out the bubbles and forcing the material into the scratch: you may have to do it twice for it to work completely. Be safe. N
  4. This is a common problem. First make sure you have the firmware to the latest version. This can be found on lowrances website. Second, place all your data on a microSD card which fits in the slot next to the usb plug. I returned my lowrance endura out & back promptly after the first week of using it. Had the information wipe on my twice in one day. Moved everything to a micro SD card and problem solved. After other issues with the device I moved to a Garmin Oregon 400t. It's more expensive but was well worth it. Hope this helps. Curious, I've had mine for some time now and have never heard of this problem. If you reported it to Lowrance, what was their response? Be safe. N

  6. Just my two cents. After 879 finds with Garmins and after attending several events, I noticed cachers using the DeLorme PN-40. I was able look at one that the cachers had and I bought one today. It's about the maps (maps, maps and maps). BTW, I would keep the 60CSx since that is the most reliable geocaching GPSr there is. Don't you dare get rid of that 60!!!! LOL. The 60 is far and away one of the very best, most reliable, and accurate units on the market (it's one of the units that the Special Forces guys here buy by the armload before leaving the states headed for the sandbox). At the very least consider keeping it as a back up or for use by other visiting family members, friends, etc. You'll never get for it what you paid for it or what it's worth. In all seriouness, you really should hold on to it. Enjoy your new toy in good health! Be safe. N
  7. You've chosen 2 excellent units to be stuck on! I have both the Vista HCX and the 76CSX and love them both (only difference with the 76 is it floats). They are remarkably accurate, virtually idiot proof to use, and take the GPSfiledepot.com third party maps which cost nothing. I carry the Vista in my possibles bag when I go outdoors but have no real game plan because of it's small size and light weight. Both are consistantly excellent in heavy cover and canyons with high walls. The 76, like the 60 also accepts an external antenna. Thought so much of the Vista I bought one for my oldest daughter who's also an avid outdoors person and geocacher. You won't lose with any of the 3, just flip three coins (one for each GPS) and take the odd coin and buy that Gps. Be safe. N
  8. If you wait for Lowrance to do a firmware update you'll probably have a long gray beard. When I got my iFinder Hunt I found a couple of firmware problems and I was told they were working on an update. Never happened. I also had a problem with their Mapcreate and Plextore DVD drives. They had me do a procedure and send them a file. They told me they would be working with Plextore and would get the problem fixed. Again, that never happened. I really like my iFinder, but their software people suck! Yup, Expert is on vacation and will be back on Monday. I would expect to see him on the forum on tuesday. Be safe. N
  9. I have both and my vote is definitely for the Out & Back without hesitation. The geocaching capabilities are the best in the industry bar none. Good luck and have fun! Be safe. N
  10. I'll bet your position format is wrong. I have a 76CSX which is virtually identical operationally to your 60CSX so bear with me. Go to Menu>Setup>Units>Map Datum and make sure your map datum is selected correctly (typically WGS 84 for most). If this is different than the reference map your caches are located on than the GPS will be off. Make sure the units in Distance/Speed (on that same page) are identified correctly. Make sure your North Reference is correct, and the "Switch to compass heading when below:" located in Menu>Setup>Heading, are "1mh for more than 5 sec." is selected. Make sure your batteries are fresh and your GPS is calibrated for compass and altimeter. Make sure you're not close to power lines or electrical equipment (transformers, appliances, etc.) which generate magnetic fields that could be affecting your GPS compass heading. Hope this helps you. If not PM me and we'll find a way to communicate to work it out for you by telephone. Be safe. N
  11. Or, rather than invest in a new card, could I temporarily move the duplicate topo files out of the "Rastermaps" file and paste them in another part of the card? Update - It worked. I used my old Dell Axim to cut and paste the topo map file from the "Rastermaps" directory to the root of the microSD. Once the card was replaced in the Out and Back the aerial map of the region in question was displayed. Finally, I cut and pasted the topo map back into the directory and all is well. Excellent feedback! Hmmm. Wonder if you could use an additional folder in the "RasterMaps" folder for the odd map files that you don't want to see to maintain some sort of file management rather than going back out to the root directory. Thanks Indy, appreciate the update! N
  12. Hey Rich, I am not sure what is going on but I want to see if we can get this resolved. It sounds like you are doing everything correctly but it is not working. Are you just trying to download satellite images or are your downloading both topo and satellite for the same area? If you are downloading both types the unit will only show the first images it finds, which would be the topo images. If you want to send me your phone number and a time to contact you via a PM, I will get this worked out for you. I downloaded some sat images today and they won't display on my Out and Back. Since reading this thread by EnduraExpert I think I know why. I already have topo images for the same area. Am I correct in presuming I will need to load the sat images on a separate card? Thats correct. Redundant areas won't be viewable and will need to be dumped to a different card. N Or, rather than invest in a new card, could I temporarily move the duplicate topo files out of the "Rastermaps" file and paste them in another part of the card? I would think so. Perhaps a "Misc. Imagery" folder heading. lol. Definitely wouldn't hurt to try. Let us know how you make out. Be safe. N
  13. Unfortunately, not true. Both my Oregon 200 and my Colorado 400i are devoid of street names regardless of profile. Be safe. N

  15. The Colorado rocks in my book. It's been one of my "go to "gps's for some time now. You'd be hard pressed to find a GPS with the feature set the Colorado has at the prices advertised for it. The best prices I've seen have been at Rocketcamera.com and CascadeGPS.com around $239. Go for it. N
  16. Easiest is GPSbabelGUI, the version with a user interface if you're not comfortable with having to write the conversion command lines. http://www.gpsbabel.org/download.html, Download the Windows version GPSbabel-1.3.6.zip and run the GPSBabelGUI.exe hands down the very best bar none! Be safe. N
  17. This may also happen if your settings for your pocket queries are set for the 1.01 convention instead of the 1.0. Go to your profile page and chage that setting and I'll bet you see it go away. N
  18. Don't waste anymore time on it, worse yet, don't let your wife have to deal with the headache. The answer is obvious. N
  19. You may have seen the thread but someone has mentioned a certain 62CSX that sounds promising. If it's anything like it's predecessor it should be a great hiking GPS. However it is pure speculation at this point. 62CSX Anyway, addressing the topic. The whole Colorado experience for me was wierd. I was an early adopter and was very disappointed with the unit for about a year. Out came the Oregons while the Colorado was still sub-par and I traded up with Garmin and never looked back. The Colorado was great as far as achieving and holding a lock with the helix antenna, much better than the Oregon. Maybe this will provide a chance to pick one up cheap as retailers dump them completely. Sad as it sounds, that's exactly what got me into the Colorado's. The features are every bit as good, even with it's own idiosyncrasies. I really enjoy it and love the fact it still accepts the external antenna's which is a "dying" feature with Garmin and others. Compared with the original MSRP (website) $699, I felt like I stole my 400I for $239. Hop on that horse asap if you want full featured because the Colorado's got'em and may not last for long at this pace. Be safe. N
  20. You'll love the 400c but will no doubt need to add additional charts for those not included with the 400c (check the included charts from Garmin). Garmin and Navionics has some of the most comprehensive assortment of charts available. Another great choice is the Colorado 400c which has the same basic features but no touchscreen and at a price point very near $250 if you do a product and price search on bizrate.com. You can do the same thing with the Navionics charts with the Lowrance Endura Safari and Sierra (better) and the Delorme PN-40. Get them in your hands and play with them, the names mean nothing to the average "joe" until they've had a chance to play with them. I have all three and enjoy them all, I use the Lowrance Sierra or the Delorme for the Navionics chips which I prefer. Just remember, the charts may not be quite as comprehensive on the handhelds as they might be with the same chip on a dedicated chart or sonar unit. Try before you buy if you can. Geocaching is again a matter of choice and preference. All three are really great for paperless use but I find the Lowrance unit to excel specifically in this area over the others because of the filtering capabilities of the many different kinds of caches one can find. Look on their website for the particulars. The others are no slouches either by any means and again a matter of personal choice. Let me know if you need further help via pm. Best of luck with your search. Bea safe. N
  21. That's correct, they are supposed to be visible in the new Basecamp that's to be released at the same time ase Birdseye so map management and planning should be no different than with earlier editions of Basecamp, just addition of imagery. I'm really looking forward to this. Be safe. N
  22. Where do you find the "cheapy" ones? Some of the Cheapies come from places like BestBuy and the like ... some of the better ones I've used before the Zaggs are Bracketron and (Fellowes) WriteRight Screen Protectors which work quite well but they're very thick and easy to apply, but scratch easily. You get several in a pack for like $3-4 a pack. Be safe. N
