  1. I agree with your sentiments. I feel that prevalence must be accessed within context. For example a category of historical markers in a small state or province, where there are only let us say 300 markers, would be viable whereas a global category with that same number might not. Having said that, even on a global basis, the number of potential waymarks should be balanced against the overall interest and importance of the category. Again, hypothetically, a category of "Palaces" (which someone did suggest a while back). There would not be a large number of palaces in the world (none in Australia as far as I know), but the history and historical importance of many a palace would be sufficient to make them interesting enough to turn into a category. Having said this, I am inclined to err on the side of saying yes. If a group of experienced and interested waymarkers put together a proposal for X, I say let them have a go. It might work, or it might not, either way they and we will learn something. I will take note of one observation made by SQ "most of the categories of high prevalence have already been created." Yes and no. It is true that the obviously interesting category ideas have been tapped (though I am surprised from time to time when someone comes up with an attention getter), but in the non-Waymarking countries there are few localised categories. For example Post Offices and geo-markers. Categories exist for these in most western countries, but not elsewhere. There is scope for hundreds (thousands?) of such new categories to come into existence.
  2. I myself prefer the decimal degrees. I found that a new, blank waymark defaults to my previously selected format, so that if my last waymark was entered in decimal degrees, then my next would automatically open with the decimal option selected. I am using Safari on a Mac. Is this not the same for you?
  3. I see on these fora a considerable variety of good ideas, thoughts, and suggestions on various Waymarking topics (also lots of gossip, but lets ignore that). As it is now, these questions and answers are dealt with and then they slowly march downwards until they slip off the screen into the older pages, never to be seen again. In order to keep this information current and available would it be possible to construct a "FAQ"—a list of frequently asked questions, and their answers, compiled from these discussions? This would provide a permanent and easily accessible list of wisdom so that anyone desirous of assistance can browse through the faq, rather than ask and re-ask the same question over again. I am not sure just what the best way to store a FAQ would be, but I am sure that something can be figured out. Good idea?
  4. Interesting sights, beautiful environment. I should revisit Euro as a waymarker (last time 2006), and expand my stats. Though of course, stats and scores, and who has the most, are not important.
  5. I had a look at "non-specific" (sounded a little auto-biographical). The e.g. given of "Soviet soldiers... " would not fit into this category, as fi67 said, as that is a specific war. Yes, indeed, there seems to be a gap in the waymark coverage of the world. I catch all category for wars/conflicts without a specific category would, I think, be viable.
  6. I had a look at the categories, and could find nothing. A suggestion would be to place it in the "uncategorized waymark" list. Perhaps someone else has a better idea?
  7. Just to throw in my 2c worth, I have come across several cloisters in south east Asia, principally Thailand. Also a few in the Commonwealth of Australia. Thus they are globally available.
  8. @Nitro, you are welcome. Fun place. Relaxing.

  10. Let see if we can fire this one up. Let it take flight.
  11. Just got the word from the wm geeks, my profile has gone to digital (I hope) heaven, never to return. Sad. I will now have to reconstruct my wm profile from the ground up. My deep, personal thoughts on the important issues (shaken or stirred?), great historical figures (Hugh Hefner), and—the meaning of life. Advisory to everyone else, make a backup of your profile jic. * Let me add that I was gifted a three month membership extension by the big bosses of Waymarking as recompense for this tragic loss. Thanks muchly.
  12. The best city in the world, number 1. http://www.pattaya.net/do/nightlife.html
  13. Anything happening? Things seem to be draggin.
  14. Q: Nazca lines, they were *believed* to form part of an ancient pilgrimage or ritual act. Would they be a good example of an ancient pilgrimage or would more proof be needed? A. "*believed*" is not sufficient. A reasonable, and I am a reasonable man, amount of evidence would be required before accepting an ancient, or for that matter, a contemporary pilgrimage.
  15. To be frank, are cows interesting? Generally speaking, is bovine sculpture well crafted? "Udderly Art". Ummmm.
  16. Yes, the basic stuff is there, but I HAD ~1000 words of text in my profile. My personal philosophy of Waymarking, intimate thoughts, my achievements, my history, milestones, important other stuff I have forgotten about—ALL GONE ! (. I am hoping that it can be recovered.
  17. Not sure which category it should go into, but the photo sure demonstrates the perils of smoking !
  18. Ditto, hope you have fun. Have you started yet? You might want to work with a good and healthy category, "vegetarian eateries" just for example.
  19. Turkeys are better than eagles: Franklin's Letter to His Daughter (excerpt) "For my own part I wish the Bald Eagle had not been chosen the Representative of our Country. He is a Bird of bad moral Character. He does not get his Living honestly. You may have seen him perched on some dead Tree near the River, where, too lazy to fish for himself, he watches the Labour of the Fishing Hawk; and when that diligent Bird has at length taken a Fish, and is bearing it to his Nest for the Support of his Mate and young Ones, the Bald Eagle pursues him and takes it from him. "With all this Injustice, he is never in good Case but like those among Men who live by Sharping & Robbing he is generally poor and often very lousy. Besides he is a rank Coward: The little King Bird not bigger than a Sparrow attacks him boldly and drives him out of the District. He is therefore by no means a proper Emblem for the brave and honest Cincinnati of America who have driven all the King birds from our Country... "I am on this account not displeased that the Figure is not known as a Bald Eagle, but looks more like a Turkey. For the Truth the Turkey is in Comparison a much more respectable Bird, and withal a true original Native of America... He is besides, though a little vain & silly, a Bird of Courage, and would not hesitate to attack a Grenadier of the British Guards who should presume to invade his Farm Yard with a red Coat on."
  20. Lumbricus. They call him Lumbricus.
  21. These puppies are everywhere. I say be d_mmed (sorry for the strong language) with "Figurate Public Sculpture". These noble creatures deserve their own category. So say we all !
  22. GT. I could do that, but the danger always exists that by going back to correct the past I could accidentally (or maybe my sis-in-laws could) erase myself from the timescape at any mome
  23. I just knew that someone was going to say something sensible. Can't have any fun.
