  1. If a cache has been moved such that I could legitimately find it again without already knowing where it was, then I'd have no problem logging another find on it, since I don't care about what number it is. At all. I honestly don't understand why anyone would have a problem with this. For someone who wouldn't log another find, if the cache owner moved the cache 200 feet, used the same container, same log book, but archived the original listing and started a new one, would that make you feel okay to log a second find? Even though the only thing that changed between the two scenarios is the number? Why would you feel that way?

  2. OMG, you guys, I'm afraid of a website!

That's very immature. Please refrain from posting things like this while people discuss!

It's no more or less ridiculous than the premise behind this topic. If you didn't take yourself so seriously maybe you could have seen that.

  3. When I was a kid, I would have thought that a spent shell was the absolute coolest thing ever.

Also, I make pens out of spent rifle brass, so I'm glad to find those whenever I can.

    One person's trash...

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. People, and not just little kids, collect all sorts of things. If it's that upsetting just trade it out.

  4. Hi, I'm new to geocaching and I would like to know how best to exploit all of you for my own financial gain! Any hints?

    Disgusting.

It reads like a stereotypical marketer. "I know it's not allowed, but I'm special and new and unique and this is a perfect fit for my business unlike all those other schlubs so please tell me how I can do it."

He specifically asked for other sites or software to list his cache. Just because it's not allowed here doesn't mean it's off limits on the whole internet.

  5. The log book is in there for a reason: to prove you found the cache.

Welcome to Control Freak 101.

Logbooks, originally, were devices for folks to share their experiences, not something to be used as proof. This whole game is fundamentally based upon the goodwill of others. Starting your game play on the assumption that everyone else is a liar, and must therefor provide proof is a recipe for failure.

But if being a control freak is your thing, by all means, have at it.

The rest of us will giggle at you behind our hands.

Yeah, no doubt. After reading these threads and seeing how much this seems to bother some people, I think from now on I'm just not signing anything physical and logging everything online with just a note. I figure that ought to hack off the purists on both sides. Everybody loses, and I win.

  6. I've posted found it logs to my own caches. I've posted DNF logs to my own caches. I've even posted notes to my own caches with the word 'test' in them.

    See where this is going?

Your own caches are a great place to test mobile device software after having problems to check whether everything is working. Different logging methods, fieldnotes, internet connections etc etc.

Posting such test logs to someone else's cache might be considered rude, but on your own no one can complain.

Of course I do go back and delete the logs when the testing is complete.

Maybe this person just hasn't got round to, or has forgotten to, go back and delete the test logs.

Looks like they were testing logging from their (perhaps new) phone on their own cache judging by the wording of the logs.

Don't know the reason for the OP posting a find on his own cache though.

    Apparently they can...

  7. From the latest log entry :"Gps led me to a certain area, but DNF anything except trash. This would be a beautiful and wonderful historical street if people from the area would clean it up and maintain it..." Sounds like a trashy vacant area that could use a good weeding. I don't see how pulling weeds would be disrespectful, but if gardening hurts your feelings then I guess it's time to archive.

  8. If you don't like them ... Don't go out and find them....... pretty simple to me

If you read his post he said 2 of the nearest 50 were not micros. If that is the general ratio in his area it doesn't leave much geocaching for him to do.

Yeah, I just wanted to say that I thought it was pretty funny that some people were bagging on him saying he should only look for the caches he likes, while other people were bagging on him for only having three finds  I love you guys :(

  9. I'm the OP so here is what I did. I found three caches that were involved in a controlled fire. A controlled fire is when the people responsible for the property decide that the undergrowth is too thick, so they intentionally set it ablaze.

The first cache was an ammo box. The lid gasket, and everything inside made of plastic was melted. The log book was OK since it wasn't in a baggie so I signed it. I closed the lid and hung it from a branch so it would be off the ground. I took a picture of it and posted it when I logged it in as a "Needs Maintenance". I thought it was a sight to see acres of blackened ash and a black box sitting there trying to hide.

The second cache was a homemade "Mushroom". It was right where it was supposed to be, but all that was left of the toadstool was the top cap. The PVC stem, and the logbook, was melted into a gooey mass. I took a picture of it and left it as it was.

The third cache was a cammo'd plastic jar. It again was right where it was supposed to be. All that was left was a handfull of marbles and a gooey mass. I took a picture and left it as it was.

I dragged my butt through a couple of acres of burnt out forrest to find these and by golly I want my smilies for my efforts. So I logged them as found, and I have pictures to prove it.

Yeah, I'd have logged those as found. If I've located the cache, took a photo of the cache, and am holding it in my hands, then I obviously have found it. I'm not responsible for the condition it's in because that's not my doing. If the CO wanted to hassle me about logging a find in that case, then I'd just know who's caches to ignore from now on, that's all.

  10. I've been doing this for less than a year, and I don't have many finds, but I've never left anything more than a name/date in any physical logbook. I didn't think any more than that was ever expected, and I never really noticed anyone else leaving more than that in the logbook either. However, I always try to at least leave a couple sentences in the online log. If it's in the woods or something I try to mention any interesting plants or animals I saw in the area because I'm interested in those things and those are the kinds of log entries I like to read.

But no, my logging habits haven't changed.

  11. I kind of doubt that a cacher did this, or even that the technique would really be that useful. As has been pointed out already, it would take days for the grass to die after being sprayed. But besides that, even though the grass would be dead, it would still be there where it was, and would still obscure the hide just as effectively even though it's now brown. It would take a very long time (In geocaching terms) for the dead grass to physically deteriorate to the point where something under it on the ground would be clearly visible. My vote is on dogs. After you placed the cache, either a stray dog just happened by and sniffed it out, or else someone went caching with their dog, and it marked the area. Then other dogs smelled that and remarked the area themselves. Sometimes stray cats will try to overmark a dog's mark. Before you know it several pints of urine have been sprayed all over your cache (Which is really gross.) and the grass started to die in a very local area. It makes more sens that someone spraying roundup to try to find the cache.

  12. I'm going to go against the grain and speak my mind. First off, I'm new to the hobby, so take my opinion however you want.

The way I see it, if I locate a cache, and am holding it in my hand, and sign the box it's in, obviously I have found the cache. Signing the box instead of a piece of paper in the box doesn't change the fact that I found it. Would I log that as a find? Probably not, because I don't really care about the smiley or the gold star or internet points or whatever carrot I'm supposed to be chasing. But I absolutely would not feel like I was cheating or somehow pulled a fast one on somebody if I did log a find. The find is mine, and mine to log how I want.

That said, the listing on this website is yours, and you'd be well within your rights to remove someone's log from your listing for whatever reason you wanted, because it's your listing, just like it's my find.

However, as Bittsen said, what is the damage? Did the finder so bruise your ego by not playing your little games that you feel it's your duty to take away their little smiley face? Really?

In the end, you made a mistake by listing the cache incorrectly, and the finder made a mistake by signing the wrong thing, but you want to hold it over them?
