My son-in-law just got back from a year in Iraq, and is now working in the armory at Fort Hood (Tx). I guess I need to ask him if any ammo boxes made it back to the states.

Stunod, please elaborate. When I saw the McColloch, I wasn't sure if you used it to bushwach, or to fix the usual problems with PCs and other high tech equip. Lowracer, you are clearly a big dog, with your Garmin 60CS and 10GB Ipod. I use the same set-up as CarleenP , but my Garmin is older and my Palm is newer. I highly recommend Cachmate and GSAK.

Don't you think the polite thing to do would be to let globalgirl in on your joke? As similar threads will tell you, it will help you identify the 3 or 4% of cachers that browse the forums regularly, but other people may not get it.

Ok, maybe this is a little out there, and is only available in Chicago right now, but maybe Markwell or some other Illinois cacher with some money to spend might want to look into this idea for a cache container. Funny how this recrational activity/sport/hobby warps you view of the world when you hear a news item. Edit: I guess the "no burying" rule might be a problem.

As a fellow Jeep owner, I'll tell you that Jeep Wranglers (like the last three pictured) have a "snorkle" on their air intake so that they draw air from very close to the top of the hood. I'm assuming that the Cherokee in the lead has the same feature. There are optional accessories that let you raise it even higher. Water can enter from the exhaust pipe and ruin the engine if you stall out. Probably, but it washes out and Jeeps have drain plugs in the floors. There's the rub. I'm betting someone went over this trail on foot or with a depth pole to check it first (or they are very familiar with the trail when dry). I think the post says that they were coming back, but someone must have tested it or knew it going in.

I heartily recommend Markwell's FAQs for this and lots of other good info. He discusses this topic here. The short answer is to multiply your decimal minutes by 60 to get seconds. In your example, 51'26'978 is 51° 26.978 minutes. Multiply .978 x 60 = 58.68 (or rounded, 59) seconds, so 51.26.978 is the same as 51° 26:59. Similarly, 5'26'432 converts to 5° 26:26. At night I face Polaris, which gets me within a degree of true (not magnetic) north. But then again, what do you expect from someone used to being in orbit. --Sput

I once sat next to a guy on a plane who had a GSPr attached to his Palm. He had the window seat but couldn't get a lock. This was a few years ago, and hardly a fair test of the GPSr, but from what I read in the Forums, others have used stand-alone GPSr on planes near the window and have gotten a good signal. Fry's in Houston had yellow Etrex on sale this weekend for $69.99. Pretty hard to beat that price.

I assume basic demographic info (age, location, income, education, gender, etc.) will be included. It would be very helpful for potential sponsors (like Jeep, Rodale, Magellan, and others) to know who they are reaching. Questions like "how would you rate the quality of cache in your area" needs to be tied to the responder's location (ZIP or something) so you could see if there is some consistency in the replies you get. How about "On a scale of 1 to 10, rate you cache reviewer" with the same ability to tie it to the responder's location.

If any scouts find a cache, give them the web address, have 'em join and log their finds. Always nice to get new enthusiasts.

Maybe you missed the subheader of this thread Sorry, Sax. Here's the scoop. I was born in late 1957. My mom and dad were having trouble agreeing on a name for me. She wanted "Michael" he wanted "Mickey." She said, "You can't name someone 'Mickey,' that's a nickname. My dad asked the nurse for her input. She said "You can call him 'Sputnik' if you want to." Sputnik, just launched, was in all the papers at the time. For a while there, it was a close call, Mickey or Sputnik. Sputnik BTW, I also play the sax (and a little guitar and piano). Maybe we can jam sometime.

WAY too much information!

The easiest way to do this is to use cache management software such as GSAK, which will allow you to list all caches within x miles of a route and download the to your GPSr, Palm or whatever. You should be able to get more infor here. Try searching this 5 page topic (using Ctrl F from the top of each page) for "route", or post to that topic and Clyde will help. Happy hunting!
