  1. "The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers"
  2. Pant, I really appreciate the tact and decorum that you have exhibited. I apologize for putting words in your mouth regarding the intention of the OP. I think it is certainly appropriate to ask about the plans of TPTB regarding the site. If I were in charge, I would probably be reluctant to get too specific about the future, because I wouldn't want to disappoint people if things turned out differently than I expected. If you think about it, cache seekers are like any other web browsers, and can find info where ever their search engines may take them. Cache hiders, on the other hand, have invested time and effort, counting on TPTB to provide info in a helpful (and that means free) manner. Before I go to the time and expense of placing a cache (and for the record, I'm one of the leaches that doesn't have a hide yet), I think it is fair to ask whether, by following the guidelines and posting my cache page here, I will get suitable exposure to cache seekers.
  3. Cool! I had no idea that you could look at these. The new maps have lots more functionality, but these give a different POV. I like it. (Of course, I just edited the URL to insert TX instead of MA). OT, non-members benefit a lot from new features that are free to them, as a result of the support of members. Geocaching isn't an entitlement. You are not entitled to any free functionality, nor am I. TPTB maintain this site at their pleasure. I'm grateful for it. The geocaching community empowers TPTB by frequenting the site. If the community doesn't like it, they will find alternative ways to engage in the RASH. The OP was, in my opinion, asking for a promise from Jeremy, but even that promise isn't enforceable. Relax and enjoy!
  4. A recent "Mythbusters" episode on TV debunked this myth. They filled a small Lexan room with gas vapor and tried to get it to explode with a cell phone. No luck. They then rigged it with a tiny exposed static electricity spark (not generated with a cell phone), and boom! According to a representative from some gasoline safety council they interviewed, there is NO documented case of a cell phone (or a GPSr) causing a fire or explosion, but the myth persists. According to the expert, there are occasional fires while filling your tank, almost always caused by the person re-entering the car while the tank is filling, sliding their polyester slacks across the seat, then getting back out and grabbing the nozzle or touching the car near the nozzle. The static electricity they generate sets off a spark that ignites the gas. The vapor burns off quickly and the flame dies out UNLESS the person panics (wouldn't you?), and pulls the still-flowing nozzle from the car. Then the gas gushing from the nozzle ignites and a disaster results. Moral: While reading the gas station's GPS coordinates to your buddy on your cell phone, don't get back into the car. If you do, touch some part of the metal car frame far from the gas cap before returning to the nozzle. Failing even that, step away from the pump and hit the emergency shut off.
  5. Here is a recent study comparing accuracy by averaging. One test compares two GPSrs over 2 one week periods. Interesting graphs, including the plot of a 30 day test of a Garmin eMap that shows a cluster of results, most falling within a 1 meter circle, centered about 1.5 meters NE of the "true" position. Edit: Trying (without much success) to make more intelligible
  6. At a local caching event, one of the hosts wore a bar-b-que apron with a geocaching logo and the word GUILT written on it. Of course I had to ask him what it meant. He told me, "Grown Up Idiots Looking for Tupperware." Not my "manifesto," but an interesting perspective.
  7. Here is a study comparing 4 external antenna types. Not an exact answer to your question, but interesting.
  8. I can't compare and contrast, but I have City Select on my 60C. Easy to use. I was caching in a pretty new residential area a few weeks ago, and was amazed that I was getting turn-by-turn directions on streets on which the concrete was hardly dry.
  9. For routing by car and caching, I love the Garmin 60c. It you drive by your turn, the display say "rerouting" for a few seconds, and then tells how to get back on course. I have City Select Maps loaded for urban driving. It is on the pricy side, but well worth the money, IMHO.
  10. GPS Now for $289.95 CompuPlus for $271.00 But check tax and shipping charges. YMMV
  11. Maybe you could do both an actual and a virtual as sort of a multi. Hide the coords for the "most incredible location I know of" in the actual cache, so when they find it, it directs them to a scenic wonder. I would love a cache like that. The cache page can just say, "as a special reward, see coordinates in the cache" or something suitably obscure. Or do separate caches, one actual and one virtual, so people who were "numbers" people would get to bag two finds for their effort (so long as they are .1 miles apart). I wouldn't worry about how remote the cache is. You won't have your e-mail clogged up with lots of finds, but I bet the logs you get will be worth it. You may need to convince your approver that you can maintain this cache, but that is the only concern I can think of. That and Dukie marking the cache . . . eeww.
  12. More likely that your car odometer is slightly off. 7 miles out of 1200 is pretty darn close.
  13. How do you get those screen shots? Too cool!
  14. Jeremy, I feel for you, guy. You just can't please everbody. Thanks for all your work, and for your willingness to solicit input, however fractious the response. I trust you will give this debate all the consideration it deserves and act accordingly. (Maybe you already have).
  15. It looks like two bugs and a pin for 11.75. Maybe the seller is making it up on volume (or bought some bugs, and has now left the sport). They couldn't be too sharp or they wouldn't have posted the photo with the TB number visible.
  16. I was looking at the Microsoft Windows logo the other day thinking, "Hmmm, if you rotated it along its Northeast to Southwest diagonal axis, that would look just like . . . "
  17. Phishy At the top to this thread, click on "Track this topic." The site will send you an e-mail whenever someone posts to this thread. Sorry about your stamp. I hope you find it.
  18. Pot smoking leads to low ambition and indecision. As your system clears up, you'll be able to decide about your GPSr, and have the energy to go find some caches! Good luuck.
  19. Older units (before the GPS system was released to civilians) often were limited to 2 decimals. .001 is about 6 feet (or less in latitude as you move north), so .001 should get you within 60 feet (plus or minus 20 feet or so in GPSr accuracy).
  20. This thread has some great links. I especially like JoeFrog's pdf file!
  21. I got my 60c from CompuPlus and was very happy with their price and service. I got my maps from GPS Now and was very pleased with them as well.
  22. Not sure about this, but try going to MapSource, select no maps, and D/L them to your GPSr. I know that the GPSr replaces maps with the latest download, and then uses the base map to fill in the blanks. If you download the nul set, it should default to the base map. Alternatively select a map in Nowheresville, NE to download. You get the base map for your area. Out of curiousity, why are you trying to do this?
  23. Doppler Shift!!! Who'd a thunk it? It's not just for Edwin Hubble anymore! Great info, EraSeek. Thanks! Do you have a link to that info? I'd love to learn more.
