  1. Don't do it, man. It's a bad trip. A road to nowhere. Move away from the light. Move away from the light! Me? I can quit any time I want to. I just don't want to. And I missed the Wednesday 12 step meeting.
  2. Anything less than 20 ft on your accuracy is pretty good. 14 ft is excellent. .001 minutes is about 6 feet, so you could never expect better than that. Prairie Dog's advice is dead on. When you get close, stop looking at the GPRs and start thinking "Where would I hide a cache?" If you are clearly in no-man's land, make sure that you entered the coordinates accurately, and that you have the GPS Datum set to WGS 84 .
  3. Thot, I just ran my "find new" PQ (I haven't in several days) and your cache showed up. Twenty-two miles from my house, so I may not get to it right away, but it's there. 5 finds already, with FTF on the 18th. No idea why it isn't showing up for you. I'm betting some gremlin setting on your PQ page. Thanks for the cache. I hope to get to it soon!
  4. Welcome to the addiction! You may want to take a look at Markwell's FAQs. He has an easy-to-use discussion of this topic, ideal for new cachers.
  5. Markwell has some great information on waypoint averaging on his web site. In fact, there is a lot of good info about geocaching in general there. I highly recommend it.
  6. For man-made objects, I believe one of the Voyager spacecraft has that distinction, and it is unlikely that a TB will catch up (unless placed on a faster spacecraft). But it is a good idea. Maybe "most caches" should be a category by itself.
  7. I see no reason for hopelessness or despair. Some might view portions of this conversation as very relevant discussion about the future of geocaching (with a lowercase "g"). Edit: Typo I think Jeremy's point is about the power of capitalism. To him that takes the risk and does the work goes the spoils. You don't "owe" society at large. John Galt talked other major capitalists into picking up their toys and going home (or going to a valley in Colorado) and society just fell apart. Or as Paul Simon would have it,
  8. Please forgive an ignorant southern boy, but what is RIT?
  9. Elias, I just wanted to say thanks for all of the personal attention you give to PQ issues on this forum. I'm a premium member on my team account, and take great comfort in the fact that you are on the lookout for problems, and so pro-active in heading them off for us. Thanks again
  10. I've read <1000 mph (i.e., up to 999 mph) and <60,000 feet, but can't remember the source. Seemed authoritative at the time. Edit: typo
  11. To get from Geocaching.com to your Palm, you need two pieces of software. One on your laptop to read the GPX file that Geocaching.com e-mails to you (sinceyou are a premium member) and convert it into a Palm-readable file. A second piece of software on the Palm lets you read the file your laptop created when you sync it to the Palm. For me, I use GSAK on my computer, and Cachemateon my PDA. It's a great combination. Others swear by GPX Spinner and Plucker. There is a lot of good info out there on "paperless" caching. This site discusses the GPX Spinner/plucker combination. You may want to search this forum for "paperless" for more info.
  12. For me, finding the cache is always a real bear . My bearing takes me to the cache. If someone asks me where I'm heading , I'm heading on my heading. Kinda dumb, but it helps me keep them straight.
  13. Texas Geocaching Assn (Rusty, please don't tell me they stopped supporting this link!) Edit: The remark to Rusty is an off topic joke. He just corrected another post of mine where I misdirected someone to lostoutdoors.com
  14. Oops! Hadn't noticed that. Sorry for the bum steer. Thanks for the correction, rusty.
  15. Geno, No shut down problems with my 60C. I can't speak for CS owners. There is a setting on the C telling it what to do if it loses external power. The default is set to turn unit off. You can change it to stay on. I seem to remember the question you are referring to, that the GPSr just shut sown randomly. If the user who asked the question only had the problem when it was plugged into a cigarette lighter or something, I would blame a loose connection and a "Shut Down" setting. Hopefully, some CS owners will chime in here.
  16. Good thought, Houkou, I am using 3.50. And that's what I get for reading the manual. The GPSr now has two more listings not shown in the manual. "Hide City Select North A" and "Hide US Topo"!!! I didn't see them there until your post mentioning "map families". If you hit "Hide City Select North A," the Topo maps show up. That menu selection then changes to "Show City Select North A" I'm still puzzled by the fact that when you tell it to show Topo and show City Select, it only displays the latter on the map. Maybe it gets too cluttered to show them both. But if only one is going to be shown, I would have thought that when you first hit Menu on the Map page, the Map Setup listing would show the map that is actually being displayed, instead of (i) listing as the only map, one that isn't being displayed, and (ii) having to go to a further submenu by guessing to press "Menu" again from that page to get the to the list of the real map. Oh well. Still love this GPSr.
  17. I recently participated in a thread started by Pantalaimon that got heated pretty quickly. Pantalaimon did a great job of keeping the discussion civil, and did his best to defuse the hostility. He did a great job, but you can't get everyone to play nice. Some people confuse shedding heat with shedding light. I nominated Robespierre to be a mod in a thread several weeks ago, based upon his well reasoned posts and calming influence. Thanks, Robes.
  18. As for being cautious around plastic, be mindful of (i) your watch crystal and (ii) the face plate on your GPSr (and PDA). High concentrations of DEET can do real damage. Take off your watch and apply while far from your electronics. Technically, they advise that you not spray DEET on your face (or on your children's faces). You are supposed to spray it on your hands and then rub it onto faces. They also recommend that you apply it to your children's faces, don't put it onto their hands (which too often end up in their mouths, eyes, etc), unless you make them wash hands afterward. Like any other pesticide, read and follow the directions!
  19. I don't know about the OP, but it took me two tries to do this from GSAK. The first time I hit "export," I picked MapSend WPT file ("Yeah, Mapsend. That sounds right.") Then in MapSource, it let me list WPT files for import, but nothing happened. So then I went back and looked more closely. File-->Export-->MapSource MPS file. Imported that one, and it worked fine. As a wise man once said, "Dhot!" If you don't have USB support, but have the serial cable, you can download from MapSource to the 60C with GSAK->MapSourse->GPSr. If you are a registered GSAK user, and have downloaded the latest version of GSAK, you can go straight from GSAK to GPSr using the USB cable that comes with the 60C.
  20. I've been trying to fugure out how Map Information Setup settings work on my 60C The manual offers this helpful information It then lists "Show All," "Show None," "Hide Basemap" Restore Defaults," and "Restore All Map Defaults." I uploaded 50 nearby caches from GSAK to MapSource, then D/L'd City Select and Topo maps for my local area, as well as caches to the GPSr. I pressed Find Geocaches, Goto, and then selected Follow Road (I have my Route Settings set to "Prompted") to get my GPS to plan and auto route to the cache. The GPSr autorouted me through my neighborhood to the state park 70 miles away to where the cache is hidden. (It then routed a straight line from the end of the park road to the cache). I was SO IMPRESSED. I wanted to make sure that I could see the Topo map when I got near the cache, so I went to Map Information to see what map was being used. It listed only the appropriate Topo map, and had a checkmark next to it. No other maps were listed. But when I zoomed in on the state park, the Map shows a local street name, but no contour lines or other Topo features. (The street name isn't on the Topo map.) I couldn't figure out how it could have gotten me turn-by-turn routing only using the Topo map 70 miles away that doesn't even include my neighborhood (local area streets are not included in the base map). So I stroll over to Map Setup, and find the Information page. I click on Show All. Now the Map page lists 8 maps (4 city and 4 topos) that I D/L'd, all with check marks next to them. I re-zoom, and the map still displays the City Select map (only). No Topo info. I switch to Off Road, thinking that I am getting the city maps since I used it for auto routing, but it still shows the city map. (Remember, when I hit the map setting menu origianally, the only map listed is the local Topo) So what is the deal? Obviously, the GPSr used at least 2 city maps to get me from my house to the state park. It listed only the Topo map when I went in to list maps, but it was showing only the city map. The Topo information is not overlayed on the City Select info. To use the appropriate Topo map, I had to go to Map Setup, Information, and change the default setting to "show all." Then I had to go in and uncheck the city select maps in the area. Then it FINALLY let me see the Topo map. For a unit that specializes in Geocaching, this seems like an pretty counterintuitive way to get there. I'm glad that I was doing all of this on my couch, and not out in the sweltering skeeter-infested woods (I know its September, but this is Houston, high today 95, heat index 101). Okay, I'm done ranting now. Sorry. Does anyone have a way to show the Topo maps for a cache without going through 18 steps? What am I missing?
  21. Reasonable minds can (and do) differ on bottled water. There are several threads about it, including this recent one.
  22. I started with a Garmin 12 that I got for free years ago as a "thank you" for buying a laser printer. I recently got a 60c. Having noticed an improvement in technology, I am now thinking about giving up my victrola for a cd player, and maybe trading in my IBM selectric for one of those personal computer thingies.
