  1. Just for the record, I thought your idea was great. If you decide to do it, it's fine to have ALRs as long as they are not required to log the cache. You can update the cache pages and suggest they also do the challenge and the other cache, and if they do all three to PM you for coords to get a special prize. Make it clear that none of that is required to log either of the caches, but rather a bonus because, well, you're awesome. It would also be a good idea to shoot a note to the reviewer who published your caches and let them know why you're updating the cache page.
  2. Enjoyed the latest video. I'm not sure if it was intentional or not, but with the lack of swears in this video I shared it with my daughters. My 7 year old exclaimed "he's funny!" to which my 9 year old replied, "and cute too!". So you are once again banned from my house. And stay away from my daughters. Jerk. Seriously though keep going with the videos. They are quite entertaining. My daughters look forward to seeing your next video too. Jerk.
  3. I'm just curious about what was the most interesting geocache that you've done in your caching career. Either a unique/fun cache container or retrieval, or the physical location was interesting and unique in some way other than a great view. The most interesting cache that I've done is we went for a FTF on a (then) recently published cache. The coords on the cache page were for the center of a lake, since the cache was on an island. The catch was that the island floats around the lake, depending on which way the wind blows. It turns out the island is man-made and has been in the lake for a long time, as there is vegitation all over it, including 30' trees growing on it. On parts of the island you can see through to the water below. Since the cache is now archived due to inadequate permission, here's the GC number so you can check it out: GC311FC (Floating Island). It was only active for 3 1/2 months, so I'm really happy we had a chance to find it.
  4. Which leads me to another thought. If instead of deleting these Nigerian scam emails, everyone replied to them, the sheer volume of emails they would have to sort through would put them out of business quicker than any other method. Why aren't we encouraging every person who ever gets one of these emails to respond to them, multiple times even?
  5. The problem with the scammers is they're so flakey! I once thought it would be fun to get one of the fake checks in the mail so I started responding to their emails. I must have responded to a dozen different scammers. Many of them never replied again. I had back- and-forth exchanges with several of them, and a couple I even gave my address (PO box). Not one ever actually sent me a check. Seriously? Why are you sending all this spam if you're not going to pounce on a willing subject? As far as this email is concerned, you know that someone can only scam you if you go along with it, right? Even I it was a scam and they asked you to send them money, they don't actually get your money unless you send it to them. I would have replied out of sheer curiosity!
  6. Fair enough Mike. Your response (basically too bad, deal with it) is exactly what I would expect from a kid. It's probably the response I would have given when I was your age. As you get older your priorities really do change. While you're right, it's nothing my kids haven't heard before, it's still not something I am going to encourage. But I certainly won't be offended if you don't change your content for my younger audience. What you're doing is working; I did enjoy your first couple videos and look forward to your future ones. Are you going to try and release them on any kind of schedule or just whenever you get around to making the next one? Also, if I may ask, what editing software are you using? I really enjoyed your unique approach of talking to...you. Reminds me of an old nursery rhyme: Roses are red Violets are blue I'm schizophrenic And so am I
  7. Add me to the list that thought your videos were great. I was sad I couldn't share them with my 9 and 7 year old daughters who also love to geocache due to the swearing in them. As a family activity, you may consider modifying your vocabulary slightly so that all audiences can enjoy your videos. At any rate I'll be subscribing soon (when I can get to my desktop to do so) and hopefully I'll be able to share your humor with my daughters in the near future!
  8. Steppe-up, I'm pretty sure that people understood that your using a crowbar to search for the cache was a joke (at least I did anyway). There are, however, cachers out there that will take things apart looking for a cache. It's amazing (and sometimes detrimental to the sport) what lengths people will go through in order to have a "thorough" search. That being said, a "thorough" search is often necessary to find a cache. Not thorough in the sense of dismantling things that will get you in trouble, but thorough in the sense that you sometimes have to inspect EVERYTHING, and look in every single nook and cranny in order to find the cache. There's been caches that we've searched for for an hour before we found it, and when we found it we realized that we not only looked at it several times, but often touched it but just didn't recognize it as the cache. So to answer your question, higher difficulty caches can be VERY difficult to find. We keep a flashlight and mirror in our cache bag to make it easier to search under and in things. Hope this helps. Have a great time!
  9. I'd buy one just because you're 17 and trying to do something. I wish my 17 year old son would show some sort of ambition to earn a buck! PM me if you get going.
  10. I too wish the avatars didn't print when you print the logs. Oh wait... Maybe it's too bad I didn't take the time to read this thread before my post since it was stated several times that the avatars DON'T print when you print a log. I guess you won't be buying all that color ink after all. I personally like the avatars in the logs. I wish they showed up on my iPhone app!
  11. Really you only get 14 for that price (14 containers and 14 lids make a 28 piece set), but this is still a great deal. Thanks for the heads up. I bought two! Edit: I see you figured it out and fixed it only moments before I posted. Nice detective work!
  12. Reusable shopping bag as long as the cache is big enough and dry enough. That's all we use when we shop and they're nice to have. Deck of casino playing cards (used by the casino, but still have the "Official Casino Playing Cards" seal on them that the casino puts on before distributing to players. Obviously in a dry cache or in a small ziploc baggy that is just big enough for the cards.
  13. I usually just bring along a bag of candy for the kids. I call the kids right over and tell them I have to "show them something special". Then I pull out the cache and the bag of candy, they all cheer from delight. You sir, are a bad, bad man. Made me laugh though!
  14. Can you tell me what MPO and BM-Caches are? (I'd hate to assume what BM stood for) And for the list of Caches. What happens when there are over 10,000 caches in view? -Raine I'm pretty excited about being able to dip TB's when you edit logs. Mostly because I can't dip a TB at all when I log a find from my iPhone. Now if we could get that changed... I do appreciate all the work on the website!
  15. http://www.whatfunnyhat.com/Geocache-to-POI.htm IBCrashen you're my hero! I tried this method and it worked like a champ. Thanks for the help! GSAK looks like a pretty great program too. It's too bad Garmin doesn't make this feature accessible by default. I almost took back the GPSr when they told me over the phone that I could only load to the internal memory.
  16. I bought a Garmin Vista HCx yesterday and spent several hours trying to load a Pocket Query onto the 2GB microSD card that I put into it with no success. Today I called Garmin and was told that the MicroSD card is only for maps, all waypoints have to be loaded on the internal memory, which is limited to 1000 waypoints. 1000 geocaches only gets me a 15 mile radius from my house. I was obviously hoping to get farther. Does anyone know of any way to make the Vista HCx recognize waypoints from the memory card? I have used MapSource and it says it loads them on, but they don't show up. I have also just tried manually transferring the .gpx files into the [Drive]/garmin/GPX/ file. No success with either method. The Vista just shows "None Found" when I pull up Find Waypoints or Find Geocache. I tried another microSD card as well. I am able to load the PQ into the internal memory however. Any suggestions?
  17. How much to just sell it outright instead of through eBay?
  18. Thanks for the replies. As an addendum to this story, my wife's van was broken into while she was at work at Costco this morning. She found it when she got off work at 10 am. We got the window fixed at 1 pm. Then tonight about 6 pm tonight someone rear-ended her van when it was parked in front of our house. We've had it since it was new 5 years ago, and never had anything happen to it. Now two police reports on it in the same day. Some days just don't work out the way you planned...
  19. I had a couple travel bugs we picked up from caches recently that were in a small caching bag in the car. Unfortunately someone broke into my wife's van and stole that bag with the TBs inside of it. I posted a note on the TB pages that they were stolen, but now how do I get them out of my inventory? As a side note, I hope the thieves use our caching bag to discover how great caching is, and find some amazing new places with spectacular views. And then I hope they fall off a cliff enjoying those views.
  20. Thanks for the replies everyone. I also got a few e-mails from people willing to help. I went to Bellingham and was able to find a couple TB's there. I had no idea they carried them there! Thanks again to everyone. My girls are really excited to drop their new bugs in Mexico!
  21. Our family has been geocaching for awhile now. Our 5 and 7 year old daugters really enjoy it. We ordered two TB's that we were going to release in Cabo San Lucas when we are on vacation there and have them "race" home. Only problem is, it appears I ordered them too late as they aren't here yet and we leave Monday morning! I'm hoping someone fairly local has one or two that haven't been registered yet that we can buy. We live in the Burlington/Mt. Vernon area but can pick up anywhere from Bellingham to Lynnwood. Our girls are going to be sad if I can't come through on this one (although I'm sure they'll get over it while swimming in the pool all week). Can anyone be my hero? Paul paulgrenier at Netscape dot net Thanks!
