  1. Do you mean the container was 4 feet by 4 feet or that the container was a pickup truck? Either way that is pretty big. It was actually a 4Runner or something like that The cache page gave no clue that the cache was so big, other than the hint that wimseyguy repeated above. So far on this thread your the winner. You should have been able to fit at least 3 people in that one. So it was listed as size not chosen that is funny. Here someone probably looked for a micro. Hopefully you got to the log book without having to move too many rocks.
  2. Was that in our area? If so I'll have to keep an eye out for some listed as large.

  4. Oh wow! that thing is large enough to be buried in! It must have cost a pretty penny to put that together. My biggest surprise is that 7 yes 7 DNF were logged on it. I'm really considering beating that thing in size. Not sure I will do it yet. Something that large almost has to be on private land.
  5. Most Geocaches are micro to regular in size. I am planning to hide a five gallon bucket in the summer. That will be a large but certainly not the largest geocache ever. What is the largest one you ever saw? I'm wondering if any are large enough that a person can walk into it?
  6. Rainy weather is a good day to do your park and grabs and maybe your cemetery caches. Not so fun to go out in the woods. I have done it already but yes I do prefer to go when it is not raining. Caching in the dark can be interesting with the right people. I wouldn't do it alone. I tried doing it alone once but got too scared being in a strange woods all by myself so I gave up. I figured I can't make enough noise by myself to scare off the critters and I am counting potential human ones as well. I am more afraid of people in certain scenarios than animals. In my own woods I feel comfortable walking around at night as long as I have a flashlight to scare the bears away.
  7. There are a number of Native American Nations within the United States that do not allow Geocaching.
  8. Not necessarily. I see that as more based on the terrain or accessibility to the cache. There are simply some areas where you may not want to take small children. For example, I seem to recall someone having a cache hidden in a swamp. An adult would have a difficult time getting to the cache, so I don't believe you would want to take a child there. I would never put anything in a cache that a parent would not want their child to see such as a pornographic nature. I don't want to see it in a cache either, however I use the not for children attribute usually when it is close to a busy road. That road may not always be busy and an adult using caution should be fine but I would be horrified if little Johnny ran out in the street and got smucked by a semi during the find. This should be a family friendly game and any inappropriate material should be removed. I hope that so called ADULT caches never become a part of it. If someone wants them so bad I at least hope they are published on another site.
  9. What? I mean no disrespect but that is crazy. I don't understand that mentality. I mean sure you don't want people looking for caches that aren't there or are in very bad shape but don't you want to see more caches? Maybe you need more reviewers but I would think you would want the site to grow not shrink? Then again maybe your trying to be funny and I didn't pick up on it. I don't know your comment just seems odd too me. What's the matter? Your leg come off in his hand? A tone is really hard to perceive in a mediated form of communication like this forum. I'll just assume he meant it as a joke but really it is hard to perceive how someone means any statement so on a forum the best advice is to not take it very seriously especially since one's perception may be very different from the intent.

  11. I made an error on the title. I see no way to fix it. Sorry for the error.
  12. I for one am glad this was added. Could you imagine if it was not? There would be people digging up all sorts of areas including cemeteries. Not cool.
  13. I think so. Geocaching is a high-tech treasure hunt. I keep all the treasure boxes and bury 'em in my backyard. haha. See you should read the guidelines before going out. Geocaches are not allowed to be buried. This includes stolen, horded geocaches. You can store them inside as long as the place you are storing them is not a commercial venture. If it is you must keep your stolen geocaches outside, but only if you have received permission! He can bury them. He just needs to prove to the reviewer that he has permission from the property owner. Bury what? The caches or the previous cache owner? He can't bury the caches even with permission. Although I would assume the cache owner would be without permission. You may want to check with a cache reviewer on the burried cache part. As for the buried cache owners well, they seldom charge serial killers with burying the bodies. Do you really think he is burying cache owners? His post said "treasure boxes". Someone has been watching a little too much of Law and Order.
  14. Well, Being mid autumn now here in the Northern Hemisphere Geocaching has slowed down but this is a world wide game. We are so close to one million active caches. There are only 64,595 to go. Surely at this point over one million have been published but active are 935,405. So 55 days not counting the rest of today are left. That leaves us with an average of about 1,174.5 caches to be published or re-activated to give us one million before the end of the year. Realistically that looks like we will reach one million sometime in January or February but there is still hope we could make it. Just need a few days that are much greater than the average.
  15. If it is private land always get permission. The reviewer should not even publish it if there is no permission granted but regardless of that, permission should be granted before placing. You would be surprised how many places will give permission however if they don't scratch the idea until a new owner or manager is in place and even if there is not maybe go back in a year or two and ask again they might just change their minds but don't make to big of a deal about it if they say no. I plan on placing a multi cache on my land but i would not give permission to just anyone to place a cache on my land. Liability isn't the issue. The laws on that are pretty much a joke anyway, The reasons are for one I want the area open up for my cache and two I worry some idiot might smoke in the some tall dead grass on a very dry day and start a forest fire. I actually saw such an idiot while doing some caches during an event. I could not believe someone was quite that stupid.
  16. I feel for you. Some people are just jerks. I had cache that was out of sight but someone placed in clear view. Fortunately I checked on it that day. I hid it better. People that do these type of things shouldn't be allowed to participate but unfortunately there is no way to enforce that. Best you can do it try to pin point which cachers are the most inconsiderate and check you cache any time they find it. The caches I pass by often I check once a month. The caches that are a little more out of my way I check whenever I am by them or when I get 3 DNF's in a row, or if someone tells me it doesn't look right.
  17. There is an Attribute for Dangerous area. Sounds like a good cache to use it on.
  18. We asked the city mayer for one of them. That works
  19. I think you idea is very bad. Here is why. The present mindset of what is considered a Mirco, small, regular and large would remain for some time so it would just confuse people. I think a better idea would be to put small up and down arrows shown above and below the size indicator telling us if it is a smaller size micro, larger size small ect. Up meaning larger size and down meaning smaller size. I find plenty that are kind of in the middle of small and regular or micro and small. The arrows would be optional. No arrows would remain an option. Owners could then retain the system as it is not if they choose to do so.
  20. Warning don't read the following statements if you don't like a negative view: I was in it up to Weeblo or whatever it was maybe higher i don't really remember the ranks all that much. At the end I was pretty upset with the group and I threw all that junk away. All we ever did was meet and pay meeting dues for some reason. Not even once did we go camping or any outdoor activity other than once we had a Bonfire at the pack leader's home. Oh boy! :sarcastic: The dues were only 50¢ but as a 10 year old that was alot of money. I could have saved that from 10 meetings and bought a he-man action figure which I would have enjoyed more than those boring meetings. If I left it in package I could sell it on e-bay right now for a killing. I grew to hate scouts. The only reason I even stayed with it so long is that we were promised outdoor activity. Just a big ball of lies as far as I was concerned. A Geocaching club would be a far more useful group than scouts.
  21. Around here a high percentage of caches are in Cemeteries . Just about every cemetery around here has a geocache in it. they are part of the Spirit Quest series here in the midwest. Why not use cemeteries for geocaches? It is not like they have alot of other uses. I do feel that they should always be done in a respectful manner though, you know not real close to anyone's head stone or anything like that. They should be on a fence or in a tree or something of that nature. I don't much care for ones that lead you to some poor guy's headstone to use his date of death to solve a puzzle and find the cache. Those a far and few between thankfully and are usually an early hide of that particular user. I mean really it is just a container hid on the grounds. It is not like someone removed all the stones and put a Walmart on it. Once a cemetery gets old enough sometimes the stones are removed and they are used for a business, home or farm. that might be considered disrespectful. If anything caches respectfully placed in cemeteries increase awareness of those that lived before us. There seems to in genera, be a totally different mindset on caches in Cemeteries depending on where people live. Why is it people in Virginia tend to be most against them? Is it the media there? I wonder if it has something to do with the famous Arlington cemetery?
  22. Bummer! It beats 4.5 Lb. Walleye by two days. I'm betting the highest number of never found caches is in remote and/or arctic regions of Canada. Take a look at a few countries in Africa. In the Congo, for example, there are three caches in the entire country. None of them have ever been found. Maybe because in the Congo finding the cache has about the same odds as getting shot. I would feel safer looking for a cache in Iraq than the Congo. It is just such a violent place. It is so sad, if it was not for the fighting and political elements of the country it looks like it would be a beautiful place to see. The odd thing I see about some of these caches that are listed is that although they are remote they don't seem all that remote. Then again I never went for them so maybe I have no idea.

  24. Oh wow! That is extremely helpful. Thank you so very much. It will be alot of work matching these areas up with caches in those areas but it certainly is off to a good start. the only thing i don't like about that map is it does not name the tribe. I know some but not all of them. The ones within Wisconsin i pretty well know but i will need more research to find the rest. I really do appreciate the help from all of you. The latest post most of all. Thank you You can select "my topo" on the geocaching.com google map, and that will help in your research too. Bottom line is that it will take a lot of careful research. Wouldn't you know it one of the best ways to find them was right under my nose all the time. I am finding all sorts of them now. Thank you very much. It is still alot of work but it is happening. the only trouble I have now are these places where a tribe might have 10 acres here 20 there , maybe 30 in another spot scattered all over. It is easy to go now though to an area where the land is contiguous and find them. Many tribes have no caches on their land but I would say it is like one third to one quarter that do not have any at all. Most that do have them it is usually half a dozen or less. I have to search each state individually zooming in and out changing map modes and such but it is working. Some states have no Reservations. I found this odd but at least it makes my search easier.
  25. Thank you, I added them to my list. However I don't know what tribe owns the land they are on? Do you? I am much more familiar with the lands in my part of the country. Reservations in Montana The first cache I mentioned is on the Flathead Reservation. The second is on the Crow Reservation. We've found caches in Cut Bank, MT which is on the Blackfeet reservation and I know there are more on the Fort Peck Reservation. Jen So all of Cut Bank is on the Blackfoot Reservation? If so it would be easy for me to search there for caches. I would just have to put the city name into the geocache search engine. Thanks for the additional info. I will be using it. I checked further and Cut Bank is just outside the boundary. But there are 3 caches within the boundary, one near Cut Bank and 2 at East Glacier- try GC1FJ2E. On the Rocky Boy Reservation I see around 5 caches- try GC1T4DB. On the Fort Peck Reservation there is one that I spot, a real nice write up about the tribe is part of the description- GCQD5Z. I looked long and hard and with the help of the maps people gave on this thread along with the google maps for Geocaches I was able to look and see if the other two Reservations in Montana have any geocaches. Fort Belknap has one, GC1V5E5 I do not see any in the Cheyenne Nation. As we can see getting a Geocache published on native land is quite a task. trying to find them is not really easy either. I am so glad for the help from the forum I would still be on square one without your help. It looks like I have the state of Montana covered. Several states have no Reservations I was surprised to find this out but Illinois is one of them. So I have two states down. I am about half done looking in my home state of Wisconsin and also one cache to aim for within Canada. Despite what I thought earlier the Tiger map is helping a great deal. I just had to learn how to use it. This is an awful lot of work but it will be worth it. Interesting fact about special Reservation land use: Did you know that part of Back to the Future 3 was shot on a Reservation. Also some Native Americans were given a short acting job in that movie. They played 1885 natives. The scenes were shot with special permission from the tribe. It is in the commentary of the movie.
