  1. In Tennessee they are not only not allowed, but "to play at any game or amusement" is a Class E felony. Here is the relevant text:

Tennessee Cemetery & Burial Site Laws

    Statutory Laws

    (Tennessee Code Annotated)

    Title 46. Cemeteries

    46-2-105. Crimes and offenses

No person shall willfully destroy, deface, or injure any monument, tomb, gravestone, or other structure placed in the cemetery, or any roadway, walk, fence or enclosure in or-around the same, or injure any tree, plant or shrub therein, or hunt or shoot therein, play at any game or amusement therein, or loiter for lascivious or lewd purposes therein, or interfere, by words or actions, with any funeral procession or any religious exercises.

(A violation of this section is a Class E felony, punishable by 1 to 6 years in jail and a fine not to exceed $3,000)

We were in Tennessee weekend before last. Did some caching while there. From what we saw, there are a LOT of caches in cemeteries where we were. We did a little night caching and skipped over all of the cemetery caches simply because of the implications that can be made when someone is in a cemetery at night.

    Glad we skipped them!

Being from SC, I can assure you that the reviewer here will NOT allow caches anywhere near a cemetery. Even stages of a multi that are simply to gather information are not allowed. This is what I was told by the reviewer.

It all has something to do with a bit of legislation that would make it illegal to operate a GPSr on any historical grounds. These grounds included, among other things, cemeteries and, theoretically, could have been adapted by the state to include whatever they wanted.

Members of local geocaching associations sat with legislators and made an agreement to keep geocaching out of the area the lawmakers specified and the lawmakers would let the bill die. Again, this is what I understand from the SC reviewer.

Hence, there is no ACTUAL legislation, but geocaching folks in SC like to keep the status quo and stay on the state house's good side.

Once more, I am in now way an authority... this is just what I have understood from past conversations and emails.

Thanks for the insite but I have to say, what a bunch of nonsense in South Carolina, they are specifically targeting Geocachers. The Tennessee law looks like it is intended to nail people particularly teenagers that go to cemeteries to cause trouble. As in they can nail them with a larger penalty for destroying property in a cemetery. Inadvertently it may be effecting geocaching

  2. In Tennessee, "making any game" in a cemetery is illegal. US Federal cemeteries have rules against game playing in cemeteries.

I suspect that whoever is reviewing in South Carolina is requiring explicit and fully documented permission for any cemetery hide - as legislation was written (but not enacted) to make geocaching in cemeteries (and other historic areas) a felony. There may be other US States where reviewers are similarly cautious, and will require express and verifiable permission, but there is no written law (that I'm aware of)

Alright so Tennessee will never be part of the spirit quest series. I wonder where else though?

Who says you have to hide the cache INSIDE the cemetery? A simple micro outside the boundary and you've got it.

We have many here in Colorado that are just outside the fence line.

So they're not on cemetery property, but on someone elses property instead. Adequate permission is still required.

Unless it is in the right of way.

  4. I just put a post up about my sons geocoin that is MIA. His goal was pretty simple; to be found in some micro's so micro's wouldn't be so boring. I can't help thinking that if the first person who picked it up would have put it in a micro, it wouldn't be lost right now.

When you log a coin/TB, doesn't it bring up the info page? I can't remember if it does that automatically. I always look up the trackable I find because I'm curious if there's a story behind it.

It brings up the page but that's no guarantee that people will read it. I hope it pops back up soon!

Yes that is true. every once in a while even in extremely secure caches people will treat a geocoin or TB as a trade item and not log it at all. this is especially true of new cachers. I found an unexpected travel bug in a cache near me recently. the thing is listed as being in Arizona. it is in Wisconsin. That sucks I know but it happens. Some MIA travels do wind up appearing again even years after they went missing so there is always hope.

  5. You guys are so off topic, that I feel I must say something about it.

We try to show each other respect in these forums. I have no idea why this was brought up, but what a way throw a thread totally off topic.

To the OP, at the top of the geocoin forums is a thread called "Groundspeak's Current Coin Tracking Policy". That's the one you want to read. Since trackables are not all geocoins, it applies to other trackable items too.

    Many thanks Eartha,

I was a little bit disappointed when this "argument" started. Ruud4d did answer my question earlier, that I could buy 50 trackable numbers from Groundspeak. If I decide to go all out on placing trackable items, doing it that way will save a lot of money. 50 numbers @ $1.50 each = $75 at todays rates that's £49.95. In UK 5 Dog tags = £19.95.

Do the Math, in the economic climate at the moment every pound / dollar saved is a bonus. As this is a good healthy hobby then it is worthwhile pursuing.

I wouldn't say there was an argument. I was stating my opinion of a non Groundspeak trackable based off a comment from another user. I have since edited my comments not to include them just so it doesn't turn into a thread about that. I apologize for posting my comments not for the comments themselves but for posting them on this thread because it was off topic.

Anyway about those numbers. That is just the numbers that cost $1.50 each. You still need someone to make your trackable. If you can do it yourself that is wonderful if not you will need someone to design it a company to make it and Groundspeak has to approve it. That part shouldn't be too difficult I get the idea they just want it to be G rated and not violating any copyright laws. They wouldn't want a disney character on it for example unless Disney gave its written consent and if they did I'm sure Disney would want a good cut too. I wish you well with this and hey maybe I will come across one of yours someday.

  6. That little video is 1:52 long. I can't even begin to describe trackables in 1:52 minutes, let alone geocaching. You'll find the information in the video at the end where he says "and more helpful tips!".

I disagree. A brief mention about them and where to go for further information would have worked. After it mentions the trade items it should state: "Geocaches also can contain items not intended to be traded like Travel bugs, geocoins and disposable cameras that have a special purpose for details visit geocaching.com and search the links.

I'm not saying a vivid description has to be made just enough to make new ones aware. Then again no matter what, there will always be some who do as they like anyway.

Perhaps so, but that little video was probably made by a geocacher, and submitted to Groundspeak, who then thought it would be a nice addition on the home page. It's up to us as geocachers to teach our newbies well. this can be done at events, and through polite emails, if someone appears in need of help. I really do think Groundspeak is doing all it can to educate people about geocaching and all aspects of the game. Like I said, you can lead a horse (cacher) to water (the webiste), but you can't make him drink (read).

There are hundreds of geocacher-made videos on youtube, too.

I would agree with you for the most part but I remember when I first started it took me some time to see any info on the proper edict for TB and geocoins and I had some knowledge of them and believe me I looked. Then pathtags get thrown in there and that confused me for a day or two. They are not the same as TB's and Geocoins. Geocaching.com is not the easiest site to navigate therefore information is not always as easy to find for a new person as you might think . After you get used to it then it is fine but it is something to get used to. Yes, I agree that most of the problem is with the users not looking over the info not Groundspeak but I don't feel it is 100% the users either. Thanks for your insight, it gave me something to think about. I'm getting sick of the subject now but thank you.

  7. Tekkguy. If you ever happen to see this I want to thank you for showing me that we can put people on ignore. It took awhile but I found it. There is one particular poster I put on ignore. Not that I have anything in particular against him he just annoys me because he doesn't know when to shut up. Thanks again for showing me that.

  8. To the OP if you want a personal Geocoin you can design one or have someone design one for you. It will cost you a good sum to do so. If they are not activated you could sell some to pay for them but up front it will cost you a few thousand dollars to do so. I suppose that is why the West bend chamber of commerce went with pathtags but nothing may have been better.

  9. Having read the coins goal, it might be a good idea to include some wording to the fact that you don't care about mileage. Most cachers who move trackables do so with the assumption that owners want their bugs to move and aquire mileage...if you don't care about that aspect, it should be noted in the goal.

Good idea. i will add that.

  11. Groundspeak really has to do a better job of educating people about trackables they get treated as trade items WAY too often. That is still better than them vanishing all together because there is a chance they will go back out.

Well. let's just see. Groundspeak has this page, right on the home site, there's a link to it, and then it has all the links to take you from Travel Bug to Geocoin.

Then, if you missed that and came to the forums to find out, we have this post, and it's posted in the Travel Bug and the Geocoin forums, where one might go to look.

But if you missed that there is this thread, where you can read answers and post questions.

And for good measure, there is a whole big Knowledge Book section dedicated to trackables.

Also, Groundspeak has sent out trackable information in the weekly newsletter, off and on, that all cachers get in their email.

Do you want Groundspeak to take out billboards on all the major highways, and ads in the local papers? People need to read the information provided for them. You can lead a cacher to the information, but you can't make him read it. It's up to the cacher to educate themselves, and and it's up to us, as geocachers, to educate others.

Alright, they do more than I even noticed. I applaud those efforts. However when a basic description of geocaching is given like in the little youtube video now on the homepage trade items are mentioned but trackables are not. This might lead some to believe all items in a geocache are trade items. This is not so. Would I like to see billboards mentioning it? No, because it would be a high cost and not effective. Billboards with any more than 7 words and if they don't read the web site info they wont read the paper either. However mentioning them whenever it is appropriate would be a good idea. I do appreciate the efforts Groundspeak has put forth but feel they could do more.

  12. Better hurry only 55 left. this is the best price I ever saw on any trackable.

    Not any more!

I wasn't planning on getting any trackables any time soon but this was just too good of a deal. I ordered 7 of them. One I will give to a friend and the other 6 I will send on missions, not sure what those missions are yet but I'm sure I will think of something. One for sure I will send to the Tropical rainforest of South America or Africa to go where monkeys live in the wild. Then let is swing around down there.

  13. Oh no... minus 3 points! Say it isn't so.... lol. That is like "who's line is it anyway". The Points Don't Matter!

That is really an absurd way of attempting to keep your trackable moving.

Even though the points don't matter you (or at least I) can't help some feeling of denigration. BTW, it was minus ten, FWIW :surprise:

However, from the tone of the owner's reply to my email, it seemed that he couldn't care less what happened to his coin but now that I'd taken it I was in his competition whether I liked it or not. My reason for moving trackables is the warm glow of self-satisfaction that I get from helping other people and imagining the pleasure the owner would get when reading my log. So that reply felt like a smack across the face with a wet kipper!

See now that is an example of an impossible goal. I one out there with a somewhat impossible goal. It is not impossible as written but had I written it exactly the way I wanted it to go it would have been unrealistic. As a grabber I always try my best to help the goal. If the trackable has a specific target that is easy. Say it wants to go to Illinois or Washington D.C., it is very easy to just move it a little closer, if say it wants to be placed in caches in public parks only, I save it until I do one in a public park. if it wants to get miles as fast as possible I move it as fast and far away as I can. One trackable with such a goal I moved a mere 2 and a half miles. But it was a very good move. The cache it was in vanished shortly after I grabbed the TB and it traveled many more miles as a result. It was on a race for miles within a certain time. It is now trapped in a TB hotel or at least I hope so and someone didn't come and steal it. it has been there for some time. I am starting to see why some people don't like TB hotels. They are just too big of a concentration of TB. I am starting to see them as more of concentration camps for TB rather than what they are intended to be and that is a place to exchange Travelers for others and if the cache itself gets stolen or destroyed all those travelers go away too. Dispersing them increases the chance for survival. I have even seen trackables vanish from a cache that is stored inside. It is the final of a two stage. I think someone treated them as trade items. Groundspeak really has to do a better job of educating people about trackables they get treated as trade items WAY too often. That is still better than them vanishing all together because there is a chance they will go back out.

  14. sorry if i appear to be blunt, but... what's the big deal? why make a big fuss about it?

I don't think Max is making a big fuss, sometimes you just need to come here and release the angst by commiserating with others who have had the same thing happen to their coin. Maybe share some advice to help our travelers.

We chat, shake our heads at the situation, and move on.

    Well put

  15. I've pretty much learned to stay away from goals that can be broken. Most of the goals I set on travelkers now tend to be vague, and can't really be broken. Half the fun of travelers is to watch HOW they get where they are going, not just to see them get there. I've seen people offer to "Mail this thing to it's final destination". but the real goal if to meanter around getting there, otherwise the owner could just have done it themselves.

To the OP, if you tell us what traveler you're talking about, we'll all be able to share in your pain.

I post this by saying first my apologies to the person who has my trackable if anything I said in this thread has been offensive to you. That is not my intent of the thread but not everything comes across as intended in mediated conversation. My intent is to get a better understanding of how I can get my trackables to achieve their goals and a better understanding of how the majority thinks because I always tend to be a person who thinks of things differently than others. Here is the trackable. http://www.geocaching.com/track/details.as...60-370e157ba86a

I want to note that I did add some further instruction to the trackable's page. I figured the goal was very very simple. It was to go into cemetery caches only. If the cache was not in a cemetery it was not to be placed in the cache. So far it has actually met that goal as far as the logs go but the last web log threatened to dip it in a non cemetery cache for miles. Um, why for miles? i couldn't care less about it getting alot of miles. I just want it to keep going from cemetery cache to cemetery cache. This is the traveler I was speaking of mostly but I also I wanted to know what to do in the future and with my other travelers. I just really find it annoying to have my goal completely disregarded over the assumption I want many miles on it. I must note I added the please no dipping after the fact. Had it been dipped in a micro I would not be so annoyed. However some micros this would fit into. I started it in a cache listed as micro. So far no foul but it looks like it is intended. It is clear the holder knows the goal. i have a hard time understanding then why they want to disrupt it? The idea is I wanted to look at all the places it has been and see the placement of cemeteries off of that. A non cemetery cache will kind of mess that up. I guess the main thing is it didn't vanish but it still is disappointing. perhaps the holder will listen and not dip it but wait for a cemetery cache. Then again they could listen and the next person messes it up. I guess I can't worry too much about it.

  16. So, anyone know how two users can pull a geocoin from the same cache? I was expecting to see it passed from the hands of one to another instead the record shows they both pulled it from the same cache. Huh? I emailed both users but neither one has yet replied.

  17. maybe they thought the TB already (kinda) reached its goal and so it would be ok to move it elsewhere? :)

That is not the case for most of mine. Two I plan to set free are to go in opposite directions. One to be placed in a cache east of the one it was found in one west of the cache it was found in. the idea is the two will circle the globe always traveling in one basic direction. Someone is sure to mess that up three or four listings later like they always do but you never know. At least there is a 50/50 chance o matter who it goes to unless that person intentionally disrupts the goal. Large bodies of water will be the biggest challenge. Two others will be released one with the goal of getting to the arctic circle and the other the antarctic circle. that will be a challenge but if everyone keeps moving them the correct direction it can happen. Yes I did check. There are caches they will fit in in both the arctic and antarctic.

  18. Yes, I would rather it sit for a year than have the goal broken. I do not put impossible missions on them.

to each their own and good luck with that :)

Thanks, I think. What I am looking for here is anyone have any suggestions to maybe make my goals more likely to be filled? I put a paper with each one stating the goal and also list it on the coin's page. I make it as understandable as I can. I feel this is the best I can do. So far only one of my trackables has been lost but I did just start last year.

Question for all of you. One of my trackables has been listed as retrieved from the same cache by two different cachers. How is this possible? If it was handed off it should state that it went from the hands of one cacher to another not from the same cache right? i am confused.
