  1. So, I wanted to do a caching trip where I choose a random zip code and head toward that zip code getting all small-large caches along the way on my side of the road avoiding the interstate. Problem is the system only lets you go up to 500 miles. also it does not let you pick just one side of the road. It is a neat feature but I am disapointed with the limitations. Is there a way to generate a map bigger than 500 miles?

Here's the way I do something similar.

Create the route in Google My maps.

    Save the route as KML

Import the route into a PQ.

Run a PQ 0.5 Km each side. This may be too big for you, try 0.2Km.

Optionally run a second PQ 5Km either side just showing virtuals and earth caches

Load the PQ into GSAK, ensure the user flag column is visible

Run the Google Earth macro to view the caches along the route

Tick the user flag in GSAK for the caches you want to delete

    Filter to user flag set.

    Delete the whole filter.

  3. Thanks to all who DID NOT give snotty answers, seriously that is childish. Yes I have permission you cannot hide caches without permission anyway so no kidding! Anyway the marine Velcro was a good idea although I looked into it and Industrial streanth velcro should do the trick. Thanks.

  4. Hi everybody. I am looking some advice on one of my hides. It is the first one I used Velcro to attach the cache. the problem is that when it got cold outside the sticky part released an the cache disappeared. My question for all of you is can anyone recommend a brand of Velcro that has a strong adhesive? i need one side to stick to duct tape and the other side to stick to painted aluminum. thank you

  5. Are you using one of the three "Print" links just below the coordinates? That gives a print-formatted page with great big GC codes, eg and I quote,

    GC64V92

(I'm using a current version of Firefox; your mileage may vary.)

This was helpful. No I wasn't I just printed it off. It looks a lot better that way. I like printing them it gives me something tangible to work with. I use a laser printer so it doesn't use alot of ink, I have literally been on the same ink for 3 years and the paper I reuse junk mail and the like. So ya I like using paper. To each his own I guess.

  6. I don't understand it. I still have some older print outs of older geocaches I haven't found yet. On them the GC code is large and dark, very easy to read. Now they are small in the corner and we have a hard time reading them. I prefer the print outs vs going paperless because you can write notes and such on them and it trains you to have a pen handy. I have messaged geocaching several times over this and it was basically a tough luck response. Anyone else have this issue?

  7. I don't understand it why is it getting to a point that there is like 80% micro hides. I find this annoying since all you do is find and sign no treasure. I like seeing what is in there although I rarely trade and grabbing trackables. All the micros make this impossible. There are a few trackables that fit in the larger micros but these are few and far between. To me Quality of caches is better than quantity of caches. I have one micro out there and 13 small to large caches. The micro is an unusual hide and I put it there to commemorate me getting 200,000 miles on my car. It is a larger micro and I started a trackable in it but that is an exception to my rule. I prefer hiding larger caches.

  8. Quite frankly I feel any geocoin based philosophy religion, or politics are stupid and that includes Atheism and Patriotism. A geocoin endorsing Atheism is especially idiotic. On the other hand I feel one should be allowed to have free speech and if they wish to make such a thing they should be allowed to do so however if someone feels another ay they should be allowed to express that as well. Any trackables of this type of nature though I see in circulation I do not grab. I just leave them be in the cache. My feeling is that they should stay agenda neutral.

  9. Strange thing has happened to a couple caches in my area. the logs were stolen out of them and any other contents as well. One was my cache the other had one of my trackables in it.
I just received a Disabled Cache listing in my email for GC1T0WW, "Fore" by TonkaMN. Reason: Log missing. That's in your area, isn't it?

    The miracle of uncanny timing.

    Gotta love it.

Funny, That cache was on my to do list last time i was out there. never got to it.

  10. Archeologists theorize that the first GPS was created by Grnt Oggde in about 1,000,000 BC. He immediately sat down and waited for a signal. On a side note the very first McDonald's is believed to have been built on the very site where Mr. Oggde starved to death waiting for that signal.

That comment reminds me of a local geocache WP. A guy buried in the 19th century and is under the sign for McDonald's

  11. You know you write things in the cache description on your hide and add attributes for a reason. Some people just don't take a moment to look at them. I can put not kid friendly and they complain it is not a good place for kids. Um, no kidding that's why I put that attribute on there and put it in the description. First line of the description can say it is near private land be sure not to trespass and what do they do? Yes, trespass. you just can't win.

  12. Well, it turns out it was not exactly stolen. A new user who doesn't know what he is doing picked it up. i know the kid he is 13 or so. Why he left the bag it was in and the paper stating the goal is beyond me. I really wish he would have just left it alone. On the bright side I can ask if he has any more and help him log them properly.

  13. Why in the world would anyone steal a Bonobo Monkey that is activated? I mean if they go to sell it someone can just look up who owns it and they can't really show it to people other than those that also are thieves. hopefully whoever stole it is dumb enough to share it and others put a discovered note on it. Then I can message them and tell them it is mine. Do they not realize that as the owner of the trackable you forever have the tracking number. i hope this jerk tries to sell it to me. You know what i am going to check e-bay they might just be dumb enough to put it up for sale. All in all i hope whoever took it really just neglected to take the bag and goal sheet and just didn't get around to logging it yet. That is the best case scenario.

  14. So I placed a new trackable in a cache with a goal sheet and a bag to protect it. Less than 4 days later another find is on the cache from someone who participates in moving trackables. it would have been great for them to grab it but when they got there the trackable is gone and nobody signed the log but the bag and goal sheet remain. This is a bad sign isn't it? i am hoping the person who grabbed it is either a former finder that didn't know enough to grab the bag and goal sheet but I fear it was simply stolen. What do you guys think? Is this a sure sign it was stolen or is it likely to show up again? it really was nothing special just a Bonobo the monkey from oak coins.

  15. I would post a "found it" and this is what I think your log should say:

This cache is not too far from me and I've been meaning to do it for some time. It was muggled before I could get to it, but thankfully the CO has re-hidden it some distance from the original. The cache is claimed to be "recommended for kids" and this is implied by the cache description as well as by the attribute. While I suspect it was safe for kids at the original hiding place, IMO it isn't now.

As I began the hunt, I noticed an issue with the coords. This was my first outing with a brand-new Dakota 20 and the GPSr had put me within six to ten feet of each of a series of caches prior to having a go at this one, but for this cache it put me in a clump of trees on the other side of a fairly busy road and about 80ft from where the cache actually is. I looked at the hint but couldn't see the mentioned feature anywhere that made sense. I checked the logs and found that a couple of cachers had given up with their GPSrs and just used the hint - so I did the same. The cache turned out to be in a hedgerow at the side of the road. There's no verge - so I had to stand half on the road (possibly obscured from view by the hedgerow vegetation) to retrieve the cache and a few cars passed me a little too close for comfort while I was doing that. Since the cache was placed, a fresh and vigorous growth of nettles has appeared - which doesn't help to make this an easy retrieve or replace.

After visiting this cache, I'm concerned for the safety of the kids as cachers probably will take their kids looking for this one (based on the description and attribute). The posted coords are for a location that would be perfectly safe - so a quick check on Google Maps won't show the danger. The coords being way off is another matter. FWIW I had taken an averaged waypoint for which the Dakota indicated 95%-ish confidence, but from inexperience I deleted it before I'd written it down somewhere safe - and so I can't post corrected coords in my log.

    SL. TFTC.

tactfully message the cache owner. no big deal. What are you worried about. the worst thing that could happen is the cache owner gets upset at you and thinks you are sticking your nose where it doesn't belong is so who cares..

  16. I really like the cheaper trackable items. It is not that I have anything against $10 and higher Geocoins they look great and are nice to borrow for a little while. They are great. The problem is that the cooler it is and more expensive it is the more likely someone is to treat it as a trade item or simply steal them and the ones that outright get thrown away because they are in a cache that someone mistakes for garbage (or they toss it out because they are jerks) or they get lost in another way. Any of them can go MIA but it seems the cheaper ones tend to stay in circulation longer. Then there is the fact that you get two or three of them for the price of one of the cooler more expensive ones. So it is nice to see the expensive geocoins but for my money cheaper ones are a better value. I want to thank those companies that offer such wonderful products.

  17. Some just don't feel they need to report the find on the internet just because they feel it is a waste of time. Others don't bother ever logging any online because geocaching.com is a nightmare to navigate. I have gotten used to it so to me it is no big dal but visually the site is poor at best. A professional redesign of the site would be nice.
