  1. Trail use Segways have a maximum 10 mile range which means they have to turn back well before the midway point in order to bring the equipment and customer back safely.

Multi-use trails are for everybody. Hikers (generally not involved with Geocaching) are exclusionists and really dislike sharing the trail with anybody else on bicycles, wheelchairs (motorized or not) and horses.

After you step over or through a big pile of road apples or go through a giant mush puddle created by the half-ton creatures, a Segway on the trail is pretty minor in comparison when put in the proper perspective.

Something against horses? personally i would rather step in horse poop than other animal poop, like dog crap. this may because i ride horses but even still, horse poop just doesnt have that nasty quality.

I hike, bike, and ride horses so maybe im not objective but i totally get the exclusionist attitude. i think segways are rediculous but if its multiuse, who cares.

  2. I have an ASUS 1000he. i think a lot of the specs like processor, ram, hd etc are all pretty similar across the board with many netbooks. What led me to this particular model was the claimed 9hrs of battery life. let me tell you, it may not last 9 hours but it sure does last forever. i would say that it gets an easy 7 hours, which compared to my girlfriends macbook which gets maybe 4 it makes a huge difference.

It doesnt play video online very well. some websites work ok with video and some are just choppy. you have to get used to the smaller sized keyboard but it really isnt that bad.

I run mapsource with TOPO 2008, a few 24k topos, and a few downloaded free topos. also use cachemate and gsak without a hitch. and i upload everything to my gps and palm.

i mainly use mine for school, since it is so small and light its easy to carry around in my backpack and take notes on.

Ive never had any problems with mine, ive had it a little under a year and have been very happy.

  3. I do not have a "Marine" icon. When I hit FIND I get: Waypoints, Geocache, Cities, POI, Exits, Recent Find and Geographic Points. Nothing Marine.

they will only show up if you have the tide charts loaded. otherwise there wont be one. did you download and install that link on garmin's website for the tide points?

My vista will only show icons for items currently loaded on the gps

:) The download worked great, I sent the map from Mapsource to my gps and now I have Marine info with tide charts. Unfortunately, it looks like I overwrote my Ibycus topo SD card. When I go to "Setup" -> "Map" on my GPS the only selection I have is Tide Points. If I turn it off, I still have no topo.

I'm not sure how to get two maps onto an SD card from Mapsource, I'll have to play around with it. I still have Ibycus on a CD so I can replace it.

its super easy! ok go into mapsource, at the upper left hand corner of mapsource there should be a dropdown menu. It should have all the maps you have installed in a list (if this doesnt make sense, another way is to click "view" then click "switch to product" then choose "GPS MAP 162/168 Tide Points" then use the map select tool to select the area for the tide points you want.

THEN, go back to "view" then "switch to product" then "Ibycus USA 2.01" (or whichever Ibycus you have) This should open up a new map, then just select the map segments you want.

To double check look at the list that shows thhe selected maps and it should contain all the maps both ibycus and tide points.

then just send everything to your gps with the "send to GPS icon"

Unfortunately in garmins infinite wisdom you cannot add any map files to your gps without overwriting all existing maps

  4. I do not have a "Marine" icon. When I hit FIND I get: Waypoints, Geocache, Cities, POI, Exits, Recent Find and Geographic Points. Nothing Marine.

  5. Ok, so im using geosetter and i am able to geotag my photos. I export the file as a kmz file. it opens in google earth, my tracklog is included and all the pictures are there.

The problem is google earth only shows one photo along the track log. i dont understand why, if i expand the folder i shows my 70 pictures and i can click on them and they open, but there really isnt a way to see where on the track log they are (when the open they cover the whole screen). I just want my tracklog to have a mini preview along the track log so i know where all my photos were taken.

    ideas?

  6. SS,

I'll see if I can help.......

You are SOL on using yesterday's "saved" track for geotagging. Reason? because, you have cleared the memory and, when you "save" a track to internal memory, as Red90 said, the unit strips time, elevation, date away. (and the time of the trackpoint is what would be used for geotagging)

Since you have not cleared TODAY's memory, download today's trip and what you will see in Mapsource is "two" tracks. One will be named "Active Log" and the other will have whatever name it was named when you saved it.

"Active Log" will have ALL the data whereas the "saved" track will "look" the same when displayed, but will have time, elevation, date missing. Look at "track properties" on each of those two files, compare which columns are present/or missing.

When you log tracks to the card, it logs ALL the data there also, so for geotagging, you MUST use either the "Card file" or the Active Log .

When you "Clear Track Log" on your unit, what you are doing is deleting the Active Log from memory,( what you see as the breadcrumb trail on the GPS screen). Clearing the track log DOES NOT delete anything from the card, if you have been logging to the card also.

    Hope this helps.

There is a slight problem with your approach. When I connected my GPS to Mapsource and receive the tracks, I got more than one active track. There are a total of 71 active tracks. I decided to use "ctrl" and select all 71 tracks and save it as a GPX file since they're all dated as 10/15/2009 as Mapsource indicated. The GPX file is 1.53MB which is rather big for a 1 day file. I'm not quite sure why that's the case. In general, none of my previous GPX files are over 1MB unless I did a lot of moving. Certainly I didn't do that much moving yesterday (probably moved over 150miles and the unit is recording constantly as I set it to record most often).

When I used a program like G7to open up the GPX file, everything seems like a mess. The first 25% of the track have data from October 15th, 2009, then the next 50% is October 16th, 2009, and the final remaining 25% is October 15th, 2009. I checked my previous tracklogs that were saved to the microSD and they didn't have the same "problem" that I just notice. Is there something wrong that I did when I transferred the files over to Mapsource?

Basically, what I want is this, I want to save all of the data from October 15th, 2009 as one GPX file as it contains all of the essential information for geotagging. How do I do this? Should I have selected all 71 active tracks in Mapsource to save as a GPX file? How do I know which track to save? I don't want to take any risks here and want all of the GPS information that the unit recorded.

One final thing and since I'm not too sure how this works, I'm not going to clear the memory on the unit. I just bought a new micro-SD and I'll stick that into the unit. Will it start recording data for October 16th, 2009? The track menu indicate that the unit is currently 55% full. So even though it's 55% full, I'm assuming that the first 55% of the data that has been recorded to the active track of the unit, they're not going to be transferred over to the micro-SD card right? As soon as I insert the micro-SD card in, then only data from the moment that the GPS unit is turned on will be recorded?

Btw, I'm currently in Shanghai so the timezone has been set to GMT+8 and I know the information in the track are saved in the UTC time zone.

Again, I don't want to take any risks here so I'm not going to clear the memory so that all data from the active track of October 15th, 2009 will be preserved until I receive some clear instructions on how to make sure every trace of info is saved properly. Since the unit's track menu indicate it's 55% full, I'm going to let it run until it reaches 99%. What happens once it reaches 99%? Will it start deleting old data from the unit to record new data? I don't have the "wrap log" option on the unit ticked. Since that option isn't ticked, I'm assuming that no further coordinates will be recorded to the GPS' active track, but it'll continue to write to the micro-SD? Will there be any detrimental effects to leaving the GPS active track at 99% while there is a micro-SD in the GPS?

One last thing and that is whether I'm capable of viewing the GPX files that are stored on the micro-SD on the GPS itself? Can I view file sizes from the Garmin unit? I can't seem to be able to do so. If I can, then at least I know the unit is recording information on to the memory card and I won't have to be afraid that something screwy is happening.

Sorry for the long post, but if you can answer all of my questions precisely then at least it'll help alleviate the paranoia in me! Thx for the help in advance bud!

If you opened up all your tracks, you mentioned something about 71 different ones. there is an option to join selected tracks, you can just highlight everything from the same date, right click and then "join selected tracks"

If you dont have a sd card in now, and you put one in, it will not log the current active log. It will just start logging from the time you put the card in and turn the unit on.

If you let the unit get to 99% and you have the wrap feature off, it will just stop logging data, if wrap is on, it will start overwriting the oldest tracks.

I think the only way to view the GPX files is to put the garmin into usb mode then copy them from the card to your computer. also i dont think you can see file sizes, but assuming you have the correct choices checked on the garmin, and the card is in it should be logging.

From what i read and understand, you should choose to log the data to your sd card. and you should occasionally remove them from the card (where they will be logged by date).

I personally log to the sd card, and i clear the tracklog on my vista hcx when it gets full, which does not affect the logs on the card.

  7. Icdgirl,My 76csx came with Americas Marine Point Data Base on it,and I dont recall seeing many Canadian tide stations on that, maybe a few but not many.I have since purchased the blue chart cd to also get Canadian tide charts,I have lots now,and because that cd is now disscontinued, and will soon be only available as a chip.Which means you cant view any of it on a computer. If you are interested in this cd try gpscentral.ca in Calgary.I have bought lots from them and they have better prices than anyplace in the Vancouver area.As another alternative Canadian tide charts are free online and you can print them out,but I dont think you'll get them from Garmin for free.

you sure can get them for free from garmin and they are very complete.

here is the coverage of canada

    tides.jpg

  8. get the legend HCx. I have a vista HCx and had an old Vista before that. I like the compass feature just because it makes my life easier but it is not necessary. i got the vista hcx for the altimeter/barometer

On the other hand expandable memory is a must for me. I have a small segment of Santa Barbara, CA and surrounding areas loaded from topo 2008 + the contours from gpsfiledepot.com's free CA topo + tide data and i think that is about 60mb. which is a lot for what little map info i have. 24mb is nothing.

you'll be happier with expandable rather than a compass.

  9. I have read some older posts on this topic but can't find anything that will help me. Basically, I bought my 60CSx because a friend had one, and I liked the Tide Chart info it provided. I was reassured when I bought mine that it had that capability. (My friend purchased MetroGuide Canada v4 but NOT bluechart maps.)

So now, I don't have Tide Charts on mine! I called Garmin support and they said I would have to purchase Bluechart maps to get tide info. But I want to use my Topo sd card because I primarily use it for hiking. Believe it or not, knowing when the tide is high or low is very helpful when hiking on the Wet Coast of BC!

Has anyone else come across this problem? I think Garmin changed their products over the years, and the newer versions don't have tide charts. If that's the case, how can I use 2 mapsets on my gps?

    http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=161

Download the second download link, i have US topo, topo 2008, and a national parks west, among other maps and it just added an additional mapset which has tide points for the US and Canada.

My topo 2008 has tide info, but this one is more complete in coverage

EDIT: when you say topo sd card, is that preloaded from garmin? if thats the case, i dont know if you will be able to add this mapset i posted a link for. all of my maps are on CDs/DVDs

  10. To answer the original question, no I don't think all of the Topo 2008 will fit, it exceeds the segment limit. But you really don't want to do that anyway, it would take a couple days to compile and download.

    Jim

Yea you are correct, i think you *might* be able to get half of the US. but definitely not the whole thing

  11. You might want to take your etrex along for accuracy when under cover. Most people disable WAAS since you will never see them anyhow and the constant searching does seem to make it less accurate. It would be interesting to head out with both of them pointing to a cache in an area with some (or lots) of tree cover and see which one somes closer.

As to all the settings and complexity you can do just fine with it using the default settings and make changes as you learn it.

I get a lock on WAAS just about every time i use my gps...

  12. I just have my local area installed. I have Topo 2008 + tide data + the contours from CA Topo.

Its pretty easy to transfer a new mapset if i travel to another area. I also have a Etrex Vista HCx

Oh and to put the maps on, you just select the tiles you want and then click the button that has an arrow pointing down to a little gps unit. its on the toolbar by the tile selction tool

  13. What on earth do you need 4GB for?

It takes more than 2GB to load all the CN and Topo maps. I currently have a 2GB card, and have all the continental US CN maps, but only about half the Topo maps for the US loaded. While I don't need all the US maps all the time, I'd rather just load them once, rather than have to reload if I'm going to an area that I don't have maps loaded.

Arent you near the map segment limit?? i cant fit all of my TOPO maps because i go over the 2025 or whatever the limit is.

  14. I will have to check that, but I do recall otherwise. >.>

Hermione's parents are muggles (so she's muggleborn). Both are dentists. That is why they are so interested in seeing Gringgot's Bank and she puts a memory charm on them and sends them to Australia while she is on the run with Harry and Ron.

You joined up just to back me up about Harry Potter! woohoo! welcome to the forum.

  15.

Some Muggles, however, know of the Wizarding world. These include Muggle parents of magical children, such as Hermione Granger's parents, the Muggle Prime Minister (and his predecessors), the Dursley family (Harry Potter's non-magical and only living relatives), and non-magical spouses of witches and wizards.

I feel the need to point out that 1:

while 'half blood' is the proper term, those who only have one 'non muggle' parent are also often referred to as 'mud bloods', especially by the elitist "pure bloods"

    and 2:

Hermione was a mudblood. I am 90% sure her mother was a witch. (though it's been a while since I have read the series.)

"mudblood" is only used to refer to those who have two non-magical parents. "half-blood" doesnt typically come up in a derogatory way in the books.

Hermione was indeed a "mudblood" or more nicely put a "muggle born" BUT neither of her parents were magical.
