  1. Hi gnbrotz, To transfer groups of waypoints back and forth between your garmin and your PDA, forget about cachemate and go download and install the freebie GPilotS palm program and get yourself a serial garmin/PDA cable. I have many groups of waypoints stored in GPilotS and I just upload the particular series I want when need demands it whilst away from home. e.g on a recent visit to Australia I had separate files of waypoints for each state. Whilst I did have most of the waypoints loaded into the gps before I left home, the PDA file storage was a vital backup when far from my PC. At home, I have stored the waypoints for the various gps orienteering caches around the country each in their own file and these will stay only in the PDA until I eventually get to visit the appropriate city and want to find a particular cache - it is only then that I will upload the orienteering waypoints to the gps. GPilotS also has other features you may want to investigate, such as tracks etc. Have fun. Cheers
  2. You don't need much of a Palm. I use an m105 (8 megs of memory) and that is ample for paperless caching. It also doesn't cost a lot and if I destroy or lose it out in the field it will be cheaply replaced with another. I use a garmin 12xl gpsr which can store only 500 waypoints. I load extra waypoints into my PDA using a gps/pda serial cable (which I keep in my caching bag) and the GPilotS freebie palm program. I can then swap waypoints back and forth between the two devices. I use GSAK as my main PC caching program and although I do have Cachemate on the PDA, I prefer to use iSilo (palm) for the storage and viewing of cache html files (requires iSiloX on the PC).

    Cache Attributes

My heads hurting. Can we go back to the KISS principle? It will take ages to file a cache report with all this carryon.
  4. Due to snow falling on the day of proposed travel Red Dog was totally against going outdoors. He much preferred to stay by the gas fire. Hopes to move on next month when BaldEd has his next weekend (i.e. Sat and Sun off).
  5. Thanks annekat for your description of the various types of lasers. The laser pointer that was the cause of this thread was made in China and is listed on the box as being a Class II Laser Product; Laser Diode; Wavelength: 630 - 680nm; Max output <3mW. As the power output could be >1mW, I guess it could be classified as a Class IIIa! Thanks also to geoSquid for your references. That was the sort of info I was interested in. It just seemed incongruous to me that pocket knives and multitools are banned cache items but that lasers pointers were not on the list. As for all the red necks out there I hope you all feel better now. It has been an interesting thread.
  6. I recently uplifted a laser pointer from a cache and had a little play with it. From reading all the information on the box it came in I think these things are more dangerous than multitools and pocket knives in the hands of children, and as such should be a banned cache item. Kids just won't be able to stop themselves from pointing them at others and there is apparently a very definite serious eye danger. What do you think? My local $2 shop has these things for sale so I guess they are very common everywhere.
  7. Alls well. Georgy Gecko has been found hibernating in front of a fireplace. Will be moving on soon.
  8. Red Dog has wandered off and will reappear somewhere soon.
  9. Elias wrote Jun21 2004 What's the latest estimate when this facility will be available? I want to be a premium member but have been completely stopped in my quest by PainPal for some reason known only to their computer!
  10. Welcome classic55ford, Make your selection from one of the geocaching.com web pages containing a list of caches by clicking the box on the right hand side of the page opposite the cache(s) you are interested in. Note you will need to be logged in to GC for the boxes to be available. At the bottom of the same page click the 'download waypoints' button. The waypoints are then downloaded to your computer. The file containing them is called "geocaching.loc". If you have downloaded and installed a copy of EasyGPS on your computer, then just doubleclicking the "geocaching.loc" file will open EasyGPS with your downloaded waypoint data displayed. From within EasyGPS the coordinates can easily be uploaded to your GPS through an appropriate data cable. Whilst EasyGPS is a very good simple program to operate, a much better program, IMHO, is GSAK (Geocaching Swiss Army Knife). Check it out. Cheers.
  11. Aaaah. Don't you hate that when it happens. Just a minute or so after placing my last post I got to thinking seriously about GPilotS and that lead me to drag out the manual. I have been experimenting over the last few minutes. GPilotS DOES DO ALL I REQUIRE. Just returned here to post this and see that PDOP's has replied. Thanks PDOP's.
  12. Thank shanep for the reply. But maybe I didn't make myself clear. I am familiar with paperless caching and in fact do that with GSAK and my Palm. I also use GSAK to tranfer waypoints to my gpsr. What I seek to be able to do is reload my gpsr with another set of waypoints from a file of waypoints stored in my PDA. I have a mapping program from which I can upload waypoints to my gpsr. But when I have my cache waypoints from GSAK loaded I cannot upload all of the mapping mapping ones as well as the total is greater than 500. It would be great to be able to transfer both sets of waypoints in separate files to the PDA and then as and when desired once away from my home computer to swap the waypoints in and out of the PDA. I have a serial PDA to GPS cable which I use to download/upload tracklogs, using PDA program 'GPilotS', from/to my gpsr to/from my PDA. I would like to be able to use something similar, if it is availble, with waypoint transfers when away from home base. I am sure that I am not the first to desire this.
  13. Does anyone know how to store sets of waypoints in a PDA? What I am looking for is software which will enable me to store/transfer waypoint sets to and from my garmin 12XL and a Palm m105 PDA. The 12XL has a limit of 500 waypoints. I have more waypoints than this (in a number of sets) and would like to be able to change sets in the 12XL out in the field.
  14. Go see Paperless caching Cheers
  15. Hi elimmen, I have a m105 too. A good site to see is : Paperless caching Cheers
  16. Baloo&bd wrote Not if PayPal keeps rejecting your applications and gives no reason why!! PayPal is a total exercise in frustration. About 10 applications using different CCs = ZIP response. Emailing support about what the problem could be just brings up a request to phone them! Very expensive toll call to USA from here! I think I will give them a miss.
  17. What's the latest news, Jeremy? I need to join (need PQ's) and PayPal keeps fobbing me off. How I hate them for not giving me a reason why.
  18. Eagerly awaiting news so I can join and use my PDA.
  19. Yeah, I was confused initially too in the method of going paperless. For the good oil on how to do it go visit Paperless Geocaching

    Warning

I posted a reply to a topic yesterday and see that a warning has been placed on the post? What did I do wrong?
  22. Have PDA ready for paperless caching. Need .GPX urgently. PainPal has rejected my solicitations (again x 6) - dunno what the problem is as their web page gives no clues. When is credit card subscriptions method coming on line? I wanna join. I wanna join.
  23. Though I don't have TUMONZ there seem to be issues with GPS compatibility judging from forum notes I have read. Go check Software forum NZMapped is definitely GARMIN compatible (not sure of other makes).
  24. I use nzmapped (south Island only) and am very satisfied with it for geocaching/4WDing/MTBing/Tramping as I can print off maps of the areas I'm interested in visiting. But I'm afraid I couldn't justify the cost for a 2 week visit. To use nzmapped on your travels you would need to have a laptop with at least 4gigs of space to cover both islands. Much better to use your AA membership and visit the Automobile Association and get the free areas maps. They have tourist guides as well. If you want to know where all the geocaches (well most of them - the site is a little behind the times at the moment but I'm sure that will be rectified soon) then go visit http://www.nzcaches.tk/ and print out those maps before you come.
  25. I don't anything about Magellans, except that I was tempted a couple of years back to get a 315. After reading how good the GARMIN 12XL was under tree cover I bought one of those instead. Glad I did. It has NZMG and integrates very well with Polymedia's NZMapped for GPS. I only have the SI topomap CD's and am very happy with what I have.
