  1. I bought my eTrex Vista in college 5 years ago... I think it was the first week it was released. I love it. Since it was older I thought about upgrading and shopped around. Never saw anything that fit my needs as perfect as the Vista. Then within one month of deciding to keep my old unit, my 18 mont old bit the toggle button off and the video chip went out. Of course it's out of warranty so for $125. I sent it in to be repaired. But the best part is, Garmin replaced it with a new one. They have just made me a loyal and extremely satisfied customer.
  2. You should consider the possibility that the cache could be found accidentally. It would be a shame to discourage anyone from participating because of an offensive find. In every cache I have hidden, I have placed a notice explaining Geocaching for those who have accidentally found the cache. Though in 6 years I have only read 1 log entry by an accidental find. It is still a significant enough possibility. Muggles happen. Edit: An after thought - so a Playboy, Leatherman or even a pack of cigarettes? Who is going to supervise these types of containers and check for ID? Next thing you know you're contributing to the delinquency of a minor. And now from my Mommy soapbox.... illicit/harmfull items have no place in this family pastime. And it is not just kids I’m looking out for, but adults like myself. These things have no business being left lying around. A young kid does a search exclusively for Adult Only Caches and the next thing you know he/she has illicit/harmfull item under the mattress at home. I like geocaching.com as a safe site and not one that I would have put a parental block on.... off soapbox.
  3. Nifty! Using it on my HP Pocket PC with Wi-FI hotspot. THANKS! Much easier when camping and need quick lookup.
  4. My 2 cents: I've played with most of the mentioned software but I just bought the latest iPaq2495 and had a lot of bug problems with sonar. Try GPXView. It's simple but gives me everything I need without the hassle. I'm actually using it right now, waiting for that PQ email through Wi-Fi.

  6. You can open pocket queries in Google Earth. For Premium members run your pocket query like you would for unfound caches. The query file is emailed to you in .gpx format. In Google Earth go to File, Open. Select "File Type .gpx .loc" and open your saved query.
  7. Google Earth is actually really cool because it opens .gpx and .loc files!!! If you're a premium member you can built a query which includes only the caches you found (other limits include: cache type, container, rating, distance from origin, placed between a date range). When you submit the query you can select .gpx format. When you open Google Earth go to File, Open - then select file type .gpx from the drop down and navigate to your .gpx query you made. Google Earth also opens .loc files. You don't have to be a premium member to download these, but you're limited to the website's search function. Here's a screen shot from query build. I just read this in another topic which makes opening the files much easier.
  8. Well, you're no Ken Jennings. But a Cryptologic Technician? Maybe you can solve this one that has been driving me nuts for months! Matryoshka GCJA57 Can you say enigma? This is him RichAromas And he posted a comment in: "Geocacher On Jeopardy Tv Show" And this video clip: GeoJeopardy
  9. If you'd like to read the full text of this bill visit http://www.scstatehouse.net/sess116_2005-2006/bills/3777.htm I think that Geocaching has set fair rules for itself without going to such extremes as passing prosecutable laws. May I paraphrase: http://www.geocaching.com/about/guidelines.aspx#offlimit Off-limit (Physical) Caches By submitting a cache listing, you assure us that you have adequate permission to hide your cache in the selected location. Caches may be quickly archived if we see the following (which is not inclusive): Caches on land maintained by the U.S. National Park Service or U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (National Wildlife Refuges) Caches placed on archaeological or historical sites. In most cases these areas are highly sensitive to the extra traffic that would be caused by vehicles and humans. All local laws apply.
  10. Who was the player on Jeopardy? I guess I missed that mention.
  11. A catagory under "Memorials" for "Famous Graves" would be a nice addition. I already have several in mind. Thanks.
  12. Museums would be a great idea! Especially the ODD. Really wishing I had the coordinates for Utah's "Hole In The Rock". In my area we have a lot of drilling and oil locations. Have you seen the movie "Boomtown"? That's Burkburnett, Texas.
  13. I own a stack of Mapsource CD's that I use with my Garmin eTrex Vista. MetroGuide, Topo, Roads & Rec.... I've been tossing around the idea of buying a new GPS with more bells & whistles (which is a question in itself - another Garmin or try Magellan this time). Does anyone know if I can load Mapsource to a Magellan?
  14. My biggest problem is having 100's of waypoints in my GPS and rarely having any information about the cache when I happen to drive by it. I'm about to retire my big binder of paper printouts w/notes and go paperless! I have my trusty eTrex at my side through the transition. I bought a Palm IIIex off eBay to get my feet wet. I've been reading about Pocket Queries and how to get the data into the Palm. After downloading and testing several applications, I think I have finally decided on GSAK and Cachemate as my combo. Anyone know roughly how many caches I can load into this PDA that has 8mb? It will be a Geocaching tool with nothing else on it. Something else I stumbled across is the mention of connecting my PDA straight to my GPS? Why would I do this? Are there any advantages?
  15. My 3-ring binder continues to grow. I now have an archive binder. It's always fun to flip through the pages and review my notes from days gone by. Some pages are even wrinkled and ink run from my water jug leaking in my backpack.... ah the memories. I must agree. Not to mention it folds down much smaller than a PDA and weights a whole lot less! That would be the sheet of paper of course. Not the binder
  16. This is in memory of my geocaching partner and best friend, Tasha. We lost her in January to an unknown medical condition. Keep your stories and pictures coming! There is nothing greater than sharing your love of geocaching with your 4-legged friends.
  17. wow - can't believe I just saw Colfax, CA (I grew up in Grass Valley) Currently: TEXAS
  18. Bumping this topic back up - Hopefully, someone will have some answers and someone else will benefit.
  19. I missed the chance. I just saw your post and I'm at 34° 06' 36" N / 98° 31' 53" W Burkburnett, Texas right on the Red River. I also have logged this cache. I found my name in Canada! It took a while to wait for the roads to thaw out enough. And he got as close and possible. Turns out my name is in the middle of a pond! Great pictures of it!
  20. This is my favorite time of year! And I have 2 virtual caches specifically for this Mexican Holiday! In most localities November 1 is set aside for remembrance of deceased infants and children (All Saints Day), often referred to as angelitos (little angels). Those who have died as adults are honored November 2 (Day of the Dead). Here are a few Geocaches designed just for this day: Dallas: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=16381 Wichita Falls: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=16389 Hope you enjoy the day, no matter which part of Texas you visit.
  21. 1. Traditional Cache 2. Virtual Cache 3. Bench Mark I have found that bench marks aren't always accurate. More times than not, I have found myself hunting by description. Many times they are on private property or unacessible to the public. Then again, this IS N. Texas - pasture or mesquite. There are definitely more BM's than caches.
  22. Well, our name is pretty complicated. You see, we live in Texas. Our last name is Jackson. There are 2 of us. We are plural. The texasjacksons domain was taken, we incorporated the hyphen, texas-jacksons.
  23. I friend recently sent this link for me to check out. That's all I have to say about that. You can check it out for yourself! http://www.gpsdrawing.com
  24. Flew home to California and took Dad on his first cache hunt. We hiked along this steep trail around a lake for quite a while. When we finally reached our destination the area was so tree covered and lots of huge boulders that the GPS signal was bouncing everywhere. I set my backpack down on a bench and started climbing up the hill, down the hill around and around, through the poison oak, down by the water, up by the ridge. Dad was determined never to give up, but after about 2 hours I said, I give up. I went back to the trail and sat down on the bench. And what do you think was hidden under the bench with moss and rocks?
