I… called Garmin with no luck. The person I talked to agreed it was shortsighted and opened a ticket…

I did the same thing yesterday, and was optimistic about a solution coming soon, until I discovered you attempted the same approach 3-1/2 years ago. UGH.

Maybe if a number of us contacted Garmin Support at 800-800-1020 they might start making it a priority.

Quite right, Mineral2.  I guess Pablo doesn't believe you.

You made a false assumption: it's not that I don't believe Mineral2, I was simply referencing what the Garmin rep I spoke with said about involving Groundspeak. I was optimistic about a solution coming soon, until I discovered another cacher attempted the same approach 3-1/2 years ago (where you also commented). UGH.

There is no solution and complaining here may fall on deaf ears because it's Garmin that has to make the change, not Groundspeak. Right now the solution is to upload field notes the old fashioned way, or use a phone to make a draft log.

You're right, so I contacted Garmin support, and they are starting a support case that will entail involving Groundspeak to incorporate the ability to send logs as drafts. ??

  4. I am a long-time Garmin GPS user, and have been connecting my Garmin GPS units to my computer via cable to upload my drafts (previously “field notes”) for years, and am ready for a better way. The feature that sends your logs wirelessly and automatically from your GPS to your Geocaching account was a major reason for my upgrade from my trusty 64 to a 66ST.

I like my 66ST a lot, but I am very disappointed in how it sends those logs as posted logs rather than drafts. I would much rather the logs be sent wirelessly automatically as drafts, and not posted as the generic “Submitted via Garmin Geocaching live” post on each cache page.

Until and unless Garmin gives us the option to send our logs as drafts (like the mobile apps), rather than as posted logs on each geocache page, the value of this feature is essentially zero to geocachers like myself who prefer to QWERTY type a unique log for each find.

  5. This discussion appears to be about two distinct topics: uploading drafts via cable connection to a computer, and logs being sent automatically wirelessly as posted logs rather than drafts. The latter is of much more interest and value to me, as I have been connecting my Garmin GPS units to my computer to upload my drafts (previously “field notes”) for years, and am ready for a better way. I would much rather the logs be sent wirelessly automatically as drafts, and not posted as the generic “Submitted via Garmin Geocaching live” post.

  6. When Garmin bought DeLorme last year, I imagined and hoped for some interesting merging of features between my beloved Garmin 64s handheld receiver and the 2-way communication (via satellite, not cell towers) and rescue/recovery button of the DeLorme InReach products. I have read about the upcoming Garmin Inreach products, and found the product comparison chart.

I am interested… even excited for this new product line, but I think I will wait until some improvements and additional features are implemented/clarified:

    •
    • Battery type: "Rechargeable internal lithium ion" (Will it also take AA batteries?)
    • Memory/history: 2 GB (4 GB+ needed)
    • Accepts data cards: No (BIG negative there - gotta use my City Navigator maps!)
    • Custom POIs (ability to add additional points of interest): No (Another BIG negative)
    • Waypoints/favorites/locations: 500 (5000+ needed)
    • Routes: 20 (vs. 64's 200 - not a big deal, as I don't use this feature)
    • Track log: No (I need a "yes" here, along with the 64's 10,000 points, 200 saved tracks)
    • Geocaching-friendly: No (Obviously the biggest issue; needs a "Yes (Paperless)" before I'll buy it)
    • Custom maps compatible: No (gotta use my custom topo mapsl)

What are your impressions and ideas so far?

  7. In answer to Delta-S's question whether this was a Geocaching event: no, it wasn't an event listed on geocaching.com, but rather a competition element within the Wild Canyon Games mentioned above. We are hoping to hold an actual event cache out there at some time in the future, but nothing is set along those lines, to my knowledge.

I'm part of the Wild Canyon Games "Geocache Masters" team, and have placed and verified a number of the "geocaches" out there. I was out searching for the two lost competitors and was glassing for them on top of the tallest mountain on the property when the call came over the radio that they had been located.

  8. Yes it does. So do the Oregons, Dakotas, Colorados and many other units from other manufacturers.

I just got my 62s the other day, so please give me the quick & dirty on how you get it to do that. It's not simply a function of indicating a cache is "Found" in the GPS, is it?

  9. I was looking to get a gps unit so I can go geocahceing. Currently I use my Iphone, but I want something more reliable and more durable. I will also use it when I ride dirt bikes. I want one that is tough and can withstand abuse I will also use it to plot routes while riding and also use it to follow trails. So I would like one that can save quite a few points and . I don't really want a touch screen one because if I want to use it while I am riding I would have to take my gloves off every time to use. I was looking at the following three units: Garmin Rino 530HCX, Garmin 60CSX and the Garmin GPSMAP 62S. I like the idea of the radio feature of the rino, but I also like the other two units. Is the 62S worth the extra money for the updated features. Thanks for the info.

The leap from the Garmin 60CS to the 60CSx was well worth it, but the leap from there to my new 62s is at least 3X as cool. Go for the 62s and you will not regret it.

  10. You can use Field notes. Whenever you find one of the geocaches (while in geocache mode (use the geocaching dashboard)), you can: select geocache, log attempt, found it (or did not find it), find next closest.

When you get home, you can go to the geocaching website and see your field notes(I used the instructions for the Oregon/Colorado to do it).

Wait, your Garmin 62s sends Field Notes to your geocaching.com account? If so, I have yet to discover that feature…

  11. But there's nothing wrong with posting a "Need Archived" log if the cache indeed needs to be archived.
There is nothing wrong with posting a NA log.

I think a cacher who places a "Needs Archived" log should show courtesy with a private message to the cache owner first.
