  1. Please forgive my naivete, but since I'm relatively new to hiking in the woods, I want to make sure I can identify poison ivy. I think I came across it today while caching and the picture is below. I did some research on Google and discovered there are a lot of PI impostors. However, because of the "leaves of 3, let them be" mantra, I think I've correctly identified PI (and there was a LOT of it near the cache). Do I get an "A" on this one? Thanks for your replies...
  2. After playing around with the map some more, I figured out what the Identify button is. Still not getting the little red check marks....
  3. I'm a lefty and am glad of it because the Garmin eTrex Legend was made to be used with the left hand (at least that's what the user's manual says).
  4. No, I'm in Nixa MO 65714. Now I think it's working. However, I'm not seeing the little red checkboxes. Instead, each cache on the map is numbered, and underneath the map is the cache information for each number. Not what I was expecting, but I suppose it works.
  5. I am having the same problem. Just paid for the Premium Membership about half an hour ago...
  6. As a new geocacher, I've started to get really irritated at the DNF's I've come across, despite searching and combing the area as thoroughly as I can. Recently I had 4 DNF's in one afternoon, which really bummed me out. I went back a few days later and still could not find the same caches, plus 1 more. My question to the forums is how or when do you decide to give up searching? At what point do you say, "That's it, I've done the best I can. Either it's hidden too well or has been muggled. Let's move on to the next cache"? Do you give yourselves a time limit? Are there searching techniques that you use and have realized that they just aren't working this time? Thanks in advance for your responses!
  7. I am new to geocaching and my wife is behind my new hobby 100%. She will even go with me on caching trips (she drives, I navigate). However, our most recent geocaching experience together has soured her opinion of the sport somewhat. Despite drenching ourselves in bug repellent, we both received tick bites (mine on my back, hers in an area that I shouldn't mention here). So now, she says she will only go with me on caching trips to city parks only and no more woods!!!
  8. As someone else posted in an earlier reply, I use my GPSr as a cell phone. However, I've noticed that blocks the antenna and I keep losing the satellite signal, so I have to turn the display away from my ear and that usually solves the problem. I've even fooled fellow geocachers when talking to my GPSr! When I realize who they are, however, I go up and greet them.
  9. I also recently purchased "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Geocaching" from Amazon.com, and am enjoying it immensely. Also bought "Hide and Seek with your GPS" and "The Geocaching Handbook". I was wondering if anyone else knew of really good geocaching books, and do they all say the same thing? The "Idiot's" book I'm reading appears to have been written with the help of Groundspeak staff and is very thorough--I don't know what someone else could write about that hasn't already been covered in the "Idiot's" book.
  10. Ok, I'll bite. * Male * 33 * Married * 2 dogs * No kids but we are in the process of an international adoption (from Russia--hope to do some geocaching while I'm over there) * Technical Writer for a software company in Springfield, Missouri * Former junior high/high school English teacher * College degrees in English, Secondary Education and Computer Information Technology (and I use those degrees in my job every day!) * Slightly above average intelligence but have suspicions of being a slow learner (i.e., I'll get the job done better than most, but it'll take me a little bit longer to figure out what the heck it all means and how the heck I'm supposed to do it) * Been a Baptist all my life * Movie nut (I own over 1300). I love all kinds of movies (and yes, all the Indiana Jones movies too--I practically have them memorized). Don't have a favorite movie, but I believe some of the best ever made include: "The Wizard of Oz", "Citizen Kane", "Ben-Hur", "The Godfather", "Braveheart", "Schindler's List", "Platoon"...ok, I'll stop now... * Favorite band: U2 * I love gadgets and anything that requires a laser beam to use * Not exactly a computer techie geek but if necessary I can replace hard drives, CD-ROM drives, memory, video cards and firewire cards in my PC. Can also fumble through setting up a local network. * New favorite hobby/sport is geocaching (of course).
  11. I logged a DNF a couple days ago. Went back to the cache page and the cache owner had made the encrypted hint more specific. Guess I'll go look for it again.
  12. Ok, let's try this again...
