  1. GSAK is easy. But you should make sure that you keep it up to date or you will have caches on it that are deactivated or archived. It really sucks to walk 4 or 5 KMs to a cache just to find out when you get there that it was archived weeks ago.
  2. Go ahead and retrieve it and then contact the releaser to find out if they mind if you hold onto it until your NY trip. If they do mine then just drop it in another cache. If you don't think you will be finding another cache in the near future, like within two weeks, then you might want to leave it there and just DISCOVER it.
  3. prompt   /prɒmpt/ -er, -est, adjective 1. done, performed, delivered, etc., at once or without delay: a prompt reply. 2. ready in action; quick to act as occasion demands. 3. quick or alert: prompt to take offense. 4. punctual. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/prompt
  4. Ok. So your definition of Promptly is different than mine. I guess when I was in the Army and was told by my Sergeant to, "Move out promptly" he meant as soon as I could instead of immediately. I will always log a trackable that I retrieve on the day I take it or log it as dropped on the day I drop it. That way the releaser knows I have it and no seekers get disappointed that a listed trackable is not there. It is just common courtesy.
  5. I would delete the logs. They obviously don't understand the Earthcache concept.
  6. That is not cruel. Go for it. I have had caches that were right in front of my face almost have me in tears because I searched for hours without finidng it. Then suddenly I see it.
  7. I would like one if there are any left. Email sent.
  8. I like wooden nickels, poker chips, pennys with something smashed into them. Any kind of token really. The other day I found an Oppenheimer Taler which is a currency used in Oppenheim Germany to encourage locals to shop locally. I'll be keeping that one!
  9. GREAT THREAD!!! I have read through the instructions and have selected two pieces of birch from the woods behind my house. I am very excited about making some staffs and will be hard for me to wait for them to dry. I plan to dry them three - six months. There are a lot of birch sapplings near me that were pushed down by lunberjacks trying to get to other trees. My plan is to grab and strip one week so in about six months I should have quite a few good pieces to choose from to complete my first staff.
  10. Wow....I have never gotten a email from a trackable releaser asking me to move it along and I have held some of them for over a month looking for the right cache to put them in. The releaser should never contact the CO asking them to remove it from their cache. The releaser can mark it missing themselves. I have marked a few of mine missing when I am sure they are no longer in the cache. I completely agree with you that cache owners have no responsibility to check their caches for the trackables that someone else has released.
  11. Yup, it is a common problem. IMHO there is not much GS can do about it. The majority of my almost 200 trackables get logged so I don't think the problem is as big as some make it out to me. I also have trackables that hop hundreds of miles without being logged. Yesterday I got an email notice on one that it was missing and then later that day another cache logged that they had retrieved it. If trackables are missing from a cache I find I check the logbook to see if anyone has writen a note that took a TB or GC. Then I write them and ask if they logged it out of the cache. Sometimes they write back that they forgot to log it at retrieved.
  12. I know people are big on the whole "instant gratification" thing, but not everyone has access to the internet all the time, so they may not always be able to log a trackable the same day they pick it up. I do however think it is a good idea to log the retrieve before actually dropping the item off and to log the drop off as soon as practical. Then they should not retrieve the trackable, they should discover it. It is simple really.
  13. I seed da danged varmit!!!! 'bout near kilt me! Here is pruf! - http://coord.info/GC2GYM7
  14. Great!! So now we know that German mail outbound works.
  15. I second the RAM-MOUNT. I use them on my motorcycles, bicycles, and cars. Great quality and they make mounts for just about any mobile device. Also they are very versatile in that you can switch mounts, arms, and bases. Yes they cost a bit more but I have never had one break and never had a device fall out of one.
  16. Did you get the two coins I sent you last Wednesday? You should have. I have not recieved the one you sent out.
  17. Why? Garmin is the one GPSr that has many FREE third party maps of almost the entire world. Stop buying maps from Garmin and continue to love your Garmin. Velomaps.org and Openmtbmaps.org have most of Europe for free but you have to compile them yourself. Or for 20 Euro you can get all of Europe compiled.
  18. Very NICE!! I just ordered the Deep Sea version which is my first of thise series.
  19. I completely disagree that you should wait a week before grabbing a trackable that has not been logged as RETRIEVED. I find nothing confusing about logging trackables. IMHO if a person plans to pick up a trackable then they need to log it THAT DAY . If they know they will not be able to they should take the tracking code and DISCOVER it when they have time. When I find a trackable that is not logged into a cache I contact the cacher listed as holding it. I let them know that day I now have the trackable and politely ask them to log the trackable within 48 hours. If they don't, or they don't reply to me with a reason why they will not be able to log it in this amount time, I send them one more message to let them know that in 24 hours I will grab the trackable. If it gets to this point (and it never has) I dip it in the cache I found it in and then move it along.
  20. As far a inaccurate coordinates with a dedicated GPS goes I can see it happening depending on the age of the GPS. My new 62ST is crazy accurate and when I go to older caches, ones created with older GPSs, I often find the cache 5 to 10 meters off. This happens especially in highly wooded areas. I don't see a need to complain since though since I don't have the opinion that any cache need to be exactly spot on the list coordinates.
