  1. I've signed up. What a lovely idea. thanks for organising it.
  2. There's a few of us around in Crawley and I've heard that there's some fine caches around although I've yet to do many, most of mine are overseas. It would be great to have an event if possible. Although we're campers I don't know (or couldn't recommend) many camp sites around here. Who goes camping on their own doorstep . DrDick&Vick has given you the name of one I have heard good things about and you could try Honeybridge Park. Google says it is only 18 miles south of where you need to be (K2 sports centre?) and the roads should be fairly easy. Edit: Mentioned this to SWMBO and was reminded that I will be away that weekend learning how to drive safely after having come to the attention of Her Majesties' Constabulary. I was zapped doing 57mph in a controlled 50mph zone on the motorway, along with a few others I should imagine. It's a fair cop guv but annoying just the same.
  3. Something similar-ish has happened to me. I started caching in June whilst I was working in Louisville and have found 180 caches, all within a 50 mile radius of my hotel. The GeoC stats say this and the GSAK log on my laptop and Garmin agree. Since I came home I've set up GSAK on my home PC and set up a PQ to import the caches I have found, but it only returns 178 finds. I've not been through the list in detail to see what is missing but I suppose it could be that 2 caches have been archived. Anyone know anything else?
  4. Or " Unless you stop harassing me I'm going to call the police and you can explain your ridiculous accusations to them".
  5. Thanks MrsB, I had forgotten about all that stuff on the right hand side of the page.
  6. ..... visit every cache in the US .... That's one hell of a challenge, don't think I'll be around to see it completed
  7. As an aside, how does one go about checking a profile? I understand how to do it by clicking on a name in a post, but how do you do it if you only have a name, say from a log or an email address as in the OP? If I click on "members" at the top of the page it just goes to my profile.
  8. I have a few Google+ invites if anyone wants them, just PM me your email address. I've added those on this thread to my Geocaching circle and you can find me here if you want to
  9. I had an encounter with Poison Ivy whilst caching in the US. That resulted in a nasty rash (I still have it some 5 weeks later) and was more itchy than an itchy thing that's been sprayed with concentrated itching powder. Badly sprained my ankle on the same day as well, with a mile to walk back to the car. That still gives me gyp as well.
  10. Off topic I know, but that's a very nice photo
  11. I think Icenians meant that only 50 votes were cast in the election of the committee. If so it is hardly representative of UK caching as a whole. Not to say that it shouldn't be, the game probably needs an overall body to represent it to the public and authorities, whoever they may be.
  12. Hmmmm, seems a bit dodgy to me. Whilst the initial intentions may be good, who knows what you could pick up from one of these. It sees like an ideal way to spread viruses, trojans etc. Not even the best security software can be guaranteed to pick up everything, everytime. As your mum probably said, never pick up anything in the street, you never know what you might catch
  13. I had words with the Long Arm of the American Law last night who on the face of it appear to be more enlightened than their colleagues in Wetherby. I'm currently working in Louisville and was doing some late night caching at very large retail area just north of the town. It was about 0030 (I know I know, just one more cache) and I was to all intents and purposes skulking in the undergrowth examining lamp posts, bill boards, trees etc. Out of the corner of my eye I noticed a police car pull up, with another a little further away. Talking to the lady officer I learnt they had been attracted by the fact that my car was parked in an unusual place (off road but not a car park) and they had seen me lurking in the bushes. I explained that I was geocaching to which the reply was "oh, is that where you go around searching for small containers?". We had a short conversation after that but all was OK and they went on their way appeased. It does make you think about what you're doing with urban caches though, there are thousands out here, just do a search on zip code 40241. I spent most of the evening (and all night!) in that area, it was very quiet because it was after hours and the 4th July [1] is a holiday but I must have been seen quite a few times. One of the most popular hiding places in these areas is in the base of a lamp post, caches hidden in this way are very difficult to retrieve without making any noise. In this security concious society it might be difficult to explain that the small container you have just hidden is not a threat or even a dead letter drop. Of course my caching name is Shanghai Joe, must be a suspect then The most annoying part of this was that the cache turned out to be a DNF although I did go on to find a few more before giving up for the night. The alarm clock went off far too early this morning. [1] Independance day - I did consider asking for the back taxes but thought it might not go down to well
  14. Thanks for the replies so far. As far as I can see Garmin offer a 1 years worldwide warranty and I would have to return a failed unit to the Garmin service centre in Southampton. This link summarises most of the advice I have read on this. Any comments on the differences between the 450 and 62s. I'm hoping to buy a unit this week/early next week and get a few caches under my belt here in Louisville before returning to the UK. Once back in the UK I'll hopefully be able to team up with my diving buddy, Ratcliffe of this parish, for weekends of diving/cache hunting. Incidentally for those that don't know, the price difference between the US and UK is significant. I can buy an Oregon 450 here for £198 (US$325 from Amazon), the same unit from Amazon UK would be £272
  15. Hello from another geocaching newbie. I'm currently working in the US but will be returning to the UK in 6 weeks or so. While I'm here it seems to make sense to take advantage of the lower prices and buy a GPS over here. Are there any disadvantage to this, apart from the import duty. After reading several reviews, on here and in other places I'm thinking of an Oregon 450 or 62s. Am I right in thinking that the only significant difference between these two is that the 450 has a touch screen? What about updating maps for the UK etc., I assume that these can be updated via the SD slot. Several questions I know but I'm sure you guys have the answers.
