  1. 1 vote for number two. There would be little sense of community here if we weren't sharing our stories and experiences. These forums are secondary to the cache logs. However, not everyone cares about the sense of community. I can live with that too. rdw
  2. Several people have reported here that they were allowed to use them during flight. Ask the pilot when you board. rdw

Or do I just ignore it, and let my whole concept go to pot I know how you feel. My Don't Know Much About History cache has been a source of continuing headaches for me. People just can't seem to meet the three simple requirements. Maybe half of the people got everything right the first time. I have sent out dozens of emails trying to get people to comply with the rules. I email them if there is a problem. Most have either fixed the problem or emailed me to find a solution. A few have required a second email. One did not answer two emails or fix the problem in over two weeks, so I deleted the log. It's been a pain in the bum, but I like my idea enough that I will keep it going. I don't think I'll ever have another cache that requires so much maintenance. rdw

  5. The standard for approval should be whether the placement of the cache could damage the location. If the cache is buried in sand on a beach (but not on sensitive sand dune, etc), what is the problem with that? Or if it is set in the ground in a way that would not require digging op the surrounding area? Or maybe it was buried with the permission of the land manager? We should be very cautious about burying caches, but that does not mean that all buried caches should be immediately sdisapproved tdw
  6. The images are not actually avatars. Avatars are currently disabled. There are certainly some annoying signature images. I got tired of them so I downloaded the Proxomitron, which can be set to kill all animated GIFs. There are some annoyingly large graphics and long signatures, but I hardly notice them anymore. Unfortunately, there is not much that can be done about them. Unless people come to their senses and realize how annoying their sigs are. rdw
  7. One more vote for option #3. BassoonPilot has articulated my point of view better than I could. Any usable rating system would be so cumbersome that it would not be worth the trouble. Just read the logs. rdw
  8. quote:Originally posted by inceptor: They were talking about the ratings of the discussion boards. Part of the consensus was that (and I agree with this) some would like to see ratings on caches. This would help in deciding which to go after and which to aviod. inceptor the only difference between men and boys is the price of their toys I realize they were talking about the forum ratings and that you are talking about cache ratings. My point is that unless we all agree how to rate caches, other people's opinions do not matter much. rdw

  10. I know Jeremy Irish, but who is Jason Thomas? Take a look at the quick vote too. Most people who own GPSrs would geocache. rdw

  14. quote:Originally posted by TomF: So let me see if I understand correctly. In order to use the mapping function or to be able to upload specific maps to the unit I have to purchase the mapping software that costs over 100 dollars? Maybe I dont need that mapping feature after all. Tom The only maps that can be loaded into the GPS are made by the GPS makers. For Garmin, it is Mapsource maps. For Magellan, it is Mapsend maps. Both are expensive. Any current GPS can store hundreds of waypoints (most now hold 500) and most can be connected to computers. As previously suggested, you should look at Garmin's eTrex line. They are all small, waterproof, and have computer interface capabilities. The yellow eTrex is available for $100 or less, but does not come with the computer cable. The Venture is available for a little more and includes the cable. I used the Legend for nearly 6 months and never had any problems with it. Good luck with whatever you get. rdw
  15. I did a keyword search on "cranberry" and came up with three, but not the name you wanted. Then I looked through approximately a months worth of new Massachusetts caches and didn't see it there. It sounds archived. If you knew the waypoint you could look it up directly. Further looking: Checked Buxley's. It is not listed in the most recent caches for Mass. Checked the geocaching stats site. Bingo!! ID=372 (Not exactly new.) Temporarily deactivated. GC174 Ha ha. I rock. rdw

  17. The problem is that it is happening more frequently as of late. One would expect the situation to improve over time, but it seems to be doing the opposite. I have no doubt that many people are working hard on this behind the scenes, but it is very frustrating to be stuck on the other end. Losing a long-winded super-brilliant post to a system error sucks. rdw

  19. quote:Originally posted by LarsThorwald: I'm coming up on 50 caches now and there are two items I'd love to see on future cache pages that might make the NEXT fifty even more rewarding (for me and for others): First: could there be some indication of the distance to a cache? Not from my house, but from a likely starting point? I know that many times there's more than one way to get to the cache, various trailheads, etc... but I'm looking for a way to distinguish "hikes" from getting out of the car, gearing-up, and finding that the cache is only 300' from the parking lot. Maybe a refinement of the "difficulty" rating, or a designation/definition of "car cache?" Many cache placers, myself included, give a rough estimate of the distance to the cache on the cache page. Many more do not. Couldn't you just email the cache owner and ask? I have given approximate distances on a few of mine, but I can envision circumstances where the hider may not want to give this information. You could also get idea from the topo maps or aerial photos. The distance is a factor in the difficulty and terrain ratings, if the cache is rated correctly. quote:Second: how about a "cache rating" feature similar to that which has been instituted with the forums? Of course it would be subjective, as every cacher has a different idea of what is fun, challenging, etc... but it could be an easy way to tell if the search for the cache has been enjoyable for those going before you. This has been discussed repeatedly and a clear consensus has never been reached. Also, note that there is a current topic that indicates most people pay no attention to the topic ratings in the discussions. rdw
  20. Here I go again replying to my own posts, but... I just took advantage of a deal on Amazon that was not there a few days ago. I ordered the Motorola 6220 FRS in the graphite color. $50 minus a $15 mail in rebate. Through tomorrow March 31st, you can get the waterproof bag, a $22 value, for free with purchase of the graphite 6220. The only downside, the radio ships in 1-2 weeks. Overall, it seems to be a good deal. Radio + bag + shipping = ~$56. Minus the rebate is roughly $41. I wonder if Jeremy could get a kickback on this stuff through the link on the front page, or if he only gets it for GPS sales. Might be worth a try if you are interested. It's too late for me. rdw
  21. This may be a first. Did they move the box, bulldoze, backhoe, and then put it back in the hole? And yes, ammo cans are the best. rdw

  23. Put me down for choice 3. It would be nice to see them move more without help. Sigh. rdw
