The "feet to go" goes down, while walking in the opposite direction of the pointer. Is this normal for this unit? My Magellan 315 never does this. Will downloading the latest software fix this? Thanks! I have also had this happen. It seems to mostly happen when the batteries are getting low. 2. quote:Originally posted by bjorn: Well hello,I just created a new acct. today & am wondering who I have to contact or where to go to get started. I heard about this on npr and thought it was a great thing to do on the weekends or something. Any information you can pass on will be very helpful. Thanks! Anxious to get started!! UBBCode If you haven't done so, buy a GPS unit. There are plenty of discussion on here about various GPS receivers. Then search on this website for a geocache located near you. Start with a relativly easy first. Then go after another. Geocaching isn't so much a group activity, but some people will go out in small groups cache-hunting. Have fun! 3. quote:Originally posted by Jeremy Irish: We've created a separate "Locationless Cache" type. If you have a locationless cache, please move it into the new section. I'm moving the type so it will no longer come up on search results pages by location. The locationless caches (well at least one that I know of) are still showing up when I do I search by distance from my zip code. I thought from the above statement, that this would not be the case. 6. quote:Originally posted by mtn-man: Ramness, I elected not to do that with my "Briefcase Full of Blues" Yeah, I found an freeway operpass that was located in the corner of a local park, that crossed the erie canal, and had in idea to place a cache there, but after consideration, decided it was not the wisest idea. I hadn't thought about a tag that will send them to the next spot. That might not be a bad idea. I will think about it. 7. I owned both units. I used the etrex exclusively as the Mag 315 was pretty much unusuable with the higher auto-averaging speed. Magellan now has a patch that will lower the speed that auto-averaging kicks in, and makes it friendlier to use for geocaching. You will have to buy a cable in order to install it, and a cable for a 315 is about $30+shipping. On the other hand, I used the etrex to hunt over 70 caches, and I thought it was a great little unit. Also a cable for the etrex can be gotten on ebay for about $10 plus shipping. I believe the Mag 315 has a better antenna than the etrex. The Mag 315 uses batteries faster than the etrex. I think the etrex is a little friendlier to use. One thing that bugged me about the Mag 315 (also on my Map 330) is that the strap attaches to the little screw that holds the back on. This is kind of awkward. I like how the etrex strap attaches to the bottom, and can comfortably be hung around your neck. I don't use the strap on the magellans. So between the etrex and the 315, I recommend the etrex. I have thought about doing a multipart geocache in a national park with the final cachebox outside the park. The thought of rangers running around the park following the clues, and deterimned to remove the cache from their park, only to get to the end and find out it is not in their park gives me a chuckle. 10. It's not obsolete yet! I used mine to find over 70 caches. If you watch over on ebay, you can pick up a cable for about $15 including shipping. The cable is worth getting! First you can download the newest firmware which has some new features. One I liked was being able to see the unit lock onto satelites. You will be able download geocache info via easygps which is helpfull in preventing the misentering of coords. 11. I have had one guy find one of my caches using a compass, and a map. And heard of another family hunting caches using topographical maps (though they found a cache, it was not the one they were looking for, which was about 1/2 mile away). It would be quite a bit harder, but it is possible. 14. Before i paint the tupperware containers, I will rough them up with coarse sandpaper to remove the smooth surface. I figure it will improve the paint bond. I don't use a pattern, usually start with a coat of olive drab, then, I paint on some random strokes of flat black, and reddish brown autoprimer. I will paint on geocache markings with a stencil in hunter green. This is my standard camo, but I have painted other containers in other color combos to match other environments. 16. If you place it, they will come. Geocaching is a VERY new sport. The first cache was only placed in May, 2000. Now there are caches in 121 countries! People are joining the sport every day, and as they run out of caches in their area, they start going farher out. People are even doing them while they are travelling on vacation. Don't worry, they will come!
  17. If the cache was in a geosynchonous orbit, you could just use a regular lat/lon, and maybe as an encoded clue give the altitude. Would that be considered a 5/5 difficulty due to needing special equipment?
  18. A Garmin etrex would probably work for you. I used to run Delorme Street Atlas on my laptop, and later ran Solus on my Palm IIIc, both hooked up to an Earthmate. The Earthmate had trouble keep satelite lock under trees, or around buildings. The etrex I used to have, kept a much better lock under the same conditions. I also used it to find my first 70+ caches. You can find it on sale new for around $100.00, but you might find it cheaper on ebay, or some other places online.

Matthew Buker FRAGILE? Excuse while I laugh. The Rockies, and the deserts will be here LONG after we are dead. If you think that even thousands of people boots are enough to destroy a mountain range, you got a screw loose.
