My boss is looking at purchasing some iPaq rx5900 travel companion PDA's for our field staff, and has asked my opinion. I don't know much about them. Does anyone have experience with this unit and /or Tom Tom software?
-
I have used one for a year and have nothing but good things to say about it.

Can any of you tell me why you might prefer the Garmin 60 CSx to of the Vista Cx and vice versa? I have to make a business case to my boss re. purchasing a number of GPSr's and need ammunition. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

That's like asking someone what kind of car is the best...

It is a very good unit- my son uses one, although I would be inclined to go for the newer Legend Cx, which has a color screen and a better antenna. It doesn't cost much more. May people start out with a basic model and then upgrade later on. Buy the best you can afford now. You can buy maps later if you decide you want them.

I now have four:
An ancient Magellan 3000
Garmin Vista
Garmin GPSMap60CSx
Garmin Forerunner205
-
Its very heavy.
And damned frustrating to work with. We still have some at work and they can't compete with the newer units.

I have had my RAM mount for about six months. When I got it I found it difficult to get the GPS in and out, so filed it down some, as mentioned above. It is made of very durable nylon, or whatever, and it would have taken forever to "wear" in. It works great. No probs. here. You just have to be careful not to remove too much material.

The rubber on my Vista came loose the same way. It is VERY common. I tried different glues, and finally found that Loctite Xtreme does the trick. It doesn't melt the rubber and can be removed if need be.
Can you help with this product... a stock # or something? I've searched high and low for a product called "Loctite Xtreme" and can't seem to find it. The rubber band on my VistaCx is bothering me...
The part no. on the tube I have is 06875. Here is a link:

It seems that when it comes to the electronic compass those that love it love it a lot, and those that hate it go the other way. I use mine ALL the time and find it works great for me. I don't see what the problem is???

I'm not familiar with the Rino but when I had a problem with the rubber on my e-trex the only glue I could find that would hold was loctite extreme. The others I tried wouldn't stick to the rubber, which seems to be silicone impregnated. The loctite didn't damage the rubber and I can still take it apart again if I want to. I'm not sure that would be the case with super glue.

I like the looks of the Sharkskin case but have never seen one. I use the Garmin model and mostly like it. The only problem I sometimes have is using the buttons through the plastic window, but one gets used to it.

My father had one that he used for a bit while geocaching, hunting etc. He has since graduated to a Venture
-
Most of the time I use only my CSx with the cache waypoint and the hint in the comments. Too simple.
-
Attach a TB tag with the goal: "Going from cache to cache, looking for someone to fix me and then send it to my owner".
Now there's an idea!
-
I sometimes use Mapsource to load waypoints into my GPS (60CSx) and it will load the hints (providing I have typed them in) It is much easier than directly entering them into the GPs if you have several to do. I don't carry any paper, just the waqypoint and the hint in my receiver, so I guess I am paperless without a PDA.

"I am new to all this....but could someone please explain what is 1:100,000 and 1:24,000 terms mean? I am lost...i don't know much about it"
1:100,000/1:24,000/1:12500 etc. are Representative Factors or R.F.'s and should not be confused with map scales. For example, they mean that:
one inch on the map equals 100, 000 inches on the ground
one mile on the map equals 100,000 miles on the ground
one popsicle stick on the map equals 1000,000 popsicle sticks on the ground
etc.
For example: 1:12,500 would mean that:
1 cm on the map equals 12,500 cm on the ground. It can then be converted to a scale of 1 cm on the map equals 125 metres on the ground (1 cm =125 m)

That's what I do too. Just delete what you don't want to send. Too easy.
-
How do I say this - I HATE THEM! I was going to a cache today, only to find it was in someones back yard with someone mowing the front yard. I kept right on going.
-
I don't know anything about the Explorist, but the legend would be a good choice. My son got one when he was 13 and likes it great. Kids aren't long figuring them out, especially if they are used to video games and controllers. I still can't figure the darned things out.
-
I can't resist asking- why you want to do such a thing?
-
I have had units with and without the electronic compass. For me WITH is the way to go.

Here is the link for the manual on the Magellan site:

Good luck!
