An in-site message center was definitely needed. Hopefully in the future when it's on the apps, it'll help with contacting unvalidated users.
I guess it will rather demotivate owners of Earthcaches and virtuals and more complicated caches in general. It's inacceptable for me to have to log in to gc.com and to deal with the slowless of the site while the old system allowed me to receive all mails by cachers on my e-mail account and not somewhere inside gc.com.
Note that the notifications do not contain the messages!
Again it seems just to be a gimmick for smartphone users (the questions in the survey confirmed that impression).
Moreover I just realized that messages can only be 1000 characters - inacceptable for more complex caches and not a reasonable choice to replace the old system.
