  1. usually taking a pix "view from the cache" is my way of showing what was special, of interest,or unique to the area,

without giving away the actual location of the hide...most caches are a fun adventure i want to remember with a photo...

  2. and this means that this post telling you to find me on Facebook as SuchaNana Geocacher or NWOhio GeoFan will probably also be whisked off by a reviewer soon :drama: ...as it should be, in accordance with the rules and regs as posted...it's those little words and phrases that lawyers, etc love to find and prosecute over...

  3. just found this out from our local reviewer on my latest cache hides published that i could not even reference our

geocaching groups-NWOGEO- facebook address link - was in direct violation of the "no" social agenda...since i had already

added those links previously on my cache find logs, oops-gotta change those logs now to keep the smilies...

  4. The Weekly Newsletter is useless in its current format.

We only get notification of Local Events for the next 4 or 5 days, which is no help in planning caching trips, and means some local events don't get shown at all.

The sooner Groundspeak reverts to the old style newsletter, with events for 3 months in advance, the better.

Every communication with Paige at Groundspeak, ends with "Put it on the Forum", which is typical Groundspeak ducking the issue !!

If they can put Mega events on for a year in advance, it shouldn't be too much trouble to do events local (within 100miles) to our home coordinates.

kudos - couldn't agree more...newsletter for the events last week was useless...read my lips Groundspeak - useless...

geez, do ya think Groundspeak even uses their own newsletter as an example to test their silly ideas? naw, they throw it out to the rest of us to do their quality control survey...

well, the results are in - failure to comply with NwOhio geocaching standards here...

  5. >As long as you aren't wrecking it for other people I don't typically care what you do.

the issue is : if too many people cheat too much, it gets the standard,

and no one thinks it is cool or funny to play fair anymore,

and no one expect anyone to play fair by the rules.

    ditto - well said...

  6. i am one of 26 views, and since i don't own a smartphone, and instead cache with and old-fashioned handheld garmin e-trex, i didn't think it was necessary to answer "duh, i dunno"...however, since you want to hear from me >>>>>>>>>>>>> duh, i dunno, can't help ya dude... :P

the grandson's gonna love this post i made !

  7. kudos for your newest cache-to-be...

a suggestion perhaps for a hiking hide - while still using the smartphone for coordinates, please do try and get three

different readings around the hide site for reference...also, you may want to try loading them into google or bing maps

first, to see where they show up on the map actually is as close as you think they should be where you placed it...that will

help get those coords closer to the actual GZ - ground zero - since you're using the phone, and please the ftf'ers who will be racing to find it...

  8. northerndm, in my opinion - just say nothing containing a hint - let the next cachers experience searching for the hide on their own terms - don't take the fun out of their game...

no bursting balloons with hints falling out like candy from a pinata ...oooh, wait a minute, that could be unique cache container...

let me know when you'll be publishing your first cache hide, i'll be glad to c'mon over and write up some great hints logs to post on your page, giving away the location... walk in the CO's shoes, then we'll talk hints and spoilers...

  9. i came, i tried, the excuses are all plausible, the reasons are subjective - and then i post the dnf for that trip... <_<

hopefully the next trip will yield a cache find, but at least i conveyed my attempt to the cache owner with my explanations...

i prefer to know about my caches' viability and figure i practice what i desire...

  10. my tagline says it all -geocaching ROCKS and is very seldom dull...Life is still an adventure...

i'm so glad geocaching led me to: Maumee River Alvar

special road trip with geo-friends made Wapakoneta known now for something other than Neil Armstrong's hometown Mocopulence

but then, this gem still stands out as the best of the basics: Power Lady take a short hike, find a cache among some back-to-nature ruins, all the while basking in the warm sun, with balmy breezes and Lake Erie just steps away...alone in a busy world for a moment of blissful joy...

thanks to the CO in 2001 for this cache treasure & thanks to all the cachers who place these treasure hides for those of us who follow... B)

  11. OK, I desparately want to hide a Geocache, but before I spend ANY money on a container that's going to be open to the elements, I want to make sure that there are no household items that could be used. What should I use? Any size is OK. :)

P.S.~ I was considering using a fairly large plastic pretzel container... would that be a bad idea since it's plastic???

Pill bottle, Tupperware tube, LnL, PB Jar, Ammo Can, Bison Tube, Medicine Bottle, Gladware, Altoids Tin anything, as long as it is watertight and it lasts long. :)

I don't recommend EVER using a food container (including drink mixes, coffe cans, spice jars, etc.) since they tend to atract bugs and other critters, but if you do be sure to wash it thoroughly and bleach the inside to try to remove as much of the food smell as possible. Remember, most critters can smell things we can't.

after cleaning plastic & metal coffee cans in the aforementioned ways, i also spray the inside with bug/mosquito spray, put the lid back on for a few days, then open up and camo paint inside and out...of course, using a heavy duty freezer bag inside to keep log & swag dry...this has cut down to zilch the # of bugs inside and i can have an inexpensive regular container for my in-the-city urban hides that thwart the efforts of critters small and large... B)

  12. Virtuals (sort of) are easy. Ever hear about an multi/offset cache? Take folks to the spot you want them to see..... Have them calculate co-ords from a sign, or something that will lead them to the cache. There are very few places you can't do this with.

have done this a number of times with success... just trying to keep the multi within a 2 mile radius is my challenge with the setup, but still the trip overall makes for an interesting cache hunt for the seekers...aka virtual version 2013 ;)

  13. I'm a fan of mechanical connections (nuts and bolts, screws, rivets, etc.). Then use an adhesive caulk to seal the joint against moisture.

Another approach is to design the camouflage so that it contains the cache container, and the cache container can be removed from the camouflage and then replaced after the log is signed.

timely Q & A...a bit stumped of late putting together my latest cache idea and voila-now i can proceed-thanks for the input

  14. aaaarrgghhh J-Dawg the Pirate, der mite b a few less smileys doon it yur way, but long as it's still fun...matey, methinks when yur cachin' in my neck-of-woods, i 'preeesh-ee-ate it to see yur mark on the log... B)

btw- my logsheets are write-when-wet paper and they dry quickly just waving 'em in the air for a few seconds...

  15. a few more questions - did you both discover this tb in a cache, at an event or in the possession of another cacher?

who has the tb now and will be moving it on? that's the person who logs it as retrieved and the other person logs it as discovered... you both need to get and use the tracking number from the bug...

methinks this link will help you...travelbug 411

  16. Parking? Do I let the availability of parking affect my placement of a cache?

No...place your cache, choose some of the aforementioned great suggestions to alert the searchers with that info...i'll read those waypoints and attributes

to decide where to park and approach the cache hide area with my walker, oxygen tank and walking stick -- or not...

do what you do best - hide a great cache and inform us well, that's all we ask of each other...

  17. 'tis a shame sometimes to see an old classic get archived... our NW Ohio group NWOGEOkeeps a thread open for owners to give substantial notice when they plan to archive... also, we have an active group of cachers keeping their fingers on the pulse of those caches perhaps no longer served by their CO's, so that steps can be taken within the guidelines to keep it going...

  18. for the kidzzz - choose caches that are traditional, in a park or on a trail, and are regular or larger size, making it

easier for them to find... i suggest cemetery caches, where small and regulars are hidden - in this quieter place,

teach them the detective nuances of the search, using principles of decency & respect... happy caching...

  19. RIclimber, some newbie & phone cachers have no idea of standards/rules/visibility/permissions...c'mon, they're just so excited to play and put out a new cache themselves, because they can...and what they do impacts us all...

sounds like reviewers are at least trying something to help communicate to them -if you, the "good" cacher, can't embrace some of their changes, perhaps send them creative suggestions - and reaching out to those who are disregarding the "standards" with positive input may go a longer way to acceptance...

  20. I have to chuckle at the potential irony of a cacher doing a bit of CITO and throwing a piece of trash out only for it to transpire it was the cache.

chuckling myself -you nailed it  ... the day we start to take ourselves too seriously in the name of fun, well...
