  1. I'm trying to find out a little bit about the history of caching in Wales, and what are/were the fist Welsh caches of each type.

    The oldest Trad was/is "First in Wales" but after that I'm stuck, only having cached since 2007.

    To that end, I was wondering if anyoneknows which were/are the first Virtual, Multi, Letterbox, Event and Webcam and Earth caches that were placed in Wales?

    So far the best candidates are;

    Traditional:GC2BA "The First in Wales" 17 February 2001

    Multi: GC4664 "Lord Hereford's Knob" 28 March 2002.

    Virtual: GC50DD "The Glory of Steam" 24 April 2002.

    Webcam: GCGA1V "* Cardiff Live! * (webcam cache)" 17 June 2003.

    Letterbox: GCJBY5 "Cadair Idris / Chair of Idris" 3 May 2004.

    Puzzle: GCJV0A "Denbigh Delights #1" 27 June 2004.

    Earthcache: GCND09 "Dee Bore Earthcache" 8 April 2005.

    Event: GCJ696 "Forestry Shepherds " 29 May 2004.

    Cheers,

    Mike

    Edited to add many thanks to Pharisee for the update!

    Here's an oddball Welsh & Worlds First ( possibly)

    GCIATEA Witch one? Mystery Letterbox Hybrid Night Cache 04/01/2008 :D

  2. Don’t panic....it’s not a new classification of cache size! ;)

    We all have our favourite side interests while caching....wildlife, flowers, exercising the dog, photography etc.

    You may have seen an item on BBC The One Show which featured a basic camera made from an aluminium drinks can...the pinhole acts as the lens.....which produced an amazing abstract photo (of Christine) :D

    Check out PINHOLE photography and cameras on the net...loads of info available.

    There’s even an eco warrior out there who will convert your drinks can, develop the picture an even recycle your can for free....with your photos featuring on the web.

    Perhaps the concept could even be incorporated into a CITO event?

  3. Just a note of interest....the first Welsh Ospreys appeared back in 2004 and has attracted some 180,000 visitors.

    O.K....here are the best options to view the Dyfi Ospreys.

    1. To watch the Ospreys fishing ramble in to the Dyfi from the village of Pennal or Cwrt.

    2. Take the train to Dyfi Junction....the birds are viewed from the north end of the station platform.

    3. Visit the hide at the Cors Dyfi Wildlife Reserve... web cam & CCTV should be up and running soon.

    4. Just...visible with scope from the RSPB hide at Ynys Hir.

  4. <p><font size="3"> Before the advent of geocaching in he UK ... and the banning of blood sports...this story relates to our then interest in the sport of  letterboxing.</font>

    </p>

    <p><font size="3"> Not a single soul had we seen all day, having just finishing our lunch, sitting on a boundary hedge of a remote ruined farmstead high up in the hills of Exmoor, on a perfectly calm and peaceful day. taking in the beauty of the moorland ....<strong>when suddenly all hell let loose!</strong>...                                                                                                     From literally nowhere...a highly charged Stag deer, clearly in great distress was bearing down on us at full speed!.....had we not taken avoiding action we would almost certainly have been bowled over .... the Stag missing us by inches... I still recall the rush of air past us as it went crashing through the heather and gorse beyond in full flight! ....if that wasn't surreal enough...after dusting ourself's down, a small group of hounds appeared followed some minutes later by the Master of the Hunt in a state of some embarrassment as he had lost his quarry ....and had we seen it?.... not that we told him you understand.... but no fooling the hounds as they picked up on the scent .         The rest of the hound pack were called up ,and with (<em>I kid you not</em>) some 200 horses...... with a blast on the post horn they were off on the chase! .... within seconds we were again left in complete peace and solitude. This just had to be our most surreal....and scariest moment out on the hills.</font>

    </p>

    <p><font size="3"> Later in the day we were made aware of the out come of the hunt ...I'll spare you the details!</font>

  5. For those familiar with the game of Letterboxing you will know that it is a parallel game to geocaching but traditionally played with map and compass and clues passed by 'word of mouth'.

    Having been a letterboxer for many years I am currently considering a crossover into geocaching using the unique rubber stamps in place of the cache (image and word art in rubber)

    I understand that in the US. where stamps are used in geocaching they are known as hybrids. but as yet the concept new to UK geocaching!

    Being mistaken for a regular cache, my only concern would be that the stamps would get carried off! in the take something leave something rule.

    Would the idea work?

    Or more importantly is the concept acceptable to you in geocaching?

    I would welcome your comments, please give me some feedback!
