  1. Unfortunately, at this time the answer is "No". The archived caches will not be shown on the map for Premium or any other members. I know in '08 I said the feature would return and at the time I was being sincere. The implementation was postponed in favor of other priorities until very recently when the idea was discussed again internally. It was decided that the liability is more than Groundspeak is willing to stomach. When a land manager is told that a cache will be archived and unavailable for good (which happens frequently, although not often very publicly) we have to be able to back up our promise. Some of you may think it's not a big deal but as a business it can be. We open ourselves up to litigation by doing otherwise. I recognize the need by geocachers to occasionally know if a location is "safe" by inquiring of past cache history, so volunteer reviewers will continue to be able to help you with this. If you need information about archived caches you can come to them or write to contact@geocaching.com. It could be that we find some way around this dilemma in the future and archived caches will be available again. Until that day I'm sincerely sorry we won't be able to provide this feature.
  2. Couldn't you just set up multiple 1 year memberships under the same account?
  3. That assumes the yearly rate stays the same for the next 30 years doesn't it? Besides being paid for life I think some places that have lifetime membership also put you on a list, or give you a special gift.
  4. Only easier if the hider adds that attribute But hey its like so many attributes, I either don't know when they should apply or just never bother to use them so why not. Yeah
  5. But if you could view it and not edit it, then that would serve the purpose and no one could do that. Just grey out the button! You can. Firefox hit ctrl-u. If your stuck with IE, Page > View Source. The OP already has to do just that and this is currently the only way to get the information. But sifting through the tons of lines of site code just to find "LongDescription" is a bit of a pain. There isn't a desire to edit the archived cache page. Just looking for a cleaner way to view the cache page contents such as would be found on the cache edit page. create a bogus listing, disable it and and leave it that way so its never published. Dump all your 'gonna reuse this later' stuff in that descrption. Some use these 'test page' for working on/building html etc then copying it back into a real cache page.
  6. If someones going to pick up a cache not return it to an active owner that would be stealing yes. But people that would do that could probably just as easily go rip off a bunch of active caches too. "easily accessed"? Surely seeing archived isn't going to be a default setting. It sure wasn't when this feature used to be available. Make it an extra checkbox or something that someone is not going to flip unless they're looking for something, you know, like it used to be. I never did understand why that feature was removed
  7. If someone meations a cache that used to be around a certain place it would be easier to zoom and pan the map than try searching threw hundreds of logs, or waiting for an email reply. Its also good for researching problems of previous locations. And of course, its just interesting to look at. I'm always amused when a new cache is placed near the archived location of an old one. Often without the owner of the new cache ever knowing there used to be caches there .
  8. That seems on the long side... Try sending another one, or changing your email to something else then changing it back. Either way it should trigger another validation message to go out.
  9. Maybe they didn't have a pen at all, and they couldn't find one in the cache so they 'forgot'.
  10. Actually, they are entitled to and are within their rights doing so. The question is should they and the simple answer is no they should not. That said, liars caches are fun. I know it was said as a joke, however even suggesting it be listed on the description that it is a liars cache is absurd. They did give instructions in the cache. Why not just go along with the fun? Otherwise just post a found it with nothing more. According to the change in guidelines, they are not allowed to delete the find... ...based solely on optional tasks.
  11. Just because its on ebay doesn't mean its a good idea. The seller is looking for a person somewhere some place that thinks its good and is willing to pay money. That's not you or me, but those things keep getting listed so someone is buying them.
  12. ??? Maybe I misunderstand but a 40 degree slope really doesn't sound that bad to me. What exactly would prevent you from pushing (or even riding) a bike up it?? Do you have a photo? Thats a rather subjective set of criteria, what one person can push a bike up may be diffrent for someone else who is less fit or has a medical condition. And what one person considers light overgrowth, might be 'pretty overgrown' or 'heavy' for other people. Of course there is also the last line for rating the trail "How is the the most difficult part of the cache? If the cache is within a few feet of a trail, don't worry about the last few feet." Would people take this to mean not to the include the last say 5 feet? or last 50 feet?
  13. How would caches be filed that fit into more than one catagory? needle in the haystack, after a long hike ammo can in the woods, at a vista and so on....
  14. You want a rule forcing people to go set up things on 3rd party websites?
  15. Many things that happen are keyed to a certain type of log. The insta notice is set off by a publish log, a log type which is posted by reviwers so they're the ones meantioned in the message.
  16. Thats probably because the X is not always at the same angle. If you want to see more gx examples, etc see: http://bytethebullet.com/geologo/
  17. Only when a patent or copyright is not there to protect the product/idea.......... If you compare the old L&L with the newer sterlite clones, the old ones have a sort of slot in the tab so it can pass over a sort of stud and still have the end of the tab grab the container rim. The clones have no stud, they just simply snap down and grip the rim. perhaps this is different enough to avoid any patents? I take that back. I noticed some clones at the Dollar General that are branded 'farberware' that seemed to be made exactly like L&L. Hollow square gasket, that seals on top of the rim. And slotted tabs that lock on/over tabs made into the side of the base. Too bad they seem to be made more rigid plastic (or maybe they just have horrible quality control). Of the ones on the shelf I seen, about half had visibly warp tabs. so much so that they either wouldn't lock down, or would quickly unsnap on their own Also found a grocery store that has a few sets of L&L . oddly this store is part of a chain and others in the chain don't have L&L anymore.... Maybe its old stock???
  18. Per your directions, I'm currently at 16.3% I don't know if I agree with your statement thats stats show how dedicated they area. Yea ok, some people are totally nuts and need to do anything and everything remotely geo-related. But I think there are some people that do all the stats junks as some sort of chest thumping gloating ritual. I'm amused rather than impressed when they have lists of FTF, STF, most caches in a day, least time between XX finds, etc but have not a single meation of what their favorite cache (or hardest cache?).
  19. I don't know for sure, but my guess would be that the OPs reason is similar to mine: I like to have a good selection of caches loaded in my GPS whenever I go somewhere. Sometimes I go various places with short notice, and therefore like to have the data all available already in my GPS, or else just a sync to my PC away. Additionally, I have helped maintain a "Lonliest caches" list for my state. Both of these would be good reasons, IMHO. Maybe TPTB hope you'll buy a cellphone app, or a just get an airtime card for your laptop and check out caches 'live'?
  20. To me it sounds like you were emailed by an antsy TB/coin owner. Most owners of the TBs you move you will never hear from. A few will thank you and anyone else that moves their stuff. On the other end of the spectrum a few will complain about anything you do... If your logging them in/out correctly just continue doing what your doing and don't worry about the infrequent 'weird' email.

The clones have no stud, they just simply snap down and grip the rim. perhpas this is different enough to avoid any parents? Can I ask how many ammo cans around you? Two or three years ago they were the about the same here, but the price of cans have doubled or more, while the price of lock and lock has stayed pretty much the same (assuming you can find them). Additionally, I haven't seen any ammo cans at flea markets, garages sales, and the farm/fleet stores that seemed to have them from time to time haven't had in more than years. For some reason I used to think LnL was imported from china to either UK or Canada before in turn being imported to the US. I always wondered why. But Looking at some of the linkspeople have post I could be completely wrong about that.
  22. Good luck to you crazy peoples!
  23. I was at a cache recently and had a home owner come out and question me at the cache location. He told me the thing was on his property and his wife was scared of people sneaking around their home. I moved the cache off the property and notified the cache owner. What does the CO do? Moved it back! I like what the Ebay seller said here: "And where are the Pigeons? Geocaching charges you $7 for some dog tags with random codes. If they were trying to do this for the fun of all they could offer the codes free and you could use your Sharpie... who is playing who here. Eye for Eye, threat for threat. Be careful. I will also remind you that the Geocaching service itself is very fragile. You do not want to awake the wrong Dragon here and ruin it for all. A decent website with a member every 100 square miles could mean a dead end for all cache hunts. Then what do you think would happen to the profit of the site? This is very possible. Who would play if 3 out of 4 caches were missing. " He is so right in when he mentioned an organized pirate site that could wipe out the game. Perhaps that is why GS sells TB's at such a high price - get it while you can ???!??!? I would not provoke this person. I almost think it would be fun to join the pirate side, so it really could happen. The whole model of GS making money off this game just cries for it to happen some day. This should have been left as a community game from day one - not a corporation. That just has a stink to it. Stealing caches to spite the company Groundspeak is like blowing up mail boxes because your mad at the governement. Mostly it just hurts the people who probably have the least amount of impact. As for geocaching being fragile, I would disagree. There are many sites that list geocaches, and even more sites for local groups, personal pages and blogs, and so on. If Groundspeak went belly up tommorrow that would be a hard blow, but not the end of geocaching the sport.
  24. "If the cache page could be made where both the host language and english had to be listed it would be great. " I like this idea, since it would mean that all these geeks that keep making puzzles with barcodes and computer code gibberish will have to be translated into english On a more serious side... have you considered trying to find a geocacher local to you that knows both german and english? Maybe you can exchange beer for translations.... suggest you make them translate before they get the beer!
