  1. I have a Mac, but not the nuvi. So can't help with your problem, but don't download Safari 4. I can no longer download waypoints from the web to my map 60CSX. I had to download Firefox. I haven't figured out how to uninstall 4 yet

That has been discussed quite a bit on the macmap list on yahoo and the solution for most people is to delete a plugin named flip4mac.webplugin

  2. Changes made from version 2.0.0.7 to 2.0.0.9:

    http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=4449

    * Improved speed of track/route drawing in 2D

    * Made 2D/3D view's styles match

    * Changed default route symbol to black dot

    * Added ability to run BaseCamp using an included basemap

    * Added status text for count of selected waypoints, routes, and tracks

    * Added ability to import geotagged photos from devices

    * Added category information to the find results dialog

    * Added track direction arrows

    * Added 3D rendering quality preferences to Display tab of the preferences menu

    * Added the ability to publish photos to Picasa Web Albums

    * Added Forerunner 405 support

    * Fixed issues with non-English pathnames

    * Fixed default colored tracks being exported as white

    * Fixed an issue where a waypoint could move slightly after its first edit

  3. As one of the early adopters, I did have the annoying (and battery killing) beep on shutdown. After reinstalling the firmware and trying a different microSD card it appeared that the problem had gone away, but all that had happened was that the beep had gone silent. The unit had not really shut down, but had merely shut down the screen and any visible function. After a few hours, however, the batteries were dead.

Things I tried which didn't appear to help:

    Re-install firmware,

    Reinstall maps,

    Hard reset,

    Different microSD card.

Finally I reverted to 2.80 and all is happy again. Since I don't have any cards larger than 2gb anyway I'm not missing much.

  4. We have the majority of Garmin updates in our archives at http://www.gpsinformation.org/perry/

My Vista stopped the beeping when I switched the memory card, but has begun again over the weekend. I haven't had time to re-install the maps, but will at least try that before reverting to 2.80. I don't even own a card larger than 2gb, so don't benefit much from the update anyway.

By the way, many of the updates warn that going back a version will wipe the user memory.

  7. The base map doesn't use any of the 24mb. The area that you will be able to cover depends on the map you use. With Ibycus USA maps (free at gpsfiledepot.com) you will get road coverage of about half of Wisconsin. With Garmin's Topo 2008 you will get a bit less. If you use the free topos you get more detail, but for less area.

  9. I DID notice that if you go for download ID 4436 rather than 4435 it goes for the same file. Perhaps that's in as a placeholder for the Mac version...

    But again all pure speculation.

Actually, the vast majority of Garmin's update pages are hosted on two adjacent numbers.

Since the previous new items (GPSMAP 620 and GPSMAP 640) were on 4431/2 and 4433/4, and BaseCamp WIN is on 4435/6, I'm looking at 4437 on a regular basis.

I'm also looking at every other unused placeholder between 4400 and 4500.

    * WARNING: This software will not work unless you already own a BaseCamp or MapSource product.

    * BaseCamp will only recognize MapSource products that contain digital elevation model (DEM) data. Some examples of products that contain elevation data are Topo U.S. 24K, Topo U.S. 24K National Parks (version 3), Topo U.S. 100K (version 4 and later), Topo U.S. 2008, Topo Australia, Topo Canada (version 4), Topo Deutschland, Topo Great Britain, and Topo products produced by many Garmin distributors.

    * BaseCamp requires Windows XP Service Pack 2 or later operating system.

    * .NET framework 2.0 is required and will be installed if needed.

    * A video card that supports OpenGL version 1.3 or later is needed to view 3D terrain.

Changes made from version 2.93 to 2.94:

    * Report any problems with beta software to OregonBeta@garmin.com

    * Note: After updating, the first GPS acquisition will take longer than normal. After the Oregon has been on long enough to collect the necessary GPS data, acquisition times will return to normal.

    * Added ability to see a list of points from the map when several points are at the same location

    * Added ability to edit a waypoint from the waypoint review

    * Improved render quality of GB Discoverer maps and maps with satellite imagery

    * Improved Main Menu setup and added option to add and remove items.

    * Improved readability of configurable data fields

    * Fixed increased battery consumption and shutdowns in some units

  12. http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=4331

Changes made from version 2.0.1 to 2.0.2:

    • Added ability to download tracks from Edge 605/705.

    • Fixed issue where clicking with route tool could cause a crash.

    • Fixed issue where the find bar would not show up a second time.

    • Made find much more responsive to changes in criteria.

    • Added ability to hit return while editing the Find Containing field to start find.

    • Fixed issue where Find near Center of Screen wouldn't find everything in certain cases.

    • Made deleting and renaming waypoints much faster.

    • Fixed to include the phone number for waypoints sent to GPS and saved to GPX file.

    • Fixed issue where importing certain GPX files could cause a crash.

    • Improved issue where waypoints were duplicated when imported from GPS or GPX file.

    • Fixed issue where recalculating route using the context menu could cause the routes title to be cleared.

    • Fixed issue where SD cards with Eastern European and Asian characters in the volume name could cause a crash.

    • Fixed auto update to not timeout prematurely.

  13. Does anyone know where I can get pics of the screen of the forerunners? Id like to see if the forerunners have a screen with a directional arrow pointing towards the cache. Also, do any of them have an electronic compass?

Garmin posts some screen shots on their product info page. There are different screens shown for the 205 and 305, so you get a couple of extras to look at. Also, Sam's review of the 205 has a few more.

  14. No doubt there are other opinions, but I think the Vista HCx is a great unit. Not just for the money, but just great. I've not done much caching with it, but have found the ones I've looked for. The GPS usually got me within 10' of the cache. On a couple of occasions when I was with someone else it did better than theirs did.

My direct comparisons have been with Garmin 60 and 76 series and Magellan eXplorists, I like the HCx better.
