With all these different great new state maps being done, is there anyway to make them all part of the same mapset instead of seperate mapset for each state? That would make things easier to manage in mapsource and on the GPS.

After re-installing the maps on the card everything is working together nicely. In the original install I had some Topo USA in the nuvi internal memory and some on the card, same with Topo 2008. Now each map type is only located in one place, either internal or on the card. I can't say that is what was causing the problems, but the problems have gone away.

I think alternating from the front to the back of the alphabet would be more fair. I would be very interested in seeing the project continue.

After considering my options I removed the SD card which contains the some of the Garmin topo maps, the MiscJunk maps, and some mp3s. At that point the US Topo and the Topo 2008 maps in the nuvi memory work as expected.
The initial indication is that the maps all work, just not all the time. The maps on the card work when the card is in, but apparently the maps in the internal memory don't work when the card is in. I'll try reinstalling the maps tomorrow and see if that makes any difference.
Any ideas are welcome.

With my nuvi 660 (current firmware and detail set to highest) I get no topographic contours with either Topo 2008, the older US Topo, or the 24K National Parks maps. With the Wyoming maps from http://MiscJunk.org I get contours.
I do get all the roads and streams, etc., just no contours. I'd love to find out there was a simple fix for this. Maybe its a change from the 600 series to the newer models.

I've been using my StreetPilot 2610 that way for years, but hte nuvi doesn't seem to show contour lines with Garmin topo maps. Third party topo maps work just fine.

The eTrex series does not have a jack for an external antenna, so basically the answer is no. If you do a Google search for 're-radiating GPS antenna' you can get some ideas about possible workarounds.

Since this thread started Garmin has posted an update for MapInstall, it might not hurt to try it.

I've been using the maps from http://www.miscjunk.org/ with Bobcat and MapInstall for Mac with no problems.

The Venture HC comes in at about $140 and offers an awful lot of performance for not much more.

If you go to https://my.garmin.com/mygarmin/marketing/geocache.htm you can download multiple caches directly to your Garmin. You may have to install a plug-in and register first, but it makes the process pretty simple.

Thats what Bobcat is for. MapInstall is for installing the maps on the gps, Bobcat is for moving tracks, waypoints, and routes. Both to use the same maps, and they seem to rely on MapConverter and MapManager to get the maps from an installation on a Windows machine.

I received the message "Exception thrown" during startup.
I didn't have any problems. So far I've only had a few minutes to play with it, but It will let me move tracks and waypoints back and forth and view them on MapSource Topo. I already had the maps installed from trying MapInstall, so I don't know yet whether it eliminates the need for converting a Windows installation.

Easy money! So what was affected by this update? Funny that you can update through Garmin WebUpdater but their website does not show it yet.

3.02 doesn't have DEM data
2008, in addition to the DEM data, has somewhat update roads, POIs and contouring based on the DEM data rather than the metric contours on the 1:100,000 maps from the USGS. Also, 2008 comes on a DVD and installs on your hard drive by default. 3.02 comes on 3 CDs and defaults to needing to insert a disk when you want to use it. It can be installed on the hard drive without much trouble, however.

Where does it say that the Astro has a 3-axis compass? The one I have is just as touchy about being level as my 76S. If thats a 3-axis compass then there's no point in spending more for it.

The base map hasn't improved enough to get excited about. Roads and Rec still works fine. It doesn't auto-route and doesn't have the newer roads, but it does have better detail of small/dirt roads than the newer products.

I don't know about specifying an existing icon, but its not difficult to create a custom icon. See the writeup at http://www.gpsinformation.org/penrod/poilo.../poiloader.html for a brief description. Basically you have to have a bmp file of the same name as your csv or gpx file in the same directory when you run POILoader.

As an interesting side bar to this thread, after updating my nuvi 660, I plugged in the Astro that I'm working with and it updated to v. 2.10.
It does say that its using a SiRF chip when it starts up, but the update was listed as being for chip Type G2 v. 2.10.

If you tried to send all of the Topo set you may have run into the segment limit. I don't recall the exact number, but it seems like the gps can only deal with 2024 map segments. If you managed to send more than that to the card the gps gets confused.
