I'm using a Oregon 300 with my Mac Pro, and they get along quite happily.

Solution: use a measuring device to find the exact centers of where you want the white marks and put then on yourself with some heavy duty tape marks or white paint. Not that difficult really. Me thinks the accuracy of the digital compass would introduce more variability than slight errors with centering the markings.
If you really wanted to get fancy, you could use a small V file to make a slight slot to view along.

I have been using a MAHA charger for several years without any problems.
A number of companies make an eneloop type battery now. Duracell, Sony and Kodak just to name a few. I've also seen Sony AAA's.
