England is part of The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, or UK for short. If England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are listed as separate countries, the count is not exact. There are many territories who are recognized by only some countries, Palestine (and even Israel) are good examples. Of course here in Finland we have oour own oddity in gc.com lists: Åland Isles are listed as a separate country.

528' What is this magic number? Am I supposed to remember that it's 528, not 582 or 628? Is it some factor related to resolution or error margins in the formula you use in coordinate <-> distance calculation? Why would anyone pick such a random distance as a limit?

En nyt jaksa mennä WMComin puolelle lukemaan, onko tuo kuvaus muuttunut siitä, mitä se oli aikoinaan. Aluksihan tuo oli joku jenkkien viranomaisen kanssa pyöritetty yhteisprojekti, jossa ko. viranomainen hyväksyi earthcachet kaikkialla maailmassa. Se tuntui luonnottomalta. Jos joku noista olisi oikeasti kiinnostunut, niin ehkä aikoinaan suunnitellun Diges-kuvion päälle voisi jotain toteuttaa. Projekti on siirtynyt lepotilaan melko pian Speksimiitin jälkeen, kenties puuhamiehiin voisi olla mahdollista potkia hieman eloa, jos systeemille oikeasti olisi kysyntää. PS. Ai niin, mielestäni 'Maakätkö' ei ole hyvä suomennos. Varsinkin kun puhutaan 'Suomen maakätkösivustosta' tulee mieleen, että 'maa' tuossa viittaisi valtioon. Muutenkaan liiallinen termien suomentaminen ei mielestäni ole hyväksi.

Tuhannetta veikattaessa muistaakseni tehtiin niin, että järjestys laskettiin sen mukaan, milloin kätkijä teki kätkön kuvaussivun eli selkeästi laskettiin waypoint id:n mukainen järjestys. Tämä oli sen vuoksi, että aiemmin kätketty mystery (tai muuten vaikeampi hyväksyttävä) saattaisi tulla hyväksytyksi mahdollisten myöhempien tradien jälkeen. Eli reviewerien osuus hyväksyntäjärjestyksessä haluttiin jättää pois laskuista. Reviewer sitten ilmoitti, kun jono ennen tuhannetta oli purettu. Selvästi oli havaittavissa, että ilmoitettujen kätköjen määrä edellisellä viikolla laski, kun ihmiset viivästyttivät julkaisemista hetken osuakseen tonnikisan kannalta oikeaan hetkeen. Sitten porukka julkaisi kätköjään sellaisena purskeena, että vapaaehtoisvalvojat olivat hetken aikaa jumissa tulvan kanssa. Toisaalta jonon pidätteleminen vaikeutti "sormi enter-napilla" odottelevien ajoitusta, kun kukaan ei tiennyt, montako purkkia jo oli jonossa odottamassa. Tuo numero tuhat osui sitten "pienen" taktikoinnin jälkeen minulle, kun heitin Six-Shooter -sarjan kuusi kuvausta kerralla sisään, luonnollisestikin ihan sattumalta juuri tuolla hetkellä

Mä esim. koitin tunkea reilut 500 html-kuvausta (+ vihjeet omissa tiedostoissaan) 6630:aan ja lopputulos oli se, että toi ei jaksanut avata hakemistoa. Tiedostonhallinta jäi taustalle pyörimään joka kerta kun erehdyksessä meni siihen kansioon väärällä tavalla. Useimmiten prosessi huudatti CPUta siihen tahtiin, että täysi akku kului loppuun ennenkuin kansio oli avattu. Fiksumpi systeemi on kyllä suunnitteilla, tarkoituksena teipata jotain Postgres-tietokannan päälle maailmankaikkeuden ilmastointiteipillä eli Perlillä.

I bet Rough Cryptography is not the only mystery cache where you are supposed to brute-force the coordinates...

Also note that there is no attribute "this cache needs no scuba gear", it can't be set on any cache. To notice this, you have to own a cache and go to edit attributes page, as it's not documented in any other place (or is it? I haven't found) See another thread on same subject

Jossain vaiheessa kai todettiin että gccomiin listattu eventti saattaisi kaivata muutakin ohjelmaa kuin kätköilyä, esim. seminaaria, esitelmää tms. Laivalle kai ois helpompi joku tila saada jos ois ryhmävaraus? Tuon voisi tietenkin tarkistaa, jos laivayhtiö antaa tilan käyttöön muutenkin niin pitääkö siitä maksaa ekstraa koska kyseessä ei ole ryhmä? Samoin voisi harkita vaikkapa tapahtuman t-paidan painattamista.

Vasta tänään tajusin kuinka kuusessa tuo paikka onkaan; ei sovi ollenkaan tämän säikeen otsikkoon. Kehä III:lta on lyhyempi matka Hgin keskustaan (luokkaa 15km) kuin tuonne miittipaikkaan (yli 20km).

To see if email has been delayed (and where did it get delayed) you open it in your email program in a mode called "show all headers". In some MS mail clients this is called "Properties" or "View source". There you find lines marked "Received:..." and read them from bottom to top. You can see all the servers the message passed thru and the time that happened (note the time zones). Normal time for a message to pass from, say, WA to Europe is 15 secs. Anything more than 5 minutes can be called a delay. This is also a good way to see where spam mail comes from. You can check the numeric addresses with services like www.whois.com and get the country/ISP where each server is.

Charset is a property of a web page that tells what characters the page can use and how they are encoded. Websites like gc.com usually don't set it separately for each page, but use same setting in their templates for all pages. I'm not sure if katakana is included in that charset. Even if it is and katakana is inserted as text, the user still needs the font installed on his PC to see it. To guarantee everybody sees the text right, it's safest to insert the text as a small picture (see GCNP8X) Type the text using a drawing program text tool or take a screen shot from word processor. Then cut the picture to smaller size and save as .jpg (.png and even .gif would be better for this purpose, but gc.com doesn't accept those formats), upload to cache page and insert <img> tag in the text.

So back to the topic... Gc.com has not changed the way pages are rendered ("displayed") on user's screen or on other media. That is done by the browser program on end user's PC, terminal, cell phone etc. In this case, the expected function with <center> tag is not defined in current HTML standard, so one can't really say how it should be handled. I guess different browsers show it in different ways. I haven't really studied in depth the way those boxes are positioned on the page, but I'd guess they are floated. This should reduce the free space, where other elements of the page are rendered. I think it sounds quite reasonable that a browser centers to the middle of the free space, not the center of browser window. The problem when using deprecated features is that you don't know when program designers stop to support them. Naturally new features conflict with the logic used 10 years ago (that's why the old ones are deprecated), and every browser wants to do current features right. If that means that deprecated features will break, that's no big loss - supporting them is not crucial. Page designers (I'm talking about web pages in general) should stick to standards and use HTML validators. Otherwise they should test their code with all possible browsers and all recent versions of those. If you run gc.com front page with w3.org validator, you notice it fails first time on the second line No wonder people have had difficulties with different browsers... If user tries to mix antique features with initially faulty framework using modern features, no wonder browsers don't know what you meant. I've seen some terribly broken cache pages (but luckily not so often than other web pages). I usually use Firefox on Linux/KDE, or Safari or Firefox on Mac. To see some pages, I have to use my wife's Windows-PC and can't even use Firefox there. That's because some people think if they can see their page, everyone else can see it. too. They've learned some cool trick 10 years ago, combine it with some new features and copypaste in some javascript they found on the 'Net, test it with their MSIE and just publish it on a free site that adds it's banners, popups and trackers...

I think <center> was HTML 3.2 element, that was deprecated in 1997, when HTML 4.0 became the new standard. That means it has not been part of HTML for nearly 9 years and that it really shouldn't be used any more. Same as <font> and several other tags from the early years of web. If you really want to break the style defined for pages in style sheets, i guess you could use something like <div align="center">...</div>.

Better would be if there was a locale setting on user's profile page. User's browser is not necessarily on the same time zone that the user is, there are users that don't use a Windows-based desktop PC. Now we have a time zone setting in Forum Control Panel, but it affects only time shown on forums. One setting at user profile could take care of: * time zone * measures (metric vs miles/feet/fahrenheit) * paper size for the PDFs * date format The support for this functionality is built-in in all modern operating systems, I guess it would be also in MS Windows, which is the server's platform. Would love to see this one, too.

Could the moderators, when locking a thread with message like "Closing duplicate thread", provide a link to the thread where the conversation is supposed to be moved, please? This would be especially nice when the other thread is in another forum which you don't usually follow. BTW, is there an option to join the two threads, that would be even more appropriate. Also, when moving threads to another forum, it would be nice to know where the thread was originally opened; something like Moved from Nordic countries forum to Geocaching.com website forum, because this is a website design issue. Minä käsitin tuon tekstin kyllä toisella tavalla. Ei haluttu ajaa autolla viereen vaan haluttiin, että traditionaalisessa kätkössä koordinaatit osoittaisivat kätköön. Siis tarkoittaako sinun sanastossasi traditionaalinen kätkö, jossa on tarkat koordinaatit drive-in -kätköä. Minkäköhänlainen ajoneuvo sinulla onkaan allasi, jos maastosta riippumatta pystyt sillä annettuihin koordinaatteihin ajamaan? Estääkö metsään kätkeminen tarkkojen koordinaattien ottamisen vai mitä ihmettä tarkoitat? Tarkoitatko toistuvilla viittauksilla ulkoilmaan, että kun koordinaatit ovat epätarkat, menee etsijällä pidempään ulkona jolloin harrastus on vielä terveellisempää? Olisiko mielestäsi siis hyvän kätkijän peräti tarkoituksella annettava epätarkat koordinaatit, jotta kanssaharrastajien hapensaanti olisi turvattu? (Vinkki: Jos laitat kätkön 500m päähän parkkipaikasta, saa etsijä raitista ilmaa kävellessään edestakaisin. Jos matkaa on 2km, lisääntyy hapensaanti. Mutta ainakin etsijä karttaan katsoessaan tietää, mitä on tulossa) Eikö gepsi toimi kunnolla Keski-Suomessa? Oletko harkinnut viedä sitä huoltoon? Niin on, esimerkiksi tuolla. Ehkä olisi ollut parempi jatkaa sitä säiettä? Voisiko moderaattori teipata säikeet yhteen? Missäs tuollainen tarkkuus on ilmoitettu ja miltäköhän vuodelta tuo on? Oisko linkkiä? Mielestäni se, että kätkijällä ei ole käytettävissä tehtaan uusinta gepsimallia ei tarkoita, että kätkiessä voisi olla huolimaton. Päinvastoin, silloin pitää olla kaksin verroin huolellisempi Jos haluaa sijoittaa rahaa sen verran, että laitteessa on Fire-and-Forget -tyylinen toiminto (automaattinen keskiarvolaskenta muutamalla näppäilyllä), niin mittaustapahtuma toki on yksinkertaisempi. Eikös tuosta implisiittisesti seuraa, että vaatimattomammalla laitteella se on monimutkaisempi? En minä ainakaan viitsisi pitää monen sadan kännykkää kädessäni nollakelillä räntäsateessa kalliolla liukastellessani, jos vaihtoehtona olisi upotuksenkestävä Garmin. YMMV.

If every attribute could be set also to a false value, then the right interface for PQ generator should be to select one of four options for each attribute: Ignore this attribute (default for new query) Must be set to Yes Must be set to No Must not be set at all (aka NULL) But as there are attributes that can't have negative value (you can't set "this cache has no snakes") this logic wouldn't work for those attributes. Edit: 2 more options to the list: Must not be Yes (must be No or NULL) and Must not be No (must be Yes or NULL)

The problem is, as I earlier wrote, that in PQ you have too many possibilities to select.
