  1. I'm not sure if this is a silly question or not.  I was reading the photo and essay rules.  The photos and essays will be judged with the following criteria:

    Applicability to Geocaching Experience (30%),

    Creativity (40%) and

Suitability for Advertising & Promotional Purposes (30%).

I assume that the "Suitability for Advertising & Promotional Purposes" is for advertising Jeeps.  Since Jeep spent some money, they should get something out of it right.  But I hope it is for the advertising and promotion of geocaching.  You see, I have a Buick Rendezvous that I go geocaching in.  I am at a serious disadvantage if I take a photo of my family sitting on the hood of the Buick overlooking the a sunset from the Sierra Nevadas if the judges are all Jeep people.  Does anyone think stories or photos not involving Jeeps can win the photo or essay contest?

At the end of each Contest Entry Period (per the schedule above), registered Geocaching Account users will have the opportunity to nominate the “best” Photo and the “best” Essay

Are we really going to judge the photos & essays?

We might get to nominate the top photos and essays but it will be the approvers who decide the winners. At least that's what I got from all of it.

The top nominated Photos and Essays will then be judged, on the same criteria, by the Geocaching Approvers Panel.

  2. Streets and Trips only accepts coordinates in decimal degrees (DDD.ddd) so if your entering caches manually you'll have to convert from the decimal minutes format used on Geocaching.com

You can go to the cache page and use the "convert to NAD27 at jeeep.com" to convert it for you. The top set of coords (DMS) is the one Streets and Trips likes.

Oh thank goodness!! I'll try that. Thanks!

  3. YAY! It finally arrived!

I've been playing with it alot today. Cool program!

I have a question...hopefully someone here knows the answer.

I punch in a lat/long and it shows the location about 50 miles or more off. I punched in one coord that was in Missouri and it showed the location about 50 miles to the south in Arkansas. What am I doing wrong?

  4. We've been having trouble with our server due to recent, necessary upgrades, but submissions can be emailed to anyone on our "about us" page.

Every time I click on any of the links to send email to anyone on the About Us page, it says "Temporarily Unavailable". But I found another email link in the Contact Us section for article submissions, todayscacher @ aol.com and used it. I hope that's ok.

Actually, that email address on the site says todayscacer @ aol.com (missing the "h"). I added an "h" in cacher and sent it. I hope it made it. But if that's the correct address as shown on the site, please let me know and I'll resend it.

Thanks! You guys do great work with the magazine!

Editted email links for same reasons as Pyewacket. No spammers!

Hey! That's GREAT artwork! I'm not sure it would go over well to show a completely different icon for micros... though I consider them to be a different type, micro fans don't.

Makes me wonder, if a micro is not a different type but a size, why are there different icons between a regular and an extra large container then? Why is there even an Unknown icon?

I also consider micros a different type. They are different from a regular cache. We talk about hunting for micros or regular caches here as if they are different because we are more likely to hunt a regular than a micro.

I like the toilet paper tube suggestion someone made earlier. If it fits into a t.p. tube, it's a micro. If it doesn't, its considered a regular because chances are there's room for trades in the container, even if its just small items. I thought that was a great idea. If this type of sizing method was used, you could use a film can for the icon.

  6. Why not take him out on some easy ones?

I really wish I could. But he just doesn't have the legs for it anymore. I would feel terrible if I took him out and something happened. I think my grandma would go on a few with me. She likes to walk. But then I would get that guilty feeling again leaving my grandpa behind. Sucks. I just want someone to see all the cool places I see when out and about. I think geocaching is a great thing to do to spend quality time with someone, but it just came around too late. I still geocache with my 5 year old and am glad we found something we both love to do. I just hope she still likes it when she is a teenager...lol

Here's a thought from someone that isn't too far away from not being able to get out and around enough to geocache. Buy a digital camera or a camcorder. Take a lot of pictures of you and your daughter geocaching. Make sure you are in the pictures too.

Most digital cameras or camcorders allow you to hook up to a TV to run a slide show or show the movies. Go to his place, and show him the fun you are having. If possible, get him involved in looking over prospective cache hunts and helping you decide which ones to go on next. Or let him flat out pick one -- make it a big deal. Go by his place on the way to the hunt. Show him what you are taking along. Stop back by on the way home. Show him the pictures of the cache HE picked.

I'll just bet he'll be as excited as you are, will want to tell his neighbors about "the cache hunt I sent them youngsters on."

DOH!!!! This is a great idea Team Asperno!! But it sparked another idea I just thought of! I could hide a cache for him! He lives on old farm that used to be a train stop and had a school and gobs of other interesting historical stuff attached to it. There's not much to see anymore as far as buildings, except for the old school but it might be interesting to the history buffs in the area. Oh man, he would love that! There's also an cemetary just a 1/4 mile from his farm that is one of the oldest in the county. I really like your idea but thought of this one as I was reading yours. I can't get him to a cache but I think he would love to maintain one on his own property. This sounds like fun!

  8. Is it possible to be put on a list of volunteers in my area for caches on the verge of being archived due to the owner not responding? I'd be willing to adopt caches that were close enough for me to maintain rather than have them go bye-bye because the owner gave up on them.

  9. See Pandy, I love reading what others have taken after I've been to a cache and left something. It's neat to me to see when stuff I've left is moved on by someone else.

    Paula <_<

I know..I would love it to be like that too, if this was a perfect game and everyone played fairly. I know what you mean though. I do mention leaving sig items in my log but that's about it.

  10. When we do put the original cache contents we put it in a note so it falls off the page automatically and doesn't clutter the main description.

As to why it is put in is the same reason people say what they took and what they left. It's part the original way the game was played. I think it quickly became optional.

    Hope this helps!

That's a good idea. I'm going to do that when I hide my first. That way it stays in order with the rest of the logs as well.

I quit putting in what I took and what I left in my logs. For some reason, I just can't get it out of my head that if I say I left something really nice, that someone would revisit the cache for the sole purpose of taking my good item out. I don't like to entice the cache raiders any more than I have to.

  11. My sister, BIL and I were sitting around one weekend and griping because there was never anything to do and we were tired of playing cards, games and karaoke. A few days later, a good friend of mine told me about geocaching. I didn't think much of it at first because I thought it cost alot to get started. Once I found out a basic GPSr cost hardly nothing, I got more interested. Talked my BIL into buying one and off we went. Couple weeks later, I bought my own GPSr. Since then, they've been working on their house and I've been leaving them in the dust as far as cache finds. I think it would be more of a winter time hobby for them instead of doing it in the spring and summer when they have more projects to do. For me, I'm ready to go year round...lol

Found my first cache on March 28th, 2004 and already have almost 50 finds. I can't get enough of geocaching!

  13. The competition is open to Florida residents. Just not the sweepstakes.

SO you mean that they can play searching them. and writing essays, photo. etc. but are not eligible to win?

Not eligible to win a jeep, yes. They can still win gear in the essay and photo contest for the TBs.

what gear would this be? is there a link to it?

    http://jeep.geocaching.com/contest/

The top nominated Photos and Essays will then be judged, on the same criteria, by the Geocaching Approvers Panel. One (1) Photo and one (1) Essay winner will be chosen during each period to win great Jeep gear!

  14. swim. snowshoe. bike.

my friend uses a wheelchair and then buttscuttling. last weekend some guys in our party pushed her back up the hill, which i think counts as a whole other experience.

the really fun part is where we wait for people to pass by and leave her alone trying to wheel up a really steep hill and i go ahead a little way and shout "look, i don't care what your dadgum excuse is this time. i want you to HURRY!" and then i pause, walk a little way, and shout "if you're not in the car in ten minutes, i'm leaving without you."

    OH, you're eviiillll!! LOL

Mainly by foot or van. I've also gone by boat, just this past weekend.

Geocaching by Segway would be really fun!
