  1. In my (very inconsequential) view, your original question was perfectly acceptable. I can't for the life of me see how anyone could have been offended.
  2. Go to the search page, and search on your postcode, this will produce a list of 500 caches, so go to the last page in the search and look at the distance for the last cache on that page (number 500). Hmm! I tried that but ended up with over 27000 caches, and what's more - they were all in Germany. Don't think I'll bother again.
  3. Have you tried searching this forum to see if this question has been asked before?
  4. In any public activity you will always get people who gain enjoyment from upsetting others. You only have to look around almost any town or city where you'll see grafitti, petty vandalism, litter etc. to see how widespread it is. Now geocaching has developed beyond being the plaything of a few dedicated "insiders" and has entered the "mainstream" that we all now enjoy it is inevitable that it too will be affected. Until society as a whole is changed you will never stop it so we'll just have to live with it. That's not to say that we shouldn't take what steps we can, such as reporting such abuse of the system to the company that purports to own and regulate the activity on our behalf, but in the end we'll never stop it. Accept this and move on. Even if a cache has disappeared the vandals cannot take away the challenge of hunting for the location and the sense of achievement of finding it, nor can they take away the fine view or whatever special element made the cache owner choose that particular spot to bring you to. Of course, if it was a film pot in a grubby layby then that's another story!!
  5. I thought they were concerned with the integrity of the site and the good name of the sport in general. Sure these cache vandals are playing a game by setting up multiple accounts but surely the site owners ought to be keen to shut each one down as soon as it gets reported to them. I suspect they would react quicker if people started moving their listings to other listing sites such as Terracaching or Navicache. Or am I just being an old cynic?
  6. When you all reported them to Groundspeak, what was their reaction? I'm surprised the account(s?) is still active.
  7. So would it be an idea to write what you REALLY think about an "inappropriately sized" cache rather than just some bland platitude when posting a log? Perhaps something along the lines of: "A lovely location for a cache but such a disappointment that it was not a larger container with the ability to house swaps and Travel Bugs in keeping with the original spirit of geocaching."
  8. Mmmmm! Kate Humble, covered in sweat! Mmm mmm!!!!
  9. Thanks for your contributions. I've also asked for a local perspective in the UK forum and there are so many variations I'm still none the wiser but I am reassured that I'm not alone in wondering. Of course as an English speaker (as opposed to American) it's almost academic as we don't refer to "Trash", we call such detritus "Litter" or "Rubbish" (as in litter bins or piles of rubbish).
  10. What's the British (proper ) English take on this?
  11. No real reason, I've just seen mention of it and it set me wondering. I sort of assumed it was with a soft "C" like in Cider.
  12. I know what CITO stands for but how is it pronounced? Is it "KITO" or "KITTO" or "SITO" or SITTO"? Or something else?
  13. From what I've seen here, most people recommend GSAK
  14. Or you could look down the page where you'll find this typical thread.
  15. Even in my short time here I have seen this question asked several times. The forum seach facility can provide some answers.
  16. I suppose because GC.com ISN'T the only cache listing site. Nice to see non-commercial alternatives getting a mention too. Now I know about it I'll have to find out more.
  17. I see BBC Countryfile have got a section on Geocaching tomorrow (Sunday) morning. See http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00j06n0
  18. Thanks for that. It's just the sort of information I was looking for.
  19. I can't remember exactly where it was, but I've seen a trig point in someone's back garden. There was certainly no public right of way there!
  20. I hope to come on a caching holiday to America in a couple of months and I wanted to know about pay as you go (prepay) mobile phone SIM cards to use when I get there. I assume they are widely available like at home and I'll be able to go into the nearest supermarket and buy one. Is this right? Also is there a network you'd recommend for this type of use? I use Geocache Navigator and Google maps on my phone while caching at the moment, do these SIM cards come with a data plan so I could continue to use these applications? Finally what are the charges like? I have a tri-band unlocked phone so I only need the SIM. I should be staying mainly in the North East of the states, New England down to Maryland. Thanks.
