  1. I would like to create a cache to eagle series of caches in my county. One of the eagle projects that I think will make a great cache location is a life jacket lending station. Someone else has already mounted a book exchange on one side of the station, so I expect that he will grant me permission to mount a geocache on the other side. I have found caches like this before: locked boxes mounted to fences and the like, in plain site. I like them, but I am wondering where I might find a box like this to put a lock on. Have any of you ever hidden a box like this? Where did you buy it? Thanks for your help.

  2. I had something of an epiphany when I realized that the GPS in my car was the same brand as my hand held GPS, and they had the same shaped port. I hooked up my Garmin Nuvi to my computer and found a file name that I recognized, so I dragged and dropped a GPX file there. It was awesome, now I could drive to the cache coordinates quite easily. Previously, I had been entering each cache coordinates by hand or trying to use my hand held while I drove. Stupid. But now I have another problem. I tried to enter an address and save it to favorites, but my favorites file is full. That makes sense, since I loaded a hundred caches or more, so plugged my Nuvi back into my computer and I dragged the file with my caches in it to the trash just like I always do with my handheld GPS, but it made no difference. I still have dozens of caches in my favorites folder.

Does anyone here use the Garmin Nuvi? Have you had similar trouble? How did you fix it? I don't want to clear my favorites completely. I just want to clear out the caches. Is this possible?

  3. Do you want to use an existing cache, or start a new one?
If you would like to convert an existing one, I am totally OK with that. Just add a clue and change the name and description to match the others in the series. We are going to have a description template available soon.

  5. Three updates:

Date for implementation: October 1, 2013. A message from a volunteer reminded me that January 1st is a terrible time to be hiding caches in many parts of this great state.

Series Name: a cacher in Washington (Terrible Ts) saw this thread and decided to do an identical series in his state. He contacted Lorriebird, one of the cachers maintaining the Cache Across America series, and she recommended that we change the names of our series. She worries that cachers will confuse our series with hers, and she has an excellent point, so I've decided to change the name of this series to Discover Oregon Counties.

Template: Terrible Ts has offered to work out a template for us each to use in the description field of our cache pages. His look really good. You can see them here. I'll let you know when he has one of our ready to see.

To date we have 11 cachers signed up to hide a cache. We need 37, so we are 30% of the way there. Please help spread the word.

  6. I don't like the 24-hour limit on editing forum posts. I want to be able to edit them forever, but if there must be a limit, I would propose a year. The reason is because I just started a thread in the Northwest called Caching Across Oregon. As people volunteer to maintain a cache in each county, I update the lead post in the thread to reflect which counties still need volunteers. I've participated in other forums like this. As it is, I need to copy and paste the list, so I lose all my links, and people reading the thread have to scroll through to find the current list - much less useful.

  7. Sign me up for Hood River County! I think this is gonna be awesome! Also, do you have any plans for making maps, public pocket queries, and Event caches?

No, I'm afraid I don't have any plans for making maps, public pocket queries or event caches. Do you know how to make a map? Can I make my pocket queries public? I just used the zip code of the county seat. I was going to make a public bookmark list.

  8. Date for implementation: One volunteer asked when we should have our caches ready. I think its going to take awhile to gather enough volunteers. What do you think about publishing all our caches on January 1st?

  9. I'm completely annoyed. I thought I would be able to continually update the top post in this thread with the names of those who sign up for each county. I participate in another forum that works that way. But I can only edit for 24 hours, so this thread is not going to be as easy to navigate as I had hoped, but here is the current sign up sheet.

  10. "Cache Across America is a series of caches that will take you on a caching tour of the entire United States. One cache is hidden in each of the 50 states. These caches each contain a numeric clue that that will lead you to one final cache located in our nation's capital upon completion of the series." One cacher to complete the series (lorriebird) posted a You Tube

. She appears to be having a great deal of fun, and 'm more than a little jealous that I'm not in a position to do anything like that amount of travel. (Lorriebird is an airline pilot.)

So I thought it would be super-cool do exactly the same thing, on a smaller scale and call it Cache Across Oregon: a series of caches that would take us on a caching tour of the entire state. One cache hidden in each of the 36 counties. Each cache containing a numeric clue that will lead us to one final cache located in our state's capital upon completion of the series. This would be a little different from the challenge cache, Counting Counties, because you have to find a specific cache in each county rather than any cache in each county.

What do you think? Has someone already tried this? Do you think we can find 37 geocachers willing to work together on such a project? We need one geocacher in each county to maintain a cache with a clue in it. We also need one geocacher in Salem to maintain a cache. I think all the caches should be in some interesting part of each county: someplace worth visiting even if there weren't a cache there. I think existing caches should be eligible as long as the owner is willing to add a clue and change the name of the cache. I think we should also create a similar description for each cache (like the Cache Across America series) maybe with a nice graphic if anyone knows how to make one.

Please comment below if you have any thoughts about this project. Indicate if you would like to maintain one of the caches in this series. I will update this list as we collect volunteers:

  11. If I traveled to the ends of the earth to find a remote cache, and it wasn't there. I wouldn't leave a new cache at the same coordinates. I would find another spot 0.1 miles away and leave a new cache because I would want credit for leaving a new cache. On the other hand, I have had cachers discover that my caches have gone missing and I have been grateful to them for providing a new container. I don't see anything wrong with helping out our fellow cachers perform some cache maintenance, especially when the caches are so remote. If the originally cacher is no longer active, then I would want to adopt the cache if I were going to hide a new one at the same location, but I don't think that is allowed. I think we can only adopt caches if the original cache owner gives it to us, and if they are not active they might not answer our email.

  12. It seems to me that I often find the cache about 40 feet from ground zero. Likewise, others seem to be finding my caches about 40 feet from ground zero. Also, when I'm driving along the road, my "trail" is about 40 feet from the image of the road on the map. Do you think there is anything I can do about this? Has anyone else experienced anything like this? I thought maybe I should calibrate my device, but as far as I can tell, I can only calibrate the compass and the altimeter. I appreciate any advice you might have. Thanks.

  13. My ten-year-old has to make the find herself. When we get close to ground zero, I give her the Garmin and I stand very still. I don't walk around or I will find it before she does, and that spoils it for her. My seven-year-old finds a light saber (stick) and battles droids all the way down the trail. He doesn't really care about the cache unless there are cool toys in it. The last time we all went out together we were hiding caches and we spied four different animals: spider, ant, lizard and rabbit. That was fun.
