  1. Still interested if anyone else has used one or what others that bought one think.

Got mine in the mail yesterday. Hope to try it out this afternoon. First thoughts:

Wow, for something so HUGE, this thing actually feels good in my hand.

    Balance seems OK.

Not sure I like how the on-screen text keyboard works.

The plastic cover over the charger/PC connection has got to be the worst design EVER. At least connect it to the body of the GPSr..

  2. Has anyone here messed with this? I have a Oregon 300 and wanted to play around with it.

I'm not familiar with the Oregon series, what output capability does it have?

My APRS system is currently mobile using a Garmin StreetPilot colorMap (the original), and works great.

  3. 8 years ago or not, it is a cheap GPS unit for a college student who also enjoys spending money on amateur radio equipment and other various things, not an (another) expensive GPS. Being in college, being self-supported, and dealing with senior-year engineering classes, I'd much rather expend a little effort than throw money at the problem.

That being said, I realize that it is old, but am willing to work with it for the price, considering I enjoy the hunt of geocaching and don't necessarily need to be within 3 meters at all times and have the ability to have topo maps loaded for every region as some of the newer GPS units have. So, for the right price this could be just the tool I need, and would like to know if anybody has experience with or knowledge of this issue.

  4. Hello all,

I have been looking for a good handheld GPS unit, and have come across one that is billed as a 'demo' unit. It is a Magellan Meridian Color, and the only information on the demo part is that when initially powered up, the screen reads "DEMO Unit" and a demo screen cycle is played through. As far as I know, the navigation screens can be navigated on this GPS, but I don't believe the position information is correct, and while you can navigate to screens, I don't believe any of the functions are available.

My question is this: Is there any way to turn this brick into a working, cache-usable GPS unit?

    Thanks!

  5. Hello to the group here!

I am KI4RXM, of Wetumpka(Elmore Co.)/Auburn(Lee Co.), AL. Geocaching since January! Run APRS in my vehicle (Kenwood TM-C700, very old Garmin GPS) and on the lookout for a good handheld GPS unit.
