  1. Hi,

I have an area scouted out for a couple of caches, and was wondering what the opinion of people (and other beings reading these forums) are as regards placing a multi versus placing a series of caches within a nice hiking area...

The multi would allow for an involved hunt and length hike, but having the caches be seperate but relatively close would allow for more freedom of choice on the part of cachers.

    what do you think?

  2. Hi,

Just to play devil's advocate...forum mods do move off-topic threads from time to time (honestly, with some frequency), and "Abject/Adjunct Silliness" is a little off of "Geocaching Topics"...I'm all for people doing what they want with their seemingly limitless spare time, but couldn't the AS thread be rationalized into its own playpen, I mean topic zone?

  3. Hi,

A no-battery compass is a fixture in my geocaching bag...along with a map of the area I'm travelling in, a first-aid kit, water, a whistle, my leatherman, and a lighter/matches.

I wouldn't dream of going into the woods without these things...this may not be important for the "speed-caching through walmart parking-lots" set, but in a wilderness like the Adirondacks, it's just silly not to be prepared for things not working out as planned.

    Just my thoughts,

  4. ok...how about this?

    location: N 44 22.332 W 74 11.798

for north coords, give cachers 2.2459786 and have them hunt the number to multiply this number by to yield coords (in this case, my year of birth, 1969, which would give them 4422.3318, and have them round the 1000ths place)

for west coords, give cachers 3.7719073 and have them hunt the number to multiply this number by to yield coords (in this case, my wife's year of birth, 1965, which would give them 7411.7978, and have them round the 1000ths place)

to make the #s you give the cachers, you simply take the coords with degrees and minutes on one side of the decimal, and the last 3 digits on the other side, and divide it by the number you need plugged in (this is based on whatever clue you have them find the answer to)

this would yield the correct coords, prevent lucky guesses, can be done on very basic calculators, and can be easily adapted to meet individual cache needs...what's the blatant dumb-a** factor I'm missing?

  5. Hi,

make it an event and not a vitual that is actually a locationless (deception will get you snagged sooner, not even sooner or later), and you will be set...alternately, you can list it on one of the other geocaching sites as an unknown/mystery/nature/etc type.

  6. The hard part is finding the factors once you know where the final cache is going to be. Fortunately, there are factoring programs out there that will help. You may have to play with the non-coord digits a bit to come up with reasonable factors.

    Hi,

where did you get the factoring program? Is it a download, if so, from where?

    thanks

  7. Try clicking the search icon and typing decon into the Search by keyword box.  Select anydate in the refine search area, click the "search title only" radio button. Highlight "all forums"  in the search where section. This returns 9 results. Probably more information than anybody wants or needs about decon boxes.

    Thanks!

Actually...simply responding that they are small -sized military surplus decontamination containers would have been more than enough, and would have saved you some typing.

It would, however, have robbed you of a valuable teachable moment.

At any rate, I now know what decon containers are.

    Thanks again,

  8. Hi,

I've heard lots of people mention "Decon Containers" when talking about small cache containers...I assume that they're not talking about the rat poison boxes (which are cardboard and, well...poison). I would love to find out what they really are, I hate that, "out of the loop" feeling.

    Thanks,

  9. Hi,

There was a cache near my base of operation that had not been found for a while, and as there are very few caches in the ADK park anyway, I was worried that it would eventually be archived.

I sent the owner an email after looking for it once, and then asked our approver about adopting the cache...no go because the approver saw that as a violation of the grandfathering of caches placed on state preserve land...I agree with the position even if I'm not crazy about it.

I devoted one afternoon to doing a spiral search of the area, and found the cache stuffed in a stump way away from the location it was supposed to be (based on coords given and photos of the site). So I moved the cache back to it's original location, cleaned it out and resupplied it with mctreasures and log (some of the stuff was still inside, but it was soggy and gross).

I didn't do this out of the goodness of my heart, I did it so that the cache would remain active, and so that I would be able to visit it with my son when he is old enough...the cache density in my area is too low to let any cache go the way of the dodo.

  10. Hi,

Quick question here...how do people respond to these hard to find caches? I ask because a cache I recently placed is lightly hidden in a pile of rocks, and the first person who went to look for it complained about the cache being too hard to find (even though it is given a 2.5 difficulty rating and you can park about 20 feet from it).

It is a micro (insert groans here) but makes sense for the area, and does have a log and some small tradeables. The container is a 2 ounce nalgene lexan jar covered in camo tape.

  11. Hi,

I'm having some problems with getting my signature exactly the way i would like it, and was wondering if there's a FAQ somewhere about the html coding process for sigs on gc.com forums.

Specifically, I've had trouble getting my links to be clickable (they have a () after them with "visit Link", which I didn't do). I would also like to be able to link to my stats (puny as they are), and don't know how to code this.

    Any help would be appreciated,

  12. Hi,

I clean garbage out of caches as a matter of routine, I consider it an extension of CITO.

I have 2 guidelines I use in deciding whether or not to remove something:

    • If I saw it on the trail, would it go in my garbage bag, or in my trade-bag
    • If in doubt, I leave it in the cache

By the same token, I also refill looted caches, or those that have only 1-3 McTreasures in them.

Some people are always going to leave junk in caches, just like some people are going to abuse their kids...You can't stop it, you can just try to do the right thing, and hope that there are more of us then there are of them.

    {stumbles off of soapbox looking slightly embarrassed}

  13. Hi,

I use the Topozone.com link provided on gc.com cache listing pages (right next to the small map on the cache page). simply click on the Topozon.com link, and your browser will open a new page with a topo map that has a red mark where the cache should be.

You can resize the map (it opens to small, and I always resize to large), and alter the scale (I often set the scale to 1:50,000 or more so that I can see what is around the cache; controls for the map are on the lefthand side of the page.

After getting the map to the dimensions and scale you would like, you can have topozone produce a printer friendly, 1 sheet of paper, version of the map (find the link on the lefthand side of page as well). Unless the cache looks to be incredibly easy, I print out a map courtesy of topozone.com for each cache I visit.

    Hope this helps,
