  1. Hi,

I could have sworn I posted on this yesterday, but... <_<

People tend to type quickly when they are posting to the forums because they wish to post their message in a hurry...this does not lend itself to spell-checking.

The cache listings seem to have better spelling, so it seems to be a choice to not pay as much attention to the spelling in the forums...there are numerous fixes for individuals (browser spell-checkers, typing the post in a WP program and then pasting it into the forum, slowing down, editing the post after noticing an error, etc.)

  2. Hi,

I'm writing to ask a favor of sorts...

A good friend of mine who lives in Moab, Utah is getting married this summer. I would like to give him a GPS unit so that he and his new wife, who are avid outdoors-people (both in their early 30s), could do some geocaching in the Southwest.

I was wondering if there are active geocaching groups in the Moab area, and if somebody from one of these groups would be willing to take my friend out to find his first geocache. If not able to go out with him, I would be grateful for an email contact that he could get in touch with to discuss local caches and caching.

I would really appreciate any help that ayone could give me...being the kind of guy that he is, Dan might not ever do that all-important first cache if nobody helps him get out the door (he can be a little tech-phobic, and can be leery of new things).

    Thanks in advance,

  3. is "nauseum" a place where collections of vomitus are kept for viewing? or is it restricted to displays about queasiness?

Nah...your thinking of a nausaleum....

    Wouldn't that be a nausetorium?

;) depends on if it is past or present...

So if I'm in the process it's ? And after it's?

    You guys are nauseating. ;)

And this discussion begs the question, "Is it appropriate to eat food recovered from an autopsy?"

    Now I'm nauseated.icon8.gif

    Hi,

Nothing to add, I just like looking at the nested quote boxes ;)

  4. Hi,

The Northern New York Geocachers (NNYGeo) is a geocaching organization in Northern New York with a mission to increase awareness, appreciation, and enjoyment of geocaching in Northern New York. Activities of NNYGeo will include online forum and chat opportunities, geocaching-related education and outreach, and geocaching events and activities.

We are celebrating the addition of the 25th member to our fledgling organization, and hope that you will join us in improving geocaching in Northern New York.

Please join us in working to enhance geocaching in Northern New York. Membership will cost you nothing, and the benefits to us all will be huge.

(NNYGeo) seeks new members as well as to work with, not against, other geocaching groups like NYGO.

We look forward to meeting and greeting and geocaching with new members.

    Sincerely,

  5. Hi,

In addition to the survival whistles I described above, I also often drop off coins of one sort or another:

    • buffalo nickels ;)
    • steel pennies from 1943
    • wooden coins issued by the Northern Forest Archipelago ;)

  6. Hi,

My GPs uses AA, and my camera uses AAA. I simply bring spares in both sizes...how hard is that?

I would like to have all of the batteries be of the same type, but I won't buy new equipment to make this happen.

  7. Hi,

I find that cache listings seems to be correctly spelled in general, which indicates to me that people make their spelling mistakes in the forums due to rushing in their haste to post their clever responses first...a spell checker will not work for people who will not take the time to use it

  8. The initial issue with State Forest Preserves (aka Adirondaks/Catskills) is the regulation cited by Rob Messenger regarding no leaving of private property in State Forest Preserves. Once we get past this initial issue we'll have to see what's next in line to address State Forest Preserves.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, forest preserves have a special status under NY's constitution. I doubt geocaching will ever be allowed there because of that. You're best off focusing your efforts on other DEC lands.

  9. Hi,

I have followed the same method for years...

    • always take 1st aid kit, water, knife, gps, compass, lighter, garbage bag
    • take extra stuff (clothing, food, etc.) based on the day's plan
    • the other stuff in my bag is examined before I go out, and anything I didn't use last time stays home

This tends to reduce the clutter, and keep my bag as light as it can reasonably be.

  10. Hi,

This begs the question at what point does the geocaching angle prevail?  Meeting at Pizza hut for beer & pizza is obviously an event cache.  Meeting at a fair for beer & pizza isn't per the guidelines.

Do we have a 528' foot rule for other gatherings or are we allowed to gather geocachers at a geographical point on this earth and call it good?  If I have an event invite muggles along with cachers to discuss geocaching have I broken a rule?

What's the real intent?  Is it that first sentence?  If so it would seem that it is possible to have an event inside of an event barring the 528' of social distance rule.  Can we have a geoaching event at the burning man?

    Here's gc.com's guidelines

The approvers use a rule of thumb that caches placed within .10 miles (528 feet or 161 meters) of another cache may not be listed on the site. This is an arbitrary distance and is just a guideline, but the ultimate goal is to reduce the number of caches hidden in a particular area and to reduce confusion that might otherwise result when one cache is found while looking for another.

Note the use of: "rule of thumb", "arbitrary distance", and "guideline"

I take this to mean that a valid reason for having a cache within 0.10 miles of another cache could be argued, and a temporary event cache in a cache-rich environment could be an argument for this very thing.

Guidelines interpretation disclaimer: The above are just my thoughts based on my reading of the rules, the approvers are much wiser than I, are not recognised nearly often enough, deserve better than us as disciples, and most probably have a special (no waiting) entrance into heaven. B)

  11. Hi,

The Northern New York Geocachers will be hosting a get-together and YJTB distribution event. We will be holding the event in Long Lake or Indian Lake once the YJTBs have shipped, I am hoping for June 19 or 20, but we will see.

More information as this event unfolds,

ps - all of this is predicated on the belief that TPTB will ship NNYGeo some YJTBs.

  12. Hi,

I found a source for nice survival whistles, and I guess they are my signature item. They are made from safety orange plastic, have a whistle (of course), flint striker, compass (actually a pretty nice one) in the end, and have a watertight and gasketed compartment about 3"X1".

I've left these in a number of caches I've visited, and think that they are a great treasure...one lives in my caching bag permanently as a part of my equipment.

  13. The reasons for this have been debated to death. You can agree with them, or not, but since the people that own this website agree with them, that's all that matters. I can NEVER understand why some people feel it's ok to try and force someone to change their website or company because you don't like it. How would you feel if your next-door neighbor tried to tell you what color he wanted you to paint your house? Or what type of car you owned?

well yeah...how would you feel if a paying member of a club you belonged to raised a question in a polite manner about how the club's message system is run?

    what nerve :grin::mad:

I don't know if Leapfrog and Ladybug are paying members or not, but we should probably taken em out back and open up a can of whup-a** on them for suggesting that something could be changed in this member-and-volunteer-driven organization that has forums so that its members can talk about the organization.:mad:

  14. hi,

the "coffee table" factor has always bothered me...my coffee table has books on composting toilet construction, small scale farming, abnormal psych, and some hardcover mysteries (oh yeah, and a mug full of cold coffee)...I would assume that most approvers would have different stuff on their coffee tables...this whimsical "guideline" seems to celebrate, not just suggest, a subjective aspect to cache approval
