  1. I asked because a cacher couldn't find a cache I had hidden, so I went to verify that it was still there...it was/is. I took new coord readings, and they varied 5/1000ths in one direction as compared to my original listed coords. I posted the revised coords, and he added a log saying that he couldn't have found the cache with the coords that far off. My thinking is that the description, clues, and coords reasonably close, it should be findable (it is rated a 3.5 difficulty). I pretty much count on my GPSr reading slightly differently than the one that hid any cache I go hunting for, and also count on some variation on the same spot each time I return. I get in close, and then use the description (and sometimes the clue) to find the cache. I assume that the new coords are accurate, but the actuals may be in the middle...hard to say...I've been 4 times to take coords, and they are slightly different each time (I've taken the best grouping in the middle). I originally wanted to know how far off I could have been sending the cacher, and it looks like they could possibly have been looking about 23 feet off from the original coords if they used only their GPS and not the description and clues. I guess that's part of the game for me, maybe not for other people... nfa
  2. Hi, what is the distance represented by a 1/1000th of a coord measurement (example: distance from 44 20.544 to 44 20.545)? nfa
  3. Hi, I'm looking to buy a GPS unit that is simple, waterproof, and tough. Which ones do you folks know of that are waterproof? thanks, nfa
  4. I use Topozone, and just click on the location...this give a reasonable approximation of the coords. nfa
  5. I wonder if the log really means "exactly", or if the body was just nearby. If it was "exactly" at the coords, that would strongly suggest that the murder had something to do with geocaching or geocachers. I hope not, and feel bad for the victim and the finders. nfa
  6. Hi, Here are a few: Buxley's Map of NY Geocacher's University Cheaper Than Dirt American Sicence & Surplus and of course...Northern New York Geocachers nfa
  7. We had a frost last week (and snow the last weekend in May!), but it should be 70 and sunny tomorrow in Long Lake! Maybe you can come to the next event...I'm thinking of one in Saranac Lake during the winter carnival (with the world famous ice castle). nfa
  8. {{Last Bump}} Hi, The Northern New York Geocachers (NNYGeo) hosted event is tomorrow, 6/19/04, in Long Lake, NY; these has been some response, but I'm posting this last appeal to people in Northern New York to come to what should be a fun event. I would also ask that anyone who comes bring their GPS unit, digital camera, and other gear (techie and non-techie) that you consider essential (or just fun) for geocaching. I would like to see what people are using in their geocaching efforts, and bet some others would also. Thanks, and I hope to see a nice turnout tomorrow! nfa
  9. If there was such a map, you could see a huge YJTB drop (around 30YJTBs!!!) in Northern New York this weekend, as described below, and track them as they spread across the country: I prepared some door prizes for the event this weekend on 6/19/04 (if you walk in the door, you get a prize): These are gifts for all attendees from the Northern New York Geocachers (NNYGeo), and include: a cache container a YJTB "Official Geocache" ID stickers and cards NNYGeo buttons NNYGeo rear-windom stickers NNYGeo golf pencils with erasers (if they get here in time) I hope to see lots of Northern New York Geocachers this Saturday, the weather in Long Lake is supposed to be great! nfa
  10. Like that animated map in the Dustin Hoffman movie about an Outbreak of an ebola-like disease! That would be cool... Yellow Jeep Release - Zero Hours Yellow Jeep Release - 10 Hours Yellow Jeep Release - 30 Hours Yellow Jeep Release - 50 Hours Yellow Jeep Release - 100 Hours Yellow Jeep Release - 150 Hours Yellow Jeep Release - 200 Hours You get the point nfa

  13. Hi, Last night I got a notification for a YJTB that was 2 miles from my house...but the listing had not been approved yet...is it standard to send out TB notifications before approval, or is this a YJTB thing? ps - the unapproved listing is for a cache I placed, so I'm not likely to go out and raid it, but it does seem weird to notify prior to approval
  14. Has anybody ever seen a DSL (didn't sign log)? nfa
  15. I sent an email reminder, very friendly, to a cacher who picked up a TB of mine, and mentioned it in his log, but failed to "grab" it using the TB's page. no response yet...I made a point not to ask him to place the TB quickly, only to log that he has it in his posession, and drop it off when he is ready. nfa
  16. Hi, thanks for the replies so far...I think I'm down to the Etrex or the geko...what other gear would you throw in if you were giving it as a gift (or like to have thrown in if you were receiving it)? thanks for your help, nfa
  17. Dude, see above. No one forces you to play with the travel bugs except after you take one. Once you take one, you agree to log it, move it, and log your move. If you don't want to agree to that, don't pick up the bug. dude, note the in my reply, which is a clue that I was kidding...obviously nobody has to participate in the TB program...I thought that my remark might highlight the silliness of the thread, and be less impolite than a yawn (note: the skeptical face to the left signals my frustration with overly literal people). nfa
  18. I tried cachemate out, but find that I like paper cache info better, and it is one less set of batteries to wear out. I can also write notes on the paper more easily than on my palm. I'm limiting myself (for the moment ) to a GPS and a digital camera as regards tech-weenie equipement. As afr as it being cheating, I think that whatever people want to bring along while geocaching should be fine, as long as I don't have to carry it or remember to bring batteries for it. nfa
  19. Hi Flask, Now why would I have ever thought that you were messing with me last week regarding NNYgeo? nfa
  20. Hi, If only there was a way that we could do away with the rule that you have to participate in the TB program... nfa
  21. oops...to put the YJTBs into an event I'm hosting this weekend, I had to log them into my account (I think ). So I just checked, and I have 40 YJTBs on my stats page...I hope this doesn't ruffle any feathers at the event...btw, was there another way to post the YJTBs for the event (without my logging them)? nfa
  22. Hi, I'm thinking of buying a GPS unit for a friend of mine who has been fascinated by my stories of geocaching, and navigation using the GPSr I have. He is not as much of a tech weenie as I am, and I have trouble seeing him using mapping software or downloading hundreds of waypoints...he doesn't own a computer, using either his girlfriend's one or one in the local public library. He is also rough on gear, and the gps will probably end up in the water more than once. Enough background...for the reasons listed above, a Sportrak seemed like a good choice to me, but I would be interested in hearing from others in this forum on their choices if they were in my shoes, and their reasoning. Thanks for your help, nfa
