  1. I like yours more betterer! If only I could find a way to use GE overlays on a smartphone.

I know this works on a droid. The trick is to get the kml file into My Maps.

    1. Visit http://www.metzgerwillard.us/ngscs/ngscs.html and download NGSCS.

    2. Click on Query Setup to initiate a search and follow the instructions for your search type.

    3. Open the Search Results folder, click on Save As, and save the file to your computer.

    4. Visit http://maps.google.com/maps and click on My Maps. Use Google Chrome for this step; at the moment, IE8 will not import to My Maps.

    5. Click on Create New Map, Import the file you saved in step 3, and click on Done.

    6. On an Android, select Google Maps -> Layers -> More Layers -> My Maps -> NGS Control Stations.

  2. It appears they're using their own (or USGS's) server, and have better control over when to switch the image from 24k and 50k. 250k. (At least partially in the area where I was playing.)

The only thing that mine has - as far as TOPO overlays - is that for some reason mine appears more in-focus than theirs does? Couldn't figure that one out.

    Hello, Mike --

The reason for both observations is the same -- at large scales, your image may have 4-5 times more pixels than mine, as defined by the HEIGHT and WIDTH parameters. TerraServer uses the image size and geographic extent to determine the output resolution. I use the KML parameters [vertPixels] and [horizPixels] as HEIGHT and WIDTH, respectively.
