  1. Yea I agree there is something wrong with your GPS those are right off the road.
  2. If you are an active owner who activly reads logs and check caches then it should be no issue. The problem arises when people don't think about maintenance hide a series and disappear to never maintain.
  3. So is this person harassing you about it? Or just making side comments to their friends? I 'stalk' lots of peoples accounts to see what caches they do. It usually leads me to find cool caches that I would not find out about otherwise.
  4. What do you mean by stalking? If they are sending emails to you that you feel are inappropriate you can forward them to Groundspeak. If they are trying to just follow you then don't log right away.
  5. Nope I disagree. Have challenges changed? Yes a little but you still can put together a good one. I think the new rules make them a lot better. The knowledgebook does not ban using GSAk it simply states: You are correct you cannot require someone to use GSAK to document, but it can be an option.
  6. Thanks I was feeling lazy and didn't want to show my example. Now if I lived in that area and had found all the traditionals and I could just look at that map I would instantly know which circle(s) was in an area that I hadn't found a cache. From there it wouldn't be too hard (depending on how much zoom was allowed) to figure out the final for the puzzle/multi. (This now gives me an idea for a puzzle!)
  7. You bring up an interesting point. PM is valuable to me due to PQs. Without a great program like GSAK PQs would not be very valuable to me. Of course if GSAK (and others) had not been developed who knows maybe Groundspeak would have developed their own offline database management system.
  8. If this was done then what would be the point of puzzles and multis? People could just go to 'hide' a cache look at the map and see where the puzzle final was. EVERY cacher who has ever hidden a cache has had to go through the same thing.
  9. I'd be very careful with this kind of estimation. I know many very active cachers who do did not log a cache on Favruary 29. There are many that do not care about the 366 grid and also many who do not have a findable cache close by to be found that they can visit in the middle of the week. Cezanne That's why I added 16,500 (over 18%) and made it 100,000. I know not everyone got out and logged one that day, but I figured a large majority would have.
  10. Yep! Thats where I got my numbers as well but I disagree about the percentage. The extra revenue is their store and ads. Anything else that I am missing? yea it's hard to pinpoint an actual PM percentage. As far as other profit streams trackable numbers is a big one.
  11. Feb 29 was heavily promotted and most active cachers were finding at least one cache that day to fill in their 366 grid. The number of cachers that logged a cache was 83,516. So I would not put active members more than 100,000. I don't know the percentage of PM but I doubt it's 50%. Let's say it was 20% (that seems reasonable to me). That's $600,000 a year in PM fees. I don't know if they're filthy rich, but even if they were it wouldn't bother me. $30 a year is a bargain for all the service it provides.
  12. The more active cachers in Beaufort area are: http://www.geocaching.com/profile/?guid=75a2627d-84a6-43d1-afc7-d2f4cd1a6156 and http://www.geocaching.com/profile/?guid=358a3a11-0ede-436d-a344-e8fc990819e6 If neither of them get back to you send me the coords. I usually end up there at least once a year for work and would be happy to go back to Fort Freemont.
  13. I always thought it was a reference to those old spy get ups with the trenchcoat and hat.
  14. Maybe there's a trail that cuts behind the property that you are unaware of. I've had a complaint or two on a couple of mine that are on a neighborhood trail system. People said they didn't feel comfortable and sounded like they may have parked in the neighborhood and may have cut through a yard. Of course I have parking coordinates and I sent them an email letting them know.
  15. On a caching trip on New Years day we were leaving a neighborhood and my friend yells STOP. So I pull over and she jumps out. When she came back to the car she had a wad of cash. I think it was about $100 I asked for a 10% finders fee.
  16. Yep the people I cache with go out of our way to try to find the most awesome caches for our milestone. My plans for 1k didn't pan out. But 2k, 3k, 4k have all been great experiences. I also get the added bonus of doing awesome caches when someone else in that group hits a big milestone. I'm already thinking about 5k and have a few that are at the top of my list.
  17. Unfair maybe. My personal rule is must be present to log. So I'm not going to log something like that. Will they be banned? No Unless they posted the solution on your cache page or on these forums there is no way Groundspeak can do anything Can you delete the logs? No. They signed it so it does not matter whether or not they did the cache the way you intended. There are thousands of puzzle caches and I bet most of them have at least one finder that never even looked at the puzzle. As long as they find it they can log it.
  18. I've seen both sides. I've seen plenty of hiders who find bunches of easy parking lot caches with no creativity and then they go out and hide parking lot caches with no creativity. I also recently did a cache put together by a local TV show. I don't know if they had a cacher help them, but the account has no finds. Yet the hide was above and beyond almost any other local cache. I'm not in favor of a you must find x number of caches first. I would love to see a guidelines quiz that first time hiders had to take and pass before hiding a cache.
  19. This is a long long long shot. But a Math Puzzle Geocoin would complete my math themed coin collection nicely. Blue or red.
  20. Most containers go missing due to a muggles tumbling upon them and taking it as treasure. These people don't have accounts. If I was a cache maggot whose one goal was to steal ammo cans I would pay for the $30 PM so I could more easily filter for regulars and avoid the audit log. Like people said an ammo can can go for $10 so 4 ammo cans and I turn a profit. As for keeping them from going missing a chain works well. It will keep the muggle who stumbles upon it to leave it be (they still may raid the inside). But if there is a thief hunting ammo cans this may not persuade them to stay away and they may just come back with bolt cutters or whatever.
  21. If they continue to harass you forward the email to contact and let them deal with the nastiness.
  22. Just be clear with whaich prizes correspond to each event on the cache page. For example: Everyone who attends will be entered in to win a Geomate Jr! We'll also be having a poker run. Top prize is 2 geocoins, 2nd will be one geocoin, 3rd will be a travel bug. That way people know what to expect. I really don't care about prizes unless it's a good container I can use or a geocoin/trackable.
  23. Probably because he said "If you just want to attend the event and not go down into the river gorge to get the cache, thats totally up to you." Same for the Cache Machine Events. The event is something separate at the end of the day with a link to the local forums which have more info about the cache machine portion. There are lots of events where caching takes place during and after, but the main goal of an event is for people to meet and have fun outside of caching. Here's how it usually occurs. Plan an event in a park with caches and have a meet and great for an hour or two, during the event some people will form groups and go caching. Or even at the monthly pub meet you just ask around and say, "After we're done is anyone interested in going to find x, y, and z with me?"
  24. I just remembered I disabled two caches earlier today (around 11:30 EST) and no notification on those either.
  25. A cacher yesterday had down a couple of my hides and I went to their profile to see what else they had done. I saw they had done 3 or 4 of my hides but I had not gotten the notifications. Hours later I did receive them but I've never seen a delay! Today same thing. I've gotten 0 notifications today, but I see on the site a handful of my caches have been found.
