  1. Can someone point me in the direction of "USGS Topo Maps for Big Dummies?" I've read most of what I could find at Topozone and the USGS maps sight, but I must be missing something.

In light of a pointer to where I can find out for myself, can someone please explain what the dashed red-lined and numbers squares on This Map are for (17, 18, 19, 20...)? I'm guessing that these are "lots" of land but can't quite seem to find the info on topos as to whether I'm right or not.

    Thanks!

Nice route though. I drove from Vegas up to Hoover Dam last summer. Coming from an area where Topo lines are virtually non-existant, I *REALLY* enjoyed the scenery. It almost made some of the traffic bearable. icon_wink.gif

I got the waypoints & route and loaded them on my Meridian Gold via Mapsend Topo. I tried the above steps, and it gave me a vertical profile of zero (no detail maps for that area loaded).

Created a detail map of that area covering the whole route, loaded it, got the vertical profile fine. Still no kaboom.

I think the only thing I haven't tried was to actually travel on that route and try it at the same time.

Sorry I couldn't be of any more help!

You can email it to xxx@telocity.com, however you'll need to replace the 'xxx' in the email address with "alexmot" which is really the first half of my email, not "xxx".

Looks like we're 2 for 2 on this one. I tried several routes, short ones (2 points), long ones (16+ points), ones that went in and out of "detail map" areas, ones that ran over water, mixing user with detail POIs, etc.. I was unable to reproduce this with the steps described above on my MeriGold.

Does it do this for any route or just a specific route, or maybe any route with a specific point? If you can dump the route and points in Mapsend, I'd gladly load 'em and see if it's the unit or the data. I'm guessing it'll probably be the data.

I may tweak with it when I get some time.

I reckon the worst that can happen is that I have to three-finger-salute it into the upload mode and re-load a good copy of the firmware.

The piece that made me quick and realize that I was WAY out of my league was the S7 record at the tail end of the meridian update. I've seen and molested data in intel .hex format before, but the motorola S format has that "starting execution address" record at the end. I took that to mean "you are loading program code to the unit. When the end comes, it runs that program to update the unit to the new firmware". I ain't going there just for fun! I'm probably wrong though. If I had a little bit of experience and fully understood it, I'd go for it. icon_wink.gif

The file is in Motorola S-Record format (or at least something close to it), so it's a bit more complicated than editing data with a hex editor.

I started to write a quick and dirty parser for it, but soon gave up after I realized that I've got no experience with S records. I stopped when I think I figured that the S7 record at the end of the code translated into "Now we've loaded the program, run it!" I figure even if I *did* change it, I'd be too afraid to use it anyway. icon_wink.gif

While I'm not familiar with the Colortrack unit, here's two other things you may want to try:

    1. Initialize the unit to factory settings. Clearing all the memory (waypoints, routes, etc...) is not a bad idea either.

    2. Check the elevation mode of the GPS. It should be in 3D elevation mode. I had my GPS320 set to 2D mode for about 2 weeks once on accident and experienced something similar to what you are experiencing now.
