  1. Let's see.. Oct 10, 2010.. I'd be willing to host an event near the Original Stash.
  2. Re: note for bug drop. I've dropped trackables at a later date than the original find of a cache, so in that case I've left a note. It was mentioned on here that the note clogs up the online log, but if the cache is one that is not discovered often, I think that leaving the note might help attract another cacher. (Especially in sparse areas like, say, BLM land in NW AZ, or a cache in Iraq)
  3. If there is something of interest nearby, I'll take pictures of that. But not in a way to be a spoiler for the cache. Most of the pics I've posted have been for trackables that I've grabbed at caches. Owners of TBs would probably like the pic better than the owner of the cache that's been discovered 100+ times already.
  4. Maybe I wasnt clear in my original request. Is there a separate database or archive for benchmarks installed under the US War Department? Or are these blended under the database by the Army Corps of Engineers? If so, is this available online? Any links to databases or addresses where I could request more information. Basically I'm looking for more information on the history of this 1957 Traverse Station placed near N 31° 59.12, W 81° 29.65.
  5. Yeah, I have a few trackables showing 07/20/09 after 08/01/09.
  6. Personal opinion: Tell them to f-off. Realistic: Try rewording it to mean the same thing but appease the anti-military reviewer. edit: or remind them that without the military there would be no GPS and thus no geocaching.
  7. ... apparently I cant remember details of what I read this morning. Almost 5:30am, I can almost start getting ready for bed.
  8. I would design one, but it wouldnt get picked because the Seattlites would get offended by my use of Mt Hood (despite it being in the vicinity of the Original Stash)
  9. And where's the "track this coin at www.geocaching.com" language?
  10. *double post because the system of tubes is clogged with sand over here*
  11. Unless ammo cans have changed drastically in the recent past, they don't utilize a non-gasketed slip on lid. As I recall from the last time I opened one, (about 5 minutes ago), ammo cans utilize a high pressure compression gasket incorporated into a rather durable lid. As such, I would rate them as quite a bit better at repelling moisture than what is, essentially, a mini cookie tin. No container will keep moisture out if opened during a hurricane, but ammo cans will keep moisture out in all but the most drastic scenarios. A metal tin whose lid simply squeezes in place probably can't make the same claim. For an arid environment, I imagine those spice containers would do fine, but if your state has more than, say, 1% average humidity, I'm thinking they might not be adequate even when tucked out of direct contact with rain. One of my first caches was an altoids tin and the log was in a mini ziplock inside it. I had this wedged into a crack in the side of a log. It was only out for a year or so but the log was still nice and dry and the container itself was starting to rust. Not perfect but I suppose I would use it again for a quick fix until I found a more suitable container. My new favorite cache container is the first aid kits that you can buy at target. They have a nice gasket on them and its too early to tell but I think it'll be fine for a couple years in the wild. What is that stuff that you guys use to protect the gasket? Some kind of silcone spray or something like that. I'm hoping to pick some up soon. I'd like to have it in my maintance kit for when I'm cachin'. Right now I'm doing a test on a peanut butter jar. I bought some thin foam sheets in the craft section of target and I used the jar itself to make the circle in the foam and then I cut out the foam just slightly bigger then that circle and it fits perfectly in the top. Right now its upside down in a pot of water. I have a rock holding a wad of TP to the lid which will be the first place that see's water if there's any leaks at all. This is the same exact jar that I put water in and shook it good to clean out the excess peanut butter and it leaked pretty dang bad. Hopefully this actually does the trick. If not I'll try adding a 2nd and maybe a third foam circle or I'll go to the auto store and buy some gasket maker and try that around the inside of the jar lid. I'll let you know how my test comes out. This is day 1 and next friday I'll dry off the jar good and pop it open to see if there's any water inside. Swizzle *nod* I've found altoid tins in the PacNW and other containers that have the log in a ziplock. I still think the screw-on spice tin will work as a cache and now, to spite the nay-sayers, I think I'll plan a series of caches upon my return to the states using said container.
  12. This one actually says US War Department on it. I'll have to find the photo and post it on here, might be a few days. Didnt have my GPS with me that day, so only have approximate coordinates.
  13. Can anyone help me find more information for US War Department benchmarks? Was reviewing pictures I took at Ft Stewart a few months ago and realized I had 2 of a benchmark that I found out at a training field. Nothing listed on Waymarking.com or on GC for that location and my googlesearches find more on protesters than on survey discs.
  14. I stumbled across your blog while searching for podcasts and blogs to feed my caching need while I'm not able to go out caching (9 caches on my post is about 1 a month). I should be visiting family and caching in Iowa next summer.
  15. Hello all- I have come into possession of several unactivated TBs that I am willing to share with others if they wish to take part in the contest. Send me a PM and I'll get back to you with tracking number and activation code.
  16. 09/01 09:45 AM local time 6lbs, 15oz 19inches
  17. Put any special caches or caches others have commented they liked up for adoption. Post in your regional forum that you're looking for a cacher or club to adopt them.
  18. It also depends on who you ask. Many of the geocachers who got me started believe in an equal or greater trade for swag and trackables. Some give that standard only for trackables. My thought has been when I go out caching to have an equal or greater exchange for the day. For instance, I may leave a TB in cache 1, take nothing. Leave a coin in cache 2 and take a TB. If I don't find cache 3 then I've left more than I've taken. If I find cache 3 I could take something without leaving and my exchanges for the day are equal.
  19. http://www.geohashing.net I know some Hashers, as in Hash House Harriers, who might be quite excited at this prospect (particularly the alcohol bits.) It would actually be cool to do in an area with a cache run, like by DIA. Heck- in an area that saturated you could set up multiple routes that are 5-10km.
  20. The only time I've thought about replacing a cache container was when the owner had listed on his profile that due to health he was unable to reach some of his caches and the previous log had stated the container was cracked. Unfortunately the container I had was too small, but I did my best to make sure the crack was facing down for weather protection. I would never replace a DNF unless I had found it before (but then I'd only be watching that cache if I left trackables).
  21. I really like the design, but kept thinking something was strange. Then I realized what it was: there's a cloud! I haven't seen clouds in a few months. Almost forget what they're like.
  22. Good morning from Iraq- I have had the pleasure of discovering and/or finding several TBs that are unit coins with small holes drilled into them attached with a cable tie to a TB tag. Another option is if you have several geocachers in your unit to push for a unit geocoin. Example that I just received in the mail from another MAGC member.
