  1. And goodness knows we can't allow baby killers and Jesus freaks to infiltrate geocaching. They represent the worst of society..... I find your analogy/reference offensive. I hope you didn't mean it the way it was written.
  2. A compairing rating system for GPSr and Caches is like compairing Rating Baseball bats and baseball teams. One is a static entity and the other is a constantly changing entity. Some people would highly rate a GPSr with paperless features, while others want a large color screen or fast redraws. Firmware is often updated that drastically changes the way a unit acts. In all the other posts, I still haven't seen any logical reasons not to implement the rating system. Lots of fear of the unknown, but nothing concrete. I don't care whether Groundspeak does it or not. I love caching and will hit all the caches I can, regardless of ranking. But when I'm planning an outing with the family, a quick way to view top-rated caches in an area would be of great help.
  3. Groundspeak uses a rating system for GPSrs. Why not implement a rating system for caches. There is no LOGICAL reason not to do it. All of the naysayers are voicing opinions based on FEELINGS. I hope the GCvote gets some momentum, despite being a 3rd party opt-in sort of tool. I don't think 3rd party is the way to go. If a rating system is going to work, it must be implemented from within Groundspeak.
  4. Sounds like your Legend is working like a champ! There's nothing wrong with it.
  5. Place then submit. You don't want to upset any of the First-To-Find junkies.
  6. SpokaneGeoCachers just archived about 15 caches due to a move. I'm going to email them about adopting Greenstone (Adirondack Lodge). I enjoyed finding it recently and think it deserves to stay alive. Does anyone else think some of their others deserve a second chance?
  7. I know a lot of military folks who place caches in less than hospitable areas. After their deployment, they would have no way of maintaining the cache, save putting it up for adoption to someone on the next rotation. I'm actually looking forward to my next deployment so I can grab the few caches on the base. I'd be more than willing to step up and adopt them, if not just maintain them while I'm deployed.
  8. Unfortunately this does happen Thanks for giving us hope! What does that have to do with the thread, though? I'm actually surprised this rogue behavior doesn't happen more. It seems a pittance to pay $30 for a premium membership when compared to the unlimited value of coins/swag you could potentially steal.
  9. There is an attribute for "Boat Required". Do a pocket query to filter out only caches with that attribute. *edited* to add how to do a Pocket Query... Go to your profile page. On the right side of the screen, click on "Build Pocket Queries." Click "Create New Query." Select all the attributes you want the cache to include, including the boat icon in the "Attributes to Include" section. Happy paddling!
  10. :P Oh, my sides hurt after reading this. After I clicked on "reply", I re-read it and laughed just as hard again. You, sir, are extremely witty. TFTLaugh! 'Goose
  11. Knives don't kill people........ <shameless_plug> Join the NRA </shameless_plug>
  12. The Mongoose family just grabbed our 100th cache! We planned a special trip to do a 2-mile hike multi that took you to a since archived Moun10Bike cache (his first one in Spokane). Thanks to DreamCacheR for placing this one. We had a blast! 'Goose
  13. My idea is to create a cache with two separate ways to find it. One way would be to use reflectors at night to guide you to the cache. The other way would be to solve a puzzle using signs to crack a code to solve the coordinates for a 3-stage multi. Is this type of thing allowed? If it is, I assume this type of cache would be a Mystery, not a Multi. (Correct me if I'm wrong here.) Thanks in advance for the help. 'Goose
  14. We are referring to doing pocket queries (http://www.geocaching.com/pocket/gcquery.aspx), where you may set which cache attributes you want to filter out, or those which you want the cache to have. By using the "flashlight required" or the "recommended at night" attributes you can find caches designed for night time or you can flag your own cache as a night cache. I hope that helps. 'Goose
  15. I have done a couple in my area. I used the filters as mentioned above to find them. I'm getting ready to celebrate my 100th find by placing my first cache, which will be a day/night puzzle cache. You can solve it during the day using a puzzle or at night by using reflectors. 'Goose
  16. I just went to log a cache and went to the main geocaching.com page and lo and behold, I saw one of the few photos I have uploaded on the main page. My daughter was not happy since she has a black eye in that particular picture. I clicked "refresh" and a new photo replaced it, so she was happy that it was just a random thing. I was just wondering if this has happened to anyone else. 'Goose
  17. After reading about the seemingly easy update process to grab 1/4 million caches in the push of a button, how come no one has traveled down this train of thought.... There is a hack for EVERYTHING on the web. If this update comes from the internet, it can't be that hard to turn it into your own personal massive PQ. If you pay $70 for the unit and $20 for the update kit, that's 3 years worth of Premium Membership fees to be able to get 250,000 cache PQs for LIFE! I wonder how long it will take for the hack to come out?
  18. I absolutely love the Rudyard Kipling book Rikki-Tikki-Tavi, and my favorite animal is the mongoose because of it. Then I met my wife who, coincidentally, had a Mongoose BMX bike. When I started gaming back in god knows when, I played Quake (the original) and chose Mongoose as my character name. After running into a couple other Mongooses along the way, I distinguished myself by adding DatCrazy to the beginning. I've used it ever since in all manner of situations.
  19. Even as the father of two children ages 10 and 6, and the owner of a cache with a children's playground/toys theme, this product is a HORRIBLE idea. If my cache is on this POS, I will archive it and re-list it about 100ft away.
  20. Stealing "muggles" from Harry Potter and using it for non-geocachers is as dumb as Harry Potter itself (I'm referring to the movies, as I've never read the books). It would be interesting to do some research and see when the first use of the term can be found on the GC website. Here is something I found on the background (pre-Potter). "Muggle" was used in the 20s/30s as a slang for marijuana and possibly to describe people who weren't "in the know" about the use of marijuana. Gee, that sounds like a term I want my kids using. The following can be found on knitting.about.com... Definition: A person who doesn't knit. Or, to put it more poetically, one who doesn't know the magic of knitting. (With apologies to J.K. Rowling.) Pronunciation: mug-uhl Examples: The muggles gave us strange looks when we pulled out our knitting on the subway. Come on people! It's time to stop using the term. I'm going to do my part by going through all my logs and caches and deleting every mention of it. Who's with me!?!?
  21. That is absolutely outstanding! Ratings systems are EVERYWHERE! There is no good reason not to have them for geocaches.
  22. I accidentally "grabbed" a TB, too. Thanks for the heads up on how to make it right.
  23. K2000, it's such a shame that some people think that the only way to carry a firearm is concealed. To carry a CONCEALED weapon most states require a permit. What people don't know is that you can walk around town and almost anywhere else with an OPEN-CARRIED weapon with no permit. It is perfectly legal. The problem is, some half-wit ignoramus who doesn't know the law will call the cops on you and you'll get hassled for it. Hell, some cops don't even know the law. I've read stories of people actually getting arrested for open-carry because the cops were ignorant of the law. They ended up getting released and received an apology. But that could ruin your day, ya know? Unlike others, I DO get into politics, as should everyone else. If you believe in the Constitution and liberty, you need to check out www.lp.org (The Libertarian Party), and also be a member of the NRA. If you're military, you get 1-year free membership. Check it out!
  24. I just went and found Illumination II, but was unsuccessful with Illumination I. I'll try again soon. Has anyone done the Scotophobia cache? It sounds pretty cool, but I don't know if I want to do it alone. (For safety's sake, of course...)
