Don't you think we should stick to the continental US, Roscoe? Well Enos, I was thinking about some bonus points for Alaska and Hawaii. I'm going to run all the ideas by all participants after I get all the information in about the tb hotels. Cablemonkey suggested Washington D.C. also, if anyone knows of a good tb hotel near there. I want to thank everyone again for all the help so far, and please keep posting the state hotels here in this forum.

Thanks a bunch WildwoodBob and Welch for your input. That's two states down and 48 to go. I really appreciate all the help. We are also going to need friends in each state for when the tb's eventually make it there. 8-27-2005 UPDATE: So far we have tb stops submited for the following states--Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Kansas, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. We are still asking for advice on the other states. Please keep up the good work.

That's one of the things I like about finding caches after Pork King, he usually leaves a trail to it. Instead of calling myself fat, I like to use the more politically correct term of having a low height to width ratio. My theory is that if I can get as big out as I am tall, then I will be round. That way I can roll everywhere and save a lot of wear on my knees.

Several of us are getting a tb race started with some friendly competition between LA and MS. Our bug goals is to be placed in a travel bug hotel in each(or very near) each state's capital city. I am asking all fellow geocachers for their recommendations (along with the cache ID) on travel bug hotels in each state's capital. Can everyone help us out with this because who would know the caches better than the locals. If you are the owner of the cache, self-promotion is allowed and encouraged Thank You LSUFan

I was wondering if this was possible to do. I was needing to replace a activated travel bug to a new tb tracking number. The reason for this is because someone who actually doesn't have the tb is posting logs for the tb. This is not being done in a malicious way and is a game between some local geocachers. If I could replace the tb with a new number but keep the log posts it has, it would mess this other cacher up and he probably wouldn't be able to get the new number. Does anyone know if this can be done? Thanks

You can make you own gpx files from the ngs database. It is shown how in this forum. Works like a charm. http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=100535 LSUFan

You cannot download benchmarks per say a pocket query but you can still go paperless with them. Here's how to do it 1. You will need to go to the NGS website and download the particular county maps you want to search. It's best to do it one county at a time for the size of the file. Start out by clicking on this link http://www.ngs.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/ds_archive.prl 2. Select the state and click on get county maps 3. Select which county and click on the download PC Zipped button to get it downloaded (make sure to unzip the file if your computer doesn't do it automatically for you) The file you will get will be in the .dat format. The data in this file will probably be more current than the data on GC. You will need another program that converts it into the familiar gpx format that everyone uses with GSAK, GPXSonar, Mapopolis, etc etc. This is why you need one more piece of software conversion utility. 4. Click on this link and get the BMGPX conversion software. http://parkrrrr.com You will then convert the dat file to a gpx file and there you go. PAPERLESS. Put the BMGPX file in it's own folder. Also put the downloaded dat file in this folder. Just drag the dat file and drop it on the BMGPX icon and it will automatically convert it and add a gpx file with the same name in the folder. Just take this newly converted gpx file and do the same things with it that you do with your geocaching gpx files. Just make sure to rename the files to something you can remember them by. I use Mapopolis, and GPXSonar on my pocket pc and they work like a charm out in the field. All the information about the benchmark and mapping to it. The best of both worlds. Hope this helps

Maybe CoyoteRed and Sissy can make some kind of gag gift trowel trade item because of this. If Cr & Sissy are reading this, put me down for a few. ROFLMAO! I found a really rusty one in front of my house about a year ago. Its been sitting in my garage ever since. I'm thinkin' TRAVEL BUG! (psst.... stay tuned...) It looks like there are going to be many trowel tb's released soon from reading the posts. Too funny -

I would like to have one of those things attached to all the local gcachers around here vehicles. I could track where they go. That way I could be ftf on every cache, even before they posted -
I started out geocaching by clearing an area of all caches regardless. I now go for the experience and I choose which caches will give me the best experiences, scenery, history, etc. I will pass up caches that are just put out for the sake of numbers with no redeeming qualities that interest me.

I believe I have used all of these in signing logs. Whatever way a person sees fit to sign a log is acceptable in my book (or logbooks).

I also have a dell axim X5 with ppc2002 as do three other friends of mine. We all use Mapopolis with a Holux GM-270 compact flash GPS and keep all of our maps on a sd card. We also use GPX Sonar to keep all of our pocket queries. Mapopolis does have all of the features you asked for and some. You will be able to take gpx pocket querie results and have them show as waypoints on your mapopolis maps afer you convert them using the free utility from mapopolis called GPX2Maplet. You can then make routes to and between waypoints(caches) with autorouting and spoken turn by turn directions. Just make sure to use the Mapopolis Navigator Maps and software for this. Any questions you may have, feel free to contact me. mapopolis has a free trial period to see if you like the program before you buy it.

I believe the little jack you are talking about on the side of the CF GPS is for an optional external antenna. At least this is what the one on mine is for. You can lay your pda on your seat and hook up the optional antenna, then lay the antenna on your dashboard with the five foot cable attached to your cf gps. This gives you better satellite reception for when you are driving. My opinion on CF vs Bluetooth is one of preference and maybe necessity. These are the questions you need to ask yourself. If your PDA (mine is a dell axim 5) has both a cf slot and a sd slot, then you can use the sd slot for memory (maps) and the cf slot for your gps card without any problems. If you only have one cf slot and no other, then does your pda have a built-in bluetooth or do you have to use a cf bluetooth card in order to have bluetooth capability. If you have to use a cf bluetooth, then you still don't have an option for the maps and mapping programs except for the built in memory. With a cf gps that runs off of your pda's battery, you will only have to keep up with one piece of equipment as opposed to two pieces if you use a separate bluetooth gps. Granted battery life is better on the separate bluetooth gps, but how long do you plan on being away from your cars power source at a time. I carry an extra PDA battery for my pda, which is something to consider. You can also use a cf gps with your laptop while traveling. All you need is a $7 pcmia to cf slot adaptor for this. These are just my personal observations and the questions I asked myself before I chose either a pda and a gps for it. LSUFan

I really like those and would appreciate anyone who would email me or post here a link to the word doc, so I can make some myself. We were surrounded by four of our finest the other night when we parked at the end of a road and checked on one of my caches in the local park. I had the Geocacher U brochure with me and showed that to them. They feigned interest and left us to be. I believe if I had this hanging from my rearview, that they wouldn't have even bothered to stay around. Thanks LSUFan

I will definitely second, third, or even fourth the plug for Sissy-n-Cr's store. I have ordered several times from them including last week. All of their products are top-notch. I'm sure they have at least one product that everyone will like and want. I wanted and bought them all. LSUFan

Ahhh Scotland!! Where the men are men and the sheep are nervous. And the easily offended retorts--------- start NOW -
I think this may work for your suggestion. You will use the new bookmark list option that GC just added. Add all of the local caches to your list (or lists according to how many caches). You will need to add new caches to the list as they are activated. When you make this list--check the option that says to notify you when logs are posted to the caches on your list. I know it can be a lot of email with all of the logs that will be posted. This way when a cache is archived on your list, you will receive notification of it--------along with everything else posted too. Just an idea. Feel free to hate it

Ultimate Geocaching Clothes (male)
LSUFan replied to Ghostcat78's topic in General geocaching topics
I'm just trying to think about this situation from a non-geocachers point of view. If I was on a trail in the woods, park, etc. with my family and we saw some guy poking around in the bushes who was wearing a kilt-------------------------Interesting is not going to be the first word that pops in my mind. I have to believe that it would be almost impossible to be discreet and non-suspicious looking while walking in the woods in a kilt, especially if you finish out the outfit with some bagpipes Maybe in Scotland you can pull this off. BlueDeuce got your answer in while I was typing my reply above. Thanks

From the main(first) geocaching.com webpage window, you will have three search for caches options on the top right-hand side of the screen. The second option (underneath search by zipcode) will be search by state. Select which state you want from the drop-down box--highlight the state-- and then click the search button to the right hand side that corresponds with this. Make sure you click the search button beside the SEARCH BY STATE drop-down box and not another one. The next page/window that loads will have a search by city drop-down box on the top left hand side. Highlight which city you are interested in and then click the search city button beside this drop-down box. That should do it for you.
