  1. I too have been AWOL as life just got in the way but was going to try and ease back into this enjoyable pasttime. I am learning what has transpired in my absence and hate to see all my logs gone. It does sour me a bit.   2. Thanks Artman, for the heads up. I am still using several older versions of DSWorld, but am about to upgrade to the latest. I'll see the next time I edit/label photos if I encounter the same thing and let you know....as the photo labeling is one of my favorite things about the software. On a side note, any time I have contacted Malcolm about using DSWorld, he has always been responsive.

  5. I'm jealous already, as I have been wanting to go to Devil's Tower. I don't have a lot I can contribute to as far as intersection stations go, but I did log this one as I really like old buildings and such with the finial being the station. 01/01/1941 by CGS (FIRST OBSERVED) DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1941 (KBJ) STATION IS THE FINIAL ON THE CLAIBORNE PARISH COURTHOUSE DOME. THE BUILDING WAS ERECTED IN 1858, IS ABOUT 80 FEET HIGH, AND IS LOCATED IN THE CENTER OF THE TOWN. https://www.geocaching.com/mark/details.aspx?PID=CQ2976 Being a history buff, I thought the dates were almost prophetic. The courthouse was built the year before the War of Northern Aggression started and the station was observed close to basically a year (Jan 1 -Dec 7) before we entered WW II.
  6. I am planning a trip to the World War I National Museum and Liberty Memorial Monument in Kansas City this summer with # 1 son. I was checking nearby benchmarks to see if anything was close, and lo and behold, the Liberty Monument is an intersection station. I don't usually log these, but just may have to with this one, on gc.com. Anyhow, as I reading the station description, it almost seemed like the author (who could have been a WW1 veteran himself) was as impressed with the memorial as I am. What does everyone think, as I don't recall ever reading one with this kind of detail and history in the description?   7. Bill, those are some interesting stories. I remember reading one down here in Louisiana that was using the St. Louis Arch in Missouri as a reference point. They had transposed some coordinate numbers, but it was corrected in short order once the NGS was notified. I actually sent an email to the only person I still know at NOAA since David Doyle retired, who is Malcolm Archer-Shee (the designer of DSWorld). He forwarded it to the appropriate people who have the ability to correct these, if they still have the original information. Further research revealed there are actually four sets, with repeating descriptions on every fourth number.

  10. Yes TillaMurphs, I am fortunate, but some of my fellow denizens and neighbors aren't. This pic is just a mile north of my business, off of the same road. The white you are seeing is the top of a minivan. This was Interstate 20 Wednesday, west of us. Funny thing is, I was just on that same stretch of road less than 24 hours previously when the rain was just starting. We have lost several bridges due to this. I'll check later to see if any of them had benchmarks that may be lost due to repair/replacement.
  11. I don't know if my friends here have been seeing the flooding we are getting in Louisiana since Tuesday evening. In my town, we got aver 23 inches in a few days times. It has flooded many homes and washed out more than a few bridges. Anyhow, what is odd, is we got so much water, so fast, that it made our river flow backwards.   12. I can't say I have ever seen anything remotely close to that, Bill. Thanks for sharing, as tri-stations are my favorites. It just seems more fulfilling to me when you can find an entire set (with azimuth) of marks.
  13. The scaled marks around here usually have +/- 6 seconds on the datasheets, which is over 600 feet. I assumed all scaled datasheets had this disclaimer. I have found scaled marks a lot more than 6 seconds off. CQ0059.The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have CQ0059.an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.

On an aside, if you need an "entire" state of datasheets (and not just individual counties), you can get the state in one swoop. Go here: http://www.ngs.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/datasheet.prl then archived datasheets --- monthly archives--- zip file of state you want The directory will show you the last time the state file was updated (I think all states have been updated to 2015), so you'll know how current the information in the zip file is. Don't let the word "archived" fool you. It is just a backup storage of all the active benchmarks at a given time...and not ones that have been put away or something. Once you download the file and unzip it, you'll have the entire state of your choosing....to use the data how you choose. Many people will need to convert the NGS datasheets to a gpx format before being able to import into programs like GSAK or similar, including GPS units.   15. As I was driving thru my hometown today, I caught myself relooking at benchmarks I have found previously. I seem to do this a lot on many places I know exactly where the mark is at, when I drive by them. It's like I'm vigilantly watching over them for some reason. Does any other of my fellow benchmarkers do the same, or am I just the freak who needs professional counseling?
  16. Howdy Dwayne23, sorry so long in responding but I have been absent from the boards for awhile. Here is how I do it. First off, you are going to need to get each state's benchmarks from the NGS. Their benchmarks each have an individual datasheet, which is going to be a .dat file. Your GPS won't read files like that, and must be converted to a .gpx file. Ok, to get each state's file from the NGS: Go to this link: http://www.ngs.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/datasheet.prl and click on archived datasheets---then monthly archives. Now choose the states zip file you want and download it, and then unzip it. OK, now you need to download a NGS to GPX converter, which you can get here: http://ngs.tsqmadness.com/ngsgpx/index.html After installing this piece of software, you will take each the states NGS file you want to convert and convert it to a GPX file. Once converted (and it will take a while depending on how many datasheets per state), then you just load this gpx file into your Delorme. You will then have all the information for each benchmark. I have a PN-60 but don't know if I have ever actually downloaded benchmark gpx files to it, to know if it will handle that large a gpx file. I usually use my Garmin Nuvi, which you can convert the gpx file to an actual poi file and load all the datasheets into it . What I like about the NUVI and loading to it (beside all the information of the datasheet)is you can set proximity alerts and when driving down the road get an alert/ding when you get within so many feet of a benchmark.
  17. Howdy Kayakbird. Great to see you're back too. I haven't updated to probably the latest version of DSWorld, but the way in 2.10 is to go to stations-published-by state and county-then select the state/county and mark type/stability you wish to see on google earth. Click the NOAA icon at the bottom. The county will load under "temporary places" on the left hand list of google earth. You can click the + sign beside the county name and then select/deselect vertical or horizontal marks to only show one type or the other if you wish. I guess, before I stick my foot in my mouth too much, I should download the latest DSWorld version to see if things have changed. EDIT: Ok I downloaded the recent version to check. It's kind of similar to the above. You go to plot-marks-published- by state and county- then select state/county and mark/stability as well as destroyed and rec marks, then click OK.
  18. I need to add that I sometimes think we all make silly mistakes. I won't mention any names, but there is a chiseled X mark in my area that has a NGS recovery report from a geocacher as follows: STATION DESCRIPTION 'DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 10 1/2 FEET SOUTHEAST OF THE SOUTHEAST RAIL, A 'CHISELED CROSS ON THE TOP OF THE SOUTH CORNER OF THE EAST CONCRETE 'ABUTMENT FOR THE STATION RECOVERY (2003) 'RECOVERY NOTE BY US POWER SQUADRON 2003 'RECOVERED IN GOOD CONDITION. STATION RECOVERY (2011) 'RECOVERY NOTE BY GEOCACHING 2011 'RECOVERED IN GOOD CONDITION. STATION RECOVERY (2012) 'RECOVERY NOTE BY GEOCACHING 2012 'DISK HAS BEEN REMOVED, BUTWHERE THE STEM WAS REMAINS Since it has a 2011 accurate recovery report, I submitted HH2 Coordinates and photos utilizing DSWorld, but no recovery report. The 2012 report was submitted by a geocacher, who I believe must have just made an error in which mark he was reporting.....since a chiseled cross has no disk. I removed the PID and initials, cause I'm not trying to embarrass anyone, but just show that honest mistakes do happen.
  19. I read they were having more of a problem with Power Squadron reporting than anything else. We shouldn't be surprised there, as we tend to also think the same and have discussed it more than a few times here in the benchmark forums. Is anyone here using DSWorld to either submit photographs, hand held coordinates, recovery reports, etc? I have found that an extremely useful tool, and the pics are often updated to the datasheet within just a few days by Malcolm. Here is one where Malcolm has the pics already updated to the datasheet, yet my recovery report is still in the queue. http://www.ngs.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/ds_mark.prl?PidBox=CQ2955 The recovery reports take a few weeks as they go thru a different section of NGS, but the datasheet is updated with all the corrections that you note on the recovery report submittal .......examples of which are the stamping; HH2 coordinates if applicable; whether the mark is now projecting, recessed, or flush; and more. I have noticed something with my recent recovery reports, as the NGS did truncate some of the text, which could have been considered redundant with the other fields of the DSWorld recovery report. An example would be where I stated the mark was now recessed X amount of inches below the surrounding ground level. I also entered that information in the DSWorld part asking about the marks relation to surrounding ground level. The datasheet was updated reflecting that aspect, but the recovery report was truncated to take out the text stating the same. http://www.ngs.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/ds_mark.prl?PidBox=CQ1110 Same thing here where I updated the recovery report setting code to state the reset was in a pipe where the original datasheet stated it was in a concrete setting. The NGS updated the datasheet to reflect this, but truncated where I also stated it, from the text report. http://www.ngs.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/ds_mark.prl?PidBox=CQ1108 This is another reason I like DSWorld so much, is all the recovery report fields you can verify or update to reflect the marks scaled coordinates, setting codes, stampings, relation to surrounding ground surface, etc. The reason I state all of this is maybe the NGS is aware of some of this "silly log" stuff and is being more selective on what is on the datasheets....but this is just a supposition on my part with no factual basis.

  23. I talked to my friend about his recovery report for tri-station SICARD today. He said he didn't report anything beside the main station, and he even remembers checking on it about six months later, and reading his recovery report where everything was fine. It makes me wonder if the word 'destroyed' was parsed later on down the road by NGS computers/programmers and erroneously flagged for a destroyed station (which it isn't).

  25. Houston, we have a problem. I was in the geocaching group that recovered Sicard. I was teaching some friends how to recover tri-stations with this one. I encouraged my friend who lives near it to submit his first NGS recovery report on it, instead of me doing it. RM 1 was indeed destroyed, as we found a piece of the disk separated from it's setting. My friend stated such in his recovery report. I was wondering if he might have submitted a destroyed report for the reference mark 1 (if it had a separate PID), and it mistakingly got flagged for the tri-station instead. I'll call him and see.................but SICARD is there, and I'll guarantee it. Maybe our ninja Dave Doyle will read this and can help. Thanks for finding this tosborn, or I might have never known. Two big thumbs up of approval.
