  1. I leave (sometimes) a Prayer Stone, and a poem about it. Pictures will follow..............as soon as I can find the picture. Thumper Found it Prayer Stone
  2. Slim Pickens was a movie star, at least the Slim Pickens I knew. He and I lived in a little town in CA (old gold rush town of Columbia) and I went to his house on several occasision, and yes you are right he would not fit in a cache. However I don't believe I ever heard him sing, heck he could hardly talk some of the times we were together, you know too much booze. And back on the topic, yes I have had to take something big out of a cache and leave something small just to make room in the cache. The funny thing was what I left was a lot better than what I took. 3. Ditto the others on not using ArmorAll. If you want something to really stick wipe the area with denatured alcohol, Isoprople has an oil residue. Go to your local RC (radio controlled) hobby shop and get a roll of SERVO TAPE, Bolinks is the best, It will sick real good to many surfaces. To get it back off use some dental floss as a string saw under the item and cutting through the servo tape. Wished I had the bucks to step up to the CS. Thumper
  4. OK....you guys made me do it........this is crap (sorry warn meter). Why not just put hand granades or tnt or some other thing that is NOT spefically stated as an item not to be put in caches in one an "feel good" that you did something not specfically in the rules/guidlines. Gee whiz......grow up....get a life........and all the other stuff that goes with it. Once again I have wasted my time on those with little or no common sense. Thumper
  5. Read the whole darn thread.........boy what a bunch of crud (just saved the ole warn meter). I just went out, couple of days ago, and scored some pretty nice little knives with caching in mind. Wished I had read this thread first, I now totally agree that they SHOULD NOT be used in caches. Rules no rules, guidlines or no guildlines, I dont care, common sense is the issue here. I cannot return the knives, so I will have spares for years, why sharpen them, just toss it and get a new one out, hey I just saved myself some time, cool. I also got some nice screwdrivers (six tips) and some little shears that would be great to have in your geokit, I am a little concerned about the shears but I think they will be alright. I am new to the sport and really would not like to be known as the person that killed geocaching in the state of Oklahoma because I thought that I needed to put an object into a cache that would cause harm, regardless of anothers abilities to use or teach the use of said object. Sorry just puttin in my one cents worht, I'm retired and on a fixed income so I can't afford two cents worth. Thumper
  6. Not sure I can help but I will give it a go. I have the etrex and a laptop without the serial port, I got the USB to serial cable with the software. I plugged in the cable to the USB port, into the serial cable for the GPSr, and turned the GPSr on. Then I booted up the laptop and it saw the "New Hardware" and asked for the software. At that point I put the CD in the drive and had the "Wizzard" load it. The laptop then could communicate with the GPSr via the USB to Serial cable. My computer saw it as Com7. I use Delorme SA 2004, so I had to change the GPSr to NMEA interface to get it to see the program, I then have to change back to the Garmin format for the EasyGPS to transfer data. I hope I helped and didn't confuse. Thumper
  7. Geo: I went through the Trimble Tutorial thing, lots of good info to be had in there, it finally mentioned WAAS WAAY into the show, but did not mention much about its usefullness in our application. Thanks for the link. Thumper This is a Pseudo Random Post, I just loved the Pseudo Random Code thing.
  8. Just the right kind of stuff, and the reason I have not closed this thread, thank you EraSeek for your post. GEO what the hell are you on now what does a.a.a.a. and civilian company disclaimers have to do with the subject of this thread? I guess I missed the point or the humor in it. Next you will want to quote the price of tea in China, or something. Just bustin your chops GEO. Go for it. Thumper
  9. So I get two guys punching each other out over crud and I feel like closing the thread just to stop the abuse, then somebody comes along with a positive post that makes me want to keep it open. We all (including the lurkers) are trying to glean little bits of knowledge out of the reading of these boards, threads, and posts. In that light lets see if we can share our collective knowledge without being abusive or for that matter so defencesive. My boss, and good friend, once told me to look at the importance in ten years of the issue at hand, then treat it accordingly at this time. I think that may be good advice. So keep the good applicable information coming, and a little humor does not hurt either. Thumper PLAY NICE
  10. This is so cool, a boxing match with no blood. Just kidding. I agree that it seems we have determined the WAAS is not now at it's full potential, maybe in the future it will be there. Then most of this will just be academic (dang it you guys made me look up a big word). Thumper
  11. The Cheeseheads: thanks for doing that for me, and thanks for the highlited ones, a real ego booster. But I still don't know how y'all are doing it Thanks Thumper
  12. I am not a lurker, I usally jump in with both feet........in my mouth. I actually kind of like the differing views of the posters, but then again I like to watch two guys in the ring beating the crud out of each other. I like to see a good football game with lots of hard hits and even an occasional fight. I like to see two people in conflict over a point, it seems they bring out the smallest of points to prove themselves right. Besides, if they are fighting with each other they are leaving me along. It is kind of a self defence issue with me. I just look to see who has the most valid point, and discard the other. Thumper This board is just a small snippet of life.........get used to it because it will probably not change too soon.
  13. I looked and there is about 130,000 for Thumper, but I don't know how to break it down to the way y'all are posting it. So give a dumb bunny a clue. Thumper
  14. I would love to partner up with you, but I am afraid the commute from Oklahoma would be a bit much. However, if you offered a room and a meal or two I would love to see your part of the world, I here it is awesome. I have a friend in the RC world that lives "down under" and we have a standing invitation for room and board if either of us gets to the others backyard. Thumper
  15. nincehelser: Call me simple if you want but I understood all of your post, and it seems to confirm what most if not all of the math whizes and research guys have said. Which is a GPSr with or without WAAS will work just fine for or hobby/sport. Therefore, if you have a GPSr without WAAS you will be about as likly to be within the "put your GPSr away and use your eyes" range as you would be if it did have WAAS. In addition, you do not need to sell your GPSr and upgrade to one with WAAS, unless you are ready for an upgrade due to the age or useablility of your present GPSr, and just want a GPSr with other goodies and just happens to have WAAS. I better quit now before I confuse myself again, beside here comes the guys with my white jacket and medications. Thumper
  16. I am a little late on this subject, but I will let you know what I use anyhow. I have a pack made by Galco in Phoenix AZ. It is for a concealed carry purpose (SW Mod 12) but it works really well for the SW and a lot if zippered places to put battreies, swag, GPSr, and a lot of other stuff. I like it because I don't have to look for all my stuff before I go out to cache or any other thing. Maybe some won't agree but I am into security as well as a good time. As fo water and lunch and all the other stuff, I let the wifie tote that. Thumper
  17. crzycrzy: thanks for the option. But I have gleaned a little bit of knowledge by reading the posts. I have applied a small amount of "huh" to some of it and a lot of "huh" to a lot of it, but still have picked up some good points. Besides as I said in another post I am not the only person that is reading these post, maybe they are also getting a little out of it. If it remains friendly and informitive I will let it run its course. I appreciate all those that have put effort into answering this for me......and others. Thumper
  18. Maybe she nodded off, and fell on the post this key. This is entirely to much fun, thanks Carolyn. Thumper
  19. As Yogi would say "Deja Vu, all over again". Thumper
  20. CordedTires wrote: Even the SSYKW's had to learn these things at some time in their life. None of this is nature, it is all nutured. I love to see forums like this and people that are not afraid to tell stories on themselves, or ask the "newbie" questions. You must understand that a lot of people, myself included, cruse these threads learning answers to question we have but had not asked. So, if the question is answered in a reasonable manner by somebody with the correct knowledge it is a benefit to many, and not just the asker. I am fairly new to this sport and this board, but I have a lot of experiance on other boards and have never felt bad about a newbie asking questions. If the research has been done, ie the search utility, and the skim the threads routine is done, and the answer is not found you can bet others are/will be looking at the answers. And a great big thanks goes out to those that take the time to help out the new people in the sport, it will serve to only make the sport stronger. I'm stepping off the soap box now....... Thumper PS You can delete the duplicate post very easily....read mrkablooey's post.
  21. If you have or are starting a SI is there a place to register or list it? Thumper
  22. Boy oh boy, I am kind of sorry I asked the first question. However, because I usually don't learn as fast as maybe I should, I have two more questions for the distinguished panel 1.) What are you guys smoking? 2.) Are you sharing? Just trying to lighten up the thread a bit, but then maybe its my medications kicking in. Thumper PS it has been an education even though some (read most) of it is over my head...................waaaaaay over my head.
  23. nincehelser: Please post your findings here, I would like to see what y'all came up with. Thumper
  24. GEE WHIZ, play nice guys! But I see points on both sides. I will stick with the eTrex for now, and maybe consider a WAAS compatable unit later when I upgrade. Thumper
