  1. I agree with this part. They should at least show up so someone who is not a PM can see ahead of time if the spot where they want to place a cache is already taken or not. Wow! This is a very good point. That is just not fair to the BM and one shouldn't have to pay $30 to ensure that one is within the saturation guidelines. I wouldn't feel any differently than if I'd done the same thing only to find out a leg of a mystery cache was in the same area.
  2. Pffft, no match for a Texas Jackalope! My most dangerous animals were some water moccasins and the coral snake that didn't like me bushwhacking near him and chased me back to the trail.
  3. Nope. And being discussed over here: http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=274475&view=getnewpost&hl=&fromsearch=1
  4. http://www.geocaching.com/geico/
  5. Actually, you won't this time: "Request a Free trackable Gecko and we'll mail you a brand new, un-activated one (while supplies last) as long as you agree to place it in a geocache and help it get started on a journey."
  6. I don't have a camera with me today, so I can't grab a pic, but let's see, there are the geocoins and geocaching mug sitting on my bookshelf combined with the EarthCache Master sticker, a travel bug dog tag, and the geocoin, pin, and name tag from the 2009 Texas Challenge stuck on my bulletin board. Of course, I work in an office by myself, so no one would ever happen by and find out I'm a geocacher.
  7. GCKGF2 40 redirectors...it took me quite a few trips to finally slay the MONSTER, but it was a blast.
  8. Yes, but when it's hot, I can hop in the pool instead of waiting for my extremities to thaw out. My range is probably 30F (in a snowstorm) to 105F.
  9. The only extraction tool I've used besides the "shake it out" method is the cap to a pen. I usually don't carry extra tools if I'm urban caching and haven't had a problem so far.
  10. An ALR is something you had to perform in ADDITION to finding the cache. This one just has you performing actions to find the location.
  11. How are logging the "punches" on real caches different than the pocket caches that people used to bring to events and allow people to log the real cache wherever it was located? (See the controversy over Geowoodstock IV that led to a lot of cache archiving over this) If find multi-logging events to track temporary caches silly, but at least it's tied only to that event and not real caches out in the field (which you didn't find). There was a lot of comment in this thread over similar practices: The New Numbers Game And Jeremy weighed in with his thoughts on the pocket caches.
  12. Nothing new, really.... After pocket caches and GW4 And I noticed that my post toward the end of that thread still sums up my feelings every time I hear about things like this. "I've seen it mentioned before....but why must everything you do "earn" you a smiley? I've never really cared what others do to count their smileys (giving away bonus smileys, etc)...but I do have a problem when you're abusing the use of listed caches to do it. This isn't going to take away from my enjoyment of this activity really, but I sure can't see the justification in congratulating anyone for a "milestone" any more. Whatever accomplishment they might have stood for, they're now just a count of "something you did", but maybe not found a geocaching.com cache. "
  13. Very classic! Wait, what? those things lift up and you could hide a cache there! INGENIOUS! I'm going to try this!
  14. I probably average $10-20 on a regular size cache, but I created one that probably cost $100 in materials too (which I need to go pull and replace). I haven't another one in the works that will end up around $75 or so too. In the end, I think you have to look at the expenditure like gambling: you'll hopefully get some personal satisfaction out of it, but know that you could just lose it all too. If you're up for the risk, other cachers do appreciate creative hides.
  15. What are those weird bar codes
  16. Forget the pacifier, I just want a GPS! And yes, my newborn got a TB and was "discovered" at her first night cache as a 1 month old.
  17. I don't think a cache hider should screw anything into another object without permission. From the guidelines: http://support.Groundspeak.com/index.php?pg=kb.page&id=304 "Geocache placements do not deface or destroy public or private property. Geocaches are placed so that the surrounding environment is safe from both intentional or unintentional harm. Keep both natural and human-made objects safe. No object or property may be altered to provide a hiding place, clue, or means of logging a find." Key point: No object or property may be altered to provide a hiding place
  18. What's the point of hiking? You just walk somewhere. What's the point of golf? You just hit a little ball. What's the point of going to a movie? You just sit there. Geocaching is a fun activity where I get to spend time outdoors, get some exercise, and yes, get to play with technology. I like finding new places, parks, historic markers, views, etc. that I may not have known existed.
  19. But seems it was "stolen" long ago: GC16XY3 This isn't an OC.com issue at this point.
  20. Where did you see the user's email? The only entry I see in the GPX file is for a support email address: <email>support@OpenCaching.com</email> I don't know if this site will get any traction, but it's an interesting departure from Groundspeak's approach as a "steward" of the game (where they make the rules in what they consider the best interest of the game) and Garmin's approach of giving everything away and it's one big open area. Since Garmin doesn't depend on the "data" as a revenue source, they're free to open access to everyone (APIs for 3rd party developers, etc).
  21. GeoLex is your friend. http://geolex.locusprime.net/ And I've never heard of UPL. Logs or Leaves would be my guess.
  22. Tombstone Placed 9/26/2000 Un-Original Stash Placed 10/22/2000 CenTex Prime Placed 12/17/2000 And already plotting the drive for Mingo some time in the future.
