  1. Geocaching led me to purchase a GPS with Christmas money. I haven't upgraded yet, but I have my eye on the new Garmin GPSMAP-60C with it's dedicated geocaching mode and 56 MB of memory. Boo-Yah! Offroute GPS
  2. Prairie Dog is my CB handle and nickname among my friends. Though some just call me "PD". The 76 comes from "1976" which is the year I was born. I'm a bicentennial baby!
  3. I haven't really found any caches that offer a spectacular view or take me somewhere new. I very rarely explore an area. For me it's about the numbers. This a way to challenge me physically and mentally and I try to get as many caches per week as I can. Some people like to explore and some like to boost their numbers.
  4. I agree with you that a local army surplus store would be more likely to have a geocaching section depending on the demand for items and the interest of the community. A large chain store might be able to sell GPSr's and accessories at a better price than a local outdoor store. It would be pretty cool to see Groundspeak products available in stores.
  5. I'm just throwing this out there. How long before big chain stores add a geocaching aisle to their sporting goods section? What do you think they will sell there? I could see them stocking GPSr's, ammo boxes, camouflage tape, custom tupperware containers, and maybe Groundspeak caching accessories. In the right market someone could make a nice profit.
  6. I want to hide my first cache in a nearby city park. There are no caches in this park yet. Do I need to obtain permission from the park management before placing a cache there? If so what's the best way to explain geocaching and ask permission? This park is open to the public during daylight hours. Feedback appreciated.
  7. OMG! Those are really good. I keep a small day pack in the car with all my geo goodies. It has GPS, compass, flashlight, leatherman, cache page print-outs, trash bags, pens, small notebook, extra batteries, carabiners, and small trade items. This way I'm always ready to go find one. I'm such a dork!
  8. Out of 50 found caches I've never seen anything official. We like to hide tupperware around here. I'm addicted to geocaching now and I want to support Groundspeak. This message board and Geocaching.com are wonderful sites that are well maintained. By purchasing from Groundspeak you help support these sites. I've purchased official stickers, logbooks, pencils, and patches. When I hide my first ammo box it's going to be full of goodies. So spend a few $$ to help support a hobby that we all love.
  9. Great, thanks! This message board is one of the best I've seen. It's fast, easy to navigate, and everyone here is so darn nice. I can't imagine the "behind the scenes" effort that goes into all of this. Keep up the good work y'all!
  10. I started Geocaching right after Christmas and in 2 months I've found nearly 50 caches within 15 miles of my home coordinates. It's time for me to support the wonderful people at Geocaching.com and Groundspeak. Can I use someone else's PayPal account (different email) for me to sign up as a premium member? How will Geocaching.com know the $30.00 is for me and not my friend?
  11. I see users have a picture beside their posts in the forums. I think these are called avatars. These small pictures have a caption that says something like "Geocacher" or "Cache 4 life". Well my caption says "tadpole". Why does it say that? Is there any way to change the caption to something cool like"rock out" or "Trogdor the burninator"? thanks.
  12. What if the NGS benchmark is part of a water tower or on the private property of a nearby airport or other potential target for terrorism? In the case of the water tower I took a picture from outside the security fence. What about security issues and terrorism? When is it not a good idea to post accurate coordinates, elevation, and a photo? Any feedback would be appreciated.
