    Welcome fellow Cacher! Welcome to the addiction!

     

    My philosophy has always been to spend the least amount of money and have the most amount of fun. If a free soft pack cooler gets the job done, then you'll have more money to buy gas for your geomobile. You may want to check out a local Army/Navy Surplus store as they have some pretty neat stuff for cheap. Also consignment stores will sometimes have used backpacks. Think about the type of caching you will do the most and select a bag or pack based on those circumstances.

     

    I use a shoulder sling pack for urban caching/short hikes, park and grabs (car), and caching by bicycle. My bag holds water bottle, GPS'r, trade items, geocoins, travel bugs, pens, notepad, camera, multi tool, knife, chewing gum, flashlight, headlamp, batteries, chapstick, hand sanitizer/wet wipes, sunglasses, baseball cap, and bicycle repair tools.

     

    Now, there have been many threads on here about backpacks and what people carry in them. Some people have dumped out the contents of their packs and photographed them. With a little searching you can find these threads and the bevy of information in them. Here's a few to start.

    Here is a link to the Magellan Explorist 300 owners manual. This the For the North American model and the manual is written in English.

    Navigate to page 33 of the PDF and read about marking a point of interest not at your present location.

    Hope this helps. This model will also connect to your PC via a USB port and special cable.

    I'd be wary of caching or placing a cache in an area where there are hunters and tree stands. However you said people camp in the same area so it must be somewhat safe. Unless the hunters are doing all the camping and maybe you are a hunter/camper/trapper/fisher...geocacher?

    Um... I'm not sure what to think. It's the hunting part that makes me nervous

    Those Glo sticks are cool, I especially like keychain carabiners, I hang them on the outside of my backpack and attach small and light weight stuff with them.

    A couple of times I've found a homemade micro cache container that someone left with instructions for the next cacher to place it in the field. I'm not just talking about a film canister either. This was glued together and had components from a hardware store. It had a magnet inside to attach to something metal.

    It was really cool because it already had a log scroll and little ziploc bag.

    I ended up bringing it to an event cache and traded it for a couple of TB's.

    UTM is a different datum or number set for the exact same location on Earth. UTM is still a longitude and latitude, but it is a different way of displaying the coordinates. Geocaching.com uses the WGS84 datum.

    However I can't tell you why this is or why different datums exist. Just wait a few minutes and someone on here can explain the technical stuff.

    I'll keep checking back because I want to know too.

    Explorist 500 New Hotness

    I got my new Magellan Explorist 500 yesterday. The UPS guy came later than usual, like eight o'clock at night and dropped it on my doorstep. I was in the middle of cooking so I put the box to one side. This morning was like Christmas had come early for me. :D

    I ordered one of the nice bundle deals from TigerGPS. This was a very good deal in my opinion.

    In the box was the GPS'r, rechargeable battery, mapping software, car mount, car charger, PC cable, and home charger. Only thing not included is a lanyard and carrying case.

    First impressions are good. I'm amazed at how small the GPS'r is. I like the color screen, too. Cold start time is much faster than on some of the older Magellan models. This one had my fix in a little over a minute. I can't wait to start using this new unit.

    But, what will become of the Sportrak Map? :P It's my old reliable. We've found almost 300 caches together. I'm deeply connected to this trusty old unit. It's why I love Magellan products. I think I will hunt 6 more caches with the Sportrak so I will have 300 finds with it. Then I'll start carrying the new Explorist 500.

    I can read the text & view the wmv_2, but the wmv_1 gives me the viewer with this message "The channel does not support the stream format". So .... I can see how to acess the maps in the GPSR but can't view the video on how to do the technical part, gittin' 'em in there.

    The latest version of QuickTime Player for Mac OS will support playback of Windows Media files. There is also an application called Flip 4 Mac that installs as part of the QT Player and let's you export a Windows Media File into another format.

    I've never experienced anything like what you are describing. I certainly hope that I never will. I guess anything is possible, though. Remember that Geocaching is still relatively new and growing in popularity. There will always be skeptics. There will always be what if situations in anything that you do in life. You could be shopping in a grocery store when an armed madman storms in and starts firing a gun. You could be hit by an 18 wheeler carrying explosive rocket fuel on your way to work.

    Geocaches aren't bobby trapped. Why worry? Have fun.
