  1. Smoochnme....hey so since you appear to be one of the first to have done the Fellowship Cache and to be planning to complete the remaining 3.... Tell me what are your 3 favorite colors and a favorite pastime..........Seems to me fishing? I ask because I have been adding to my stash of fabrics lately and I thought that it might be nice to add some personal touches to the signature quilts for the Tolkien Virtual....... I'de like to work one up so that I can post it on this thread and people can get an idea of what they will look like........How about if I post a picture of what yours could look like? I just finished the extra touches on the Hobbit cache.....I plan on submitting it the night of the 6th so that it will be up and ready on the 7th...Right now the area that it is in is filled with trillium Dx "Have you no news on your travels?" the Book of fairy & folk tales of Ireland (1888)
  2. Hey Hawkeye, Your fame continues .... I was caching this weekend in Ottawa Canada (handing off the signature squares for the Canadian geoquilt). I was sporting my usual cache bag to which I have attached your tag (one I found while in NC)....... It was noticed right off! And greeted with many a smile! Ottawa was awesome! Did you know that they have bears? Lions and Tiger and Bears Oh My! Dx "Have you no news on your travels?" the Book of fairy & folk tales of Ireland (1888)
  3. Hey! The first geoquilt was a wonderful project all the way around! I really enjoyed every minute of it! So now after a bit of a lapse, I am working on a a new project. Tolkien/Token quilt....ok I just couldn't help it the play on words is too cool..... For the past several months I have have been reading the Tolkien books. Then I decided that it would be great to do a quilt along with this.....So to correspond with each of the 4 books that go with the series (The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings) I have made 4 blocks that once singed, will come together and form a Tolkien quilt.........One block is now in the Fellowship of the Ring Cache in Erie PA...... Another block will go in our Hobbit cache...to be posted on May 7th...butterfly girls 11th birthday (I like how her bday related to Bilbo celebrating his 11ty first birthday at the start of the Lord of the Rings). This will be placed in our home town of Akron, NY. Then 2 more blocks will go in the caches that correspond to the remaining Lord of the Rings books: The Twin Towers and the Return of the King...to be posted in PA when the movies are released...... The Token part is this.... for each cacher that signs all 4 blocks....I will send their own signature quilt......100 squares sewn into a little quilt(it should measure somewhere around 36" to 40" and be suitable to hang on a wall or lay on a small table) and ready for you collect signatures while on your own adventures.....There will be a virtual cache that corresponds to this. I've already started cutting little squares and gathering extra material.... I posted this project on the General thread earlier. I'm hoping that people with frequent flyer miles will use them to discover some most interesting caches and perhaps be a bit more enticed by "earning" their own quilt once they have completed the series of 4. We in the Northeast will not have as far to go. Plus I'm wondering if it will be possible to get a large response....Hey! I'm the one whose doing the sewing......my saving grace is that the last cache won't be placed for at least 2 years....I hope! Hey what's the most that I could get...10...maybe 20....perhaps more than 20...eekkk I'd better oil up the machine!! 4. Hey! The first geoquilt was a wonderful project all the way around! I really enjoyed every minute of it! So now after a bit of a lapse, I am working on a few more projects. Canadian Geoquilt. This project is up and running. It is posted under the regional section...I handed off the squares while in Ottawa this weekend. That was a great time! Event Quilt....I will be going to my first event cache on June first (at the Rochester and Syracuse, NY area get together). I will have with me a completed quilt that can be signed there and given out.....I just need to quilt that one.....sunshine and shadows pattern.....The cachers get to sign in the Sunshine. Tolkien/Token quilt....ok I just couldn't help it the play on words is too cool..... For the past several months I have have been reading the Tolkien books. 5. Hi! So now all the quilt squares are in Canada. I believe that this quilt will be most beautiful when it is finished. Even without signatures this particular pattern looks great. It has a way of showing you a different design as you move your eyes.......And with all the signatures it will be that much better!! Then each view will display the signatures of many cachers who are just as complex. Speaking of terriffic, our trip to Ottawa to hand off the squares was just that! Wow!! Quite honestly the very best sight seeing we have ever done!! Great people, amazing sites, group caching, and a very beautiful city. Interestingly, my kids hands down liked the tour of Parliment the best. Butterfly girl even stood up in front of her class, showed then pictures that we'de taken and told all about her adventures while proudly sporting the Canadian pin that 300mag gave her. Thanks Cliffy and 300mag for making us feel so welcome and showing us how to cache Canadian... I'LL be sure to stock up on licorice and arrange for US cows to be available should you chance a visit our way. Dx and the Hiltonclan (ps...I was told that I "sound" much older than I am .... So I have added a px to my prof. Fearless took it while we cached with "THE GROUP") "Have you no news on your travels?" the Book of fairy & folk tales of Ireland (1888)

  7. Well I had thought 3 months .....but I would really like to leave it up to Cliffy and 300mag as they have offered to do all the "leg" work for me......And actually this works out great as I can work on other projects......the blocks are done, wrapped in gold ribbon and waiting to be handed off.....so tonight I finished a signature item to send to the geocaching home office and I'm pinning a quilt for a caching event. I did a cache near home today and stopped at a quilt cafe/shop before hand....Man the material was expensive....so glad that I have been working on my stash of fabrics. Iv'e found great deals on quality fabrics...really cuts the cost down and lets me enjoy making up the blocks and seeing how the project runs........ I'de like to leave the dispursion and collection part to Cliffy and 300mag...this way I can continue to do projects, focus on the sewing part and think about new ones......... BTW majbach...thanks for the recognition...I really like doing these projects and caching. It just all fits! and makes me smile DX "Have you no news on your travels?" the Book of fairy & folk tales of Ireland (1888)

  9. So will the calvary wear those great red uniforms? Now that would be something to see...esp when ou consider that I live in a very small; Normal Rockwell type town in Western NY.... If you get 854 responses I'll have to make more blocks.......maybe 2 quilts? Dx "Have you no news on your travels?" the Book of fairy & folk tales of Ireland (1888)

  11. Hey! How about the First Geoquilt Award (see "The Geoquilt has been presented to Jeremy! topic" ..the last post was on 3/21/02...the project was started under a thread in this forum back in October......over 400 geocachers participated......so how's that for an award from your peers/adoring fans and world wide participants......... FYI I am working on another geoquilt in Canada right now and also on a theme/Tolkien quilt cache. Dx (award maker) "Have you no news on your travels?" the Book of fairy & folk tales of Ireland (1888)

  13. Blues preach..... You're right after a while the scratches don't hurt anymore. I walked through a wild rose bush area last weekend.......!ithin 5 minutes I was just numb to it all.....but two hours after caching the "novicaine" wore off! Info sponge.......so the couple is suited up (?) for tick reduction. I've hear if you hike sans clothing the ticks have nothing to stick to....or do they....censor strips. One wonders. 14. majbach....sounds like a great idea to me! I really like how this is all shaping up!! I've finished all the blocks, I'm wrapping them in packs of 10 (ok maybe too much time on my hands but the kids were all out with friends so I filled in the spaces with working on this). Thanks again for the map...can't wait to get the blocks in the "field" Dx "Have you no news on your travels?" the Book of fairy & folk tales of Ireland (1888)

  16. Hey...I'm a bit late in responding but if you want to know what a tick looks like....... 17. Hey! The blocks are all completed. I will count them today and put them in a zip lock..... Do you want the exact number or a few extras? I can always use less than needed and then the quilt is finshed with unsigned blocks that can be signed at a latter date....as it goes to caching events...ect... What is more difficult is if I get too many signed blocks.....I suppose that I could put some of those on the back....but what cacher would like to be segregated to the back? I also received a new quilt book yesterday and it has a section on signing blocks...pens to use...how to beef up your lettering so I'll send off a copy of those pages to Cliffy and 300mag...I also have a book on using photo transfere paper....I'll copy some of that for those of you that want elaborate signatures........ Can't wait to meet up with my Canadian cacher friends, hand off the blocks and tour Ottowa!! Dx "Have you no news on your travels?" the Book of fairy & folk tales of Ireland (1888)

  19. Hey....My signature item is a quilt block.....Right now I have a Tolkien theme quilt that I am working on with a cacher in Erie PA....I have the Canadian geoquilt going in Canada...all blocks are made and the fam and I are going on a 6 hour drive next weekend to hand off the blocks (I really like meeting the cachers in charge of the project as we did a month ago when we went to Erie). I also have 5-6 signature blocks that arrived too late to be in jeremy's quilt......I had planned on using them somehow in the next geoquilt but the Canadian one is of an entirely different pattern (see the thread in the Canadian section).. Maybe just a single bock signed by me......Those UK ones are like gold to me as there aren't as many cachers there and I've been to those countries... DxChallenged "Have you no news on your travels?" the Book of fairy & folk tales of Ireland (1888)
  20. Hey! This looks great.......I wish I was more computer literate....but then I wouldn't have time to quilt........ All the blocks are sewn and now I just have to mark them.......I'm glad that I spent the time sewing when I did because now the weather is great and I can at least mark the squares while I sit outside...... This map is really great!! Now I can visuallize where everything is going!! Thanks Majbach! Does anyone know of a there are any tea towels with a Canadian map on them? I have used Irish tea towels and put them on the back of other quilts that I've made......It might be a nice touch for thie quilt as well Dx "Have you no news on your travels?" the Book of fairy & folk tales of Ireland (1888)
  21. Hey........I still like the idea of posting a map of Canada with the locations of the cachers who are participating.........I have a tough time visualizing geographical locations (hey I really am directionally challenged....). My daughter is studying your country in her history class so I thought that I would copy one of her maps......but it would be cool to somehow link a map here or have a central...electric quilt link (as per 300mags idea) with a map that could be updated......... Beauty of a day here........almost too warm.....naw never.......atthe very least the heat will ward off snow!! Dx "Have you no news on your travels?" the Book of fairy & folk tales of Ireland (1888)

  23. I bought my unit for 2 reasons.... 1. I was tired of going geocaching and having to wait back with the slow members of the family while my husband ran off...in a straight line...so he could keep his "fix". 2. I get lost in my own backyard. so when I read the specs on the Garmin V I just had to have it... Well husband has just finished reading all about it and showing it to his buddies (he has a garmin III+ that I bought him for christmas 2 years ago) now it is in my van all the time....so when I haven't a clue on where I am and how to get home...I just turn it on click find home and it beeps each time I need to turn......I love this thing!! 24. Well I've been meaning to do this for a while but of late I've had many reports to do....Those are done and I'm taking a break!! So I thought that I would outline some quilt project stuff, bounce it around and see what everyone thinks........ 1. Block packets. The pattern that I've chosen takes 256 blocks. So this number needs to be devided up and given out. I did this in padded mailers (just after 9/11 with the first project so I made sure post office was ok with everything..I think that we have a postal worker on board again), placed the blocks in ziplock bags with the instructions and a fabric pen. Does everyone want to get their own pen this time? I bought a good one to give to Cliffy and 300mag when I meet up with them....as an example. 2.Who should sign the blocks? On the first project I limited this to just geocachers and their pets. I didn't even allow my in-laws to sign as they had never cached with us...my parents did so they got a square. It is possible, if your family or caching group is large enough, that you could just get together and sign at once. But I still like the idea of only cachers & caching critters (pets had some of the best squares) signing......Heck if anyone else wants to it just takes one cache trip to qualify.... 3. Ways to get blocks signed........These are some of the ways that blocks were signed with the first project.... a. Cache event (was a cool scuba caching event in CA) b. Front Porch Cache....hey I love meeting fellow cachers and I thought this was a novel way to get the blocks signed...the lady even provided brownies. c. Caching group mass signing...a boy scout troop did this. They have a couple of caches in Rochester and when I found one I notified them of my quilt project...so the den got together, requested blocks and signed during a meeting....great art work from them...even aliens..... d. Cache Dash....One lady put a time limit on signing the blocks...people were literally escorted out of the park by policemen as they came after hours to get a block signed. I had several people e-mail me after that pleading for their own block as by the time they got to the cache it was gone (pulled once all the blocks were signed). e. Typical cache placement....I had blocks in my 2 caches and actually had a few requests from people who wanted to place them in their own. f. SASE with note....One guy in Washington lost all 12 blocks then asked for more...(of course I sent them to him) he ended up making a magnent with our names and the cache project on it...people who signed a block got a magnent...they took these home in the envelope he provided with my address. They signed and several wrote me a personal note...that was fun... 4. Dealine....Once I got the blocks out with the original geoquilt...it took another 3 months to get them all signed......I did not establish a dealine at the beginning of the project so some were returned right away and some, even after I moved the dealine 2-3 times, came in after the quilt was done (I have blocks from the UK still). So how about a deadline of the end of July..7/31? 5. Giveaway...I really want to give this quilt to one of you guys...Originally I said that a name would be selected from those who mailed the blocks back to me......but if Cliffy and 300mag are the only ones mailing them back to me...my pool would be of 2...which I'm sure is ok with Cliffy and 300mag....but how about a pool from the people that signed up on this forum to place the blocks...what are we up to 10? How does all this sound? Cliffy... Beaver tail.....I had Buffalo when I lived in South Dakota...but I don't think that will even come close...But I can't wait for the trip!! And meeting up with you both.... Dx "Have you no news on your travels?" the Book of fairy & folk tales of Ireland (1888)
