  1. Hey! So I didn't realize how many new cachers there are out there.........I should have posted more details......Sorry here are some of the names that the previous and current caching quilts have been posted under..... The Original geoquilt was started back in October and the thread was called ....Quilting bee/cache.. It's delivery and picture of the finished project with the man himself is posted under the thread....The Geoquilt has been presented to Jeremy... The current project is in the Canada section under...Canadain Geoquilt....... I also have a Tolkien theme quilt going with a mini signature quilt going to all cachers who finish all 4 caches in the theme (The Fellowship of the Ring cache...is in Erie PA and out THE HOBBIT - BAG END CACHE is here in Akron NY (the other 2 will be in PA when those movies are released)....I teamed up with the gamehedge rangers to did that one...For cachers in the NW parts of PA and Western NY...and those cachers who have extra frequent flyer miles...... So the geoquilt 2...... The first one I bought all the mailers...sent out all the packets and sewed everything...... That took a lot of time and was the only project I had going.....so this time I would like one cacher from each region (those listed in the threads below) to send and retrieve...by that I mean 1. I would send them a group of blocks....around 50. 2. They would find cachers in their area who want to be involved in the project and mail them 5 to 10 blocks (this would depend on the number of people who request the blocks). 3. These senders would be responsible for providing...A mailer to send out the blocks (the post office preferres the padded kind which are cheapest at Walmart around .50 each. So you would need to buy around 5 mailers. 4. These blocks then would be placed in caches to be signed (a good description of this is on the Canadian Geocache thread). The person who sends out the packets would be the one responsible for making sure they are turned in...by the dealine....which will be established should we get enough of a response...... 5. Once the blocks are signed they would be returned to the person who sent them. 6. All blocks would be sent back to me by a dealine...lets say the end of August..... 7. One of my thoughts is to put the names of the cachers who volunteer to send out and collect the blocks....in a hat .... the person from this group whose name is drawn would then receive the quilt....... Anyway......that's what I'm thinking about....... Does this anwer most of the questions? I just a new quilt book today...on a quilter who gives all her quilts away........ 2. Hey! so it is bleak and rainy here.....just right for sewing.......... I can't wait to get sewing on this quilt......it really seems to be moving along nicely....... I trimmed all the left over blocks from this quilt and plan on sewing something together for the guys who have helped out....... This leaving the coordination part to other people has left me with much more time to sew..... The enthusiasim here is great!! 4. Ok.....so I guess by the rating (at the time I posted this it was a 1) and the response this is a no go........ I realize that I didn't post how this relates to geocaching so I can do this here but will pan the idea of another quilt. How it relates..... 1. Geocaching is a way to discover new places and at the same time face a challenge. If you are successfull at facing this challenge....you trade from a cache box and record your find in a log book....The quilt squares serve as another way to log your find. 2. Tangible log. Signature blocks can be placed in geocaches around the US and anywhere else that requests them. Theses blocks can then be placed in a cache and the finders sign them. Once completed the quilt itself becomes a tangible log that will be viewed for many years to come.... 3. Joint project. The quilts that I am doing now and the one in the past (this was delivered to jeremy in March) represented a joint effort between many cachers. They were placed by geocachers, signed by geocachers, returned and then sewn together by a geocacher. Once completed the group....helped to decide who to give it to. 4. Giving back to a sport. I truely enjoy this sport and also quilting. So this is my way to give back. I have no intention of receiving any monetary reimbursment for these.....and to quite honest the projects themselves have been a source of joy that reimbursment would only tarnish.......I have always given the quilts I make away......... Anyway.....enjoy your day.....very bleak, cold and rainy here.......so no trails for me today...... DxChallenged "Have you no news on your travels?" the Book of fairy & folk tales of Ireland (1888)

  6. Hey! I currently have 6 quilts on my work list....I finished one yesterday and 4 have all the blocks sewn (3 are for the Canadian Geoquilt, one is components for the Tolkien theme quilt and one doesn't have a destination yet).....so I was thinking.........Is there any interest in starting another geoquilt. We in the NOrtheast are in prime time caching. I had 7 hits on my caches last weekend and all were new cachers. I think that the Buffalo NY area may see a rise in the number of caches here....... Anyway.....I started going over some design books....looking at my stash of fabric.......and I came up with a quilt similar in contruction to the Canadain geoquilt (made entirely of half square triangles and in 2 colors. I have chosen a "From sea to shinning sea" theme and so want blue and yellow to be the major colors. Cachers would sign in the sunshine - yellow triangles. This can work much as the first one did but with some lessons added from my Canadain project. I would like to enlist a few ...maybe 2 to 6 cachers to help with the distribution, placement location and retrieval portion. Plus if we could get a computer literate person to help with the picture piece of it......pictures of the blocks...idea of how the quilt will look and a map of where blocks are placed (as majbach did for the Canadain site) that would be excellant.....My part will be in providing the fabric, cutting all the triangles...something like 500 in this one.......sewing the blocks, ironing them on paper to be signed and then sending off the packets to the 6 that will be the "senders". Maybe we could devide the states into regions and do it that way......Also could have a world portion if there is enough response........ So what do you think? The last one was started in the fall.....this in the mid to late spring with a finish date of around August.....my paid work load is less then.....so more time to sew.....at least at night when I'm not caching I'm interested to see what kind of response we get this time.....the first was great as is the one in Canada now....... 8. Hey! We were with 300mag when he discovered the cache missing........After all the time we spend making up caches it just feels really hurtful when people do this! Hey! It was a great area that the cache was in and the company even better We had a cache stolen. The first one we had ever placed and at the time we only had one other out. A newby posted this log that gave me the willys......he said that he placed a treasure box in the cache and that the only way you could find out what was inside was by finding the cache....Man I envisioned all kind of herendous things.....So fearless went out immediately and the box was gone......The kids flet really mad as we had jointly decided where to put it....Sweety wanted to call the cops....... To make a long story short. Fearless and eversure walked the route again last night (we have placed another cache further down the trail) and suprisingly they found the box in the exact spot where we had left it. And the treasure box had.............pennies and a note for kids under age 8 to get pennys and over to put them in....but man was it hard to open that box DxChallenged "Have you no news on your travels?" the Book of fairy & folk tales of Ireland (1888)

  10. Hubby and I both have Garmins....he a III+ and I a V....He had thought of selling his when mine arrived but no way now.....each seems to have an area that it is better at...... III+ because of smaller memory.....the screen is easier to read. Keeps it's signal longer... Basically zeros in on cache same as mine. V way best for road trips although it frequently says that you are "off road" when you are still on the thruway or other desginated main roads... You can leave the cache area and it will still track behind you, beeps just before and at turns...for me a reall plus as I am accustom to getting lost..... Last weekend I was out on a whale watch....in a boat on the ocean with WAAS.....I pulled in 14 sats.......... anyway DxChallenged "Have you no news on your travels?" the Book of fairy & folk tales of Ireland (1888)
  11. Leaving non McD's items in caches...... We had a cache where a newby decided to leave somthing "interesting". The log read that he left a brass treasure box but that he wouldn't discloce what was unside and that you would have to find it to descover the contents.......sent out to check on the cache that day and it was gone........ I had envisioned harrific things inside the treasure box ...hey with my imagination I'm afraid to watch CSI........ Well fearless found it last night.......where is was supposed to be......... and the treasure box had penny's for only under 8 to trade..... still seems weird...... but hey the box is back! 12. Hey! Bright orange spray is for? I do have a bright orange jacket I wear in the fall. We've cached during target practice and all the while prayed we weren't the target! I also bring in with me a paper print out of the cache....more than once we have entered the wrong coordinates or forgotten the details. BUG SPRAY deticking is no fun... 13. Hey! We saw around 6 whales...some minkys and humbacks....The hbacks did bubble feeding and at one point as he pushed the water out of his teeth...we got to see his whole head and he looked like he was smiling...at that point a seagull landed on his head..... Sorry but I took the low end digital and missed the shot altogether...... The trip and my daughter's bday party yesterday have finally taken their toll on me....I'm so tired I feel like I'm spinning (is that what they mean by dizzy blonde?) I even messed up the coordinates on our new cache (it has sound and a px...) .....so no work for the rest of the night....will just sit and veg as I sew..... Quilting is like auto pilot for me...... 15. 16. Hey! So THE HOBBIT BAG - END CACHE is official. Just finished.....with the help from another cacher/tolkien fan.....adding music and a picture of bag end colored by Butterfly girl. I posted this cache on her 11th birthday...... I'm pleased with this cache! It is placed in an area with an interesting geologic formation....I believe that it is called a terminal morain...it's where a glacier stopped..there are 3 types of rocks in that site because of the formation, beautiful wild trilliums, tree formations that look like dragons (beware of Smaug) and the best prizes that we have placed to date. You'de have to read the riddles on each bag to know the contents...but there is a small bag of silver, some nice stones such as amber and items that go along with the Tolkien book...The Hobbit..... One of the 4 Tolkien quilt blocks (as mentioned in the Tolkine quilt Cache) is contained in the cache......so to date there are 2 of the 4 caches out there that you would need to complete to receive the mini signature quilt......So how many cachers do you think would choose to finish all? A handful? Or perhaps I should get sewing now! 18. Hey! Wanna check out my latest quilt project? I just posted and tweeked THE HOBBIT - BAG END CACHE. A fellow cacher helped me so this one has a picture hand colored by Butterfly girl, it was posted today..her birthday, has the best prizes we have placed yet (you'de have to solve the riddles on the bags to guess but there is a small bag of silver, some nice stone including amber and items that go along with the Tolkien theme all in Scottish plaid bags)... Anyway the quilt part.....I put a block from the Tolkien quilt.....the other 3 will be in caches that correspond to the Lord of the Rings books in Erie PA area......people who complete all 4 caches will recieve a small signature quilt of their own (see the Tolkien Virtual Cache in NY). I don't think that there will be many who choose to do all......maybe a hand full.... ya think... Better oil up the sewing machine!! Hey, I've got to do something while the Canadian geoquilt is signed! DxChallenged "Have you no news on your travels?" the Book of fairy & folk tales of Ireland (1888)

  22. Hey! It would be great to have more caches in my area!!! I just posted my best cache to date......THE HOBBIT - BAG END CACHE. It is a cache that links to the Fellowship of the Ring cache in Erie PA, has a geoquilt project attached and contains the best prizes we have placed yet. I have a small bag of silver jewlery, some nice stones, current CDs and items that go along with the Tolkien theme. Our second cache.....C & S Eversures cache was my first approved by the commisioner of the Erie County parks department......I had to write a 12 page presentation for that one explaing geocaching and what we as a family would do to maintaine our cache....... We also have the Akron Bike Path cache ...it is a replacement for the one that was stolen on the same path....somebody trapped all over private land...asked a renter how to get on the path and I think that cacher was followed by the renter and the cache then stolen.....so for the replacement cache we put the parking coordinates in the bdy of the report...rather than a clue...sent a picture of the parking lot and described the cache as being off a black topped bike path........ Currently I have to reserve my caching to the weekends as the closest that i haven't done are in Rochester........so Dekaner.....please hid away! If you want we could team up to get some publicity....Buffalo News or one of the TV channels.....I currently have a geoquilt project on Canada that is going very well....blocks to be sent to all provinces. 2 cachers from Ottawa are helping me with it........ e-mail me with any questions ect..... 25. So you're not going to believe this......I have material with trout on it! Whenever I go on vacation I try to pick up interesting bits of fabric....I found the fish piece while in NC. I started sewing some of the blocks today...but won't get any more done until next week. I am on my way out the door to go on a whale watch with my son and 100 other 6th graders. I just got the zip code of the place we're staying at so I'm hoping to do at least one cache while there....NOt sure though as the teacher has a marathon site seeing trip planned....... Stay tuned Dx "Have you no news on your travels?" the Book of fairy & folk tales of Ireland (1888)
