  1. Ok... A new must for the list. We are currently in the south for a caching vaction while on the way to Grandmothers house in NC. We did a cache 2 days ago where we were the unwilling mode of transportation for hundreds of ticks. Checked, rechecked, flicked, sprayed, prayed and tryed showering them off. Did a darned good job of getting almost all...I found one attched to me yesterday.... So to the list...bug spray...hats in the backpack for when you are disturbing the bush...reminders to wear light colored pants and a picture of a tick. To show to the kids that don't want spray on... The picture helps with compliance while you spray prior to entering the trail. Dx "Have you no news on your travels?" the Book of fairy & folk tales of Ireland (1888)
  2. So the story continues....I must say that we did a very good job in tick removal. Checked everyone in the group several times. We stopped while on route back to the hotel to throw ticks off. Once we got to our room everyone sat on the balcony and priority was given as far as shower order, to the ones with the most ticks removed. I was third in the shower in a line of 5. I think that we had close to 90% removal rate....The one we missed I found yesterday I reached around my side, dug at this thing I couldn't see. Dug a bit more. It came off in my fingernail. About 1/8". Still moving I screamed.... So now that I've calmed down...My question is. Is there anything that I should do now? I know that these are supposed to be removed with medicine...or a end of a match just blown out...but I didn't know what it was...anything I should put on the site...little red mark? We drive to my parents today. My Dad's had many a bite. He'll know what to do...but I'de also welcome any info you might have..... 4. Clothes and ticks...so fearless leader says to me as we were walking out of the brush "Ya know the ticks stick on to our clothing. So if we didn't have any on we wouldn't have the ticks." Is this true? (I ask as I sit here itching my head) Hawkeye...I found your card in the first cache we did and saved it. I've read your postings often and thought that the card would be a nice addition to my cacheing bag. Dx "Have you no news on your travels?" the Book of fairy & folk tales of Ireland (1888)

  6. I'm wondering how many people have been attacked by ticks while geocaching... Today we most definatley were! Last weekend we were in a park in Erie PA where they had tick warning signs at every trail head. We used tick spray last week but today the group scoffed at me and bounded down the trail with naria a waft of bug spray. We spent our morning looking for a cache in NC. On other cache we puposely removed travelors but up until today we were never the mode of transportation for a mass exidus. My family and I are from Western NY. We left home on Saturday to go on a caching vacation to end at my mom's house in Bolivia, NC. We headed out to our second cache just as the heat was starting to go up (30s at home near 80 while we cached). Stayed on the main trail for quite a bit and then, as guided by the GPS, darted off on a path less taken. A bit of "whoa", "hot", "thwank", "ouch" and "is that a tick?" could be heard from various members of the group. Eversure and I found the cache box right off. We traded items and the cache was in fine shape....but we weren't once we had finished our trip out of the bush.... We renamed the cache, at least for our group...Moutain Tick Trap....because we unleased a virtual horde of the nasty beasties. We took a different path out as usually we find a quicker way out than in. While traversing this, a lot more less taken path, we discovered many shrubby bushes and brambles....Well there must have been ticks laying in massing waiting for unsuspecting humans. As a matter of fact butterfly girl (who had never seen a tick before) commented "I have spiders all over my arms". She says she pushed 10 to 20 off her. Once we got out into the main path we all began to remove ticks...this we continued to do on the walk out, were the van was parked, as we administered after the fact spray, while in the car (I had one crawling up my stomach), in the parking lot, on the balcony of our hotel room and then found them slipping down the drain as we each took a shower....we will always, always, ALWAYS put on bug spray when we go geocaching! So what's your tick story like? Dx BTW I think I am experiencing parasympathetic feelings...I can see no ticks but feel them crawling on me as I sit here typing "Have you no news on your travels?" the Book of fairy & folk tales of Ireland (1888) [This message was edited by DxChallenged on March 27, 2002 at 04:20 AM.]

  8. Off...deep woods I think...Orange can...unscented but had a nast smell. Perhaps that's why the tick was so sluggish in the car...Just sat on the LOTR book....Suppose that I could have put a piece of tape on him, secured him to the cover of the book and had a sovenier Dx "Have you no news on your travels?" the Book of fairy & folk tales of Ireland (1888)

  10. Hey! I know what you mean about the bugs. We were in Erie last weekend. Had been warned by the cache owner several times about ticks. So I went and bought the appropriate spray..Family scoffed at me but I sprayed them anyway. On the way out of the park for lunch I discovered a tick on the book I had while I cached (it was a book ref. cache). family didn't laugh after that!! Now we are in Harrisburg and the spray came with us... April is sounding better and better! Dx "Have you no news on your travels?" the Book of fairy & folk tales of Ireland (1888)

Plan on going to Harrisburg PA and Raleigh on the way and cache there. Rybren Thanks for the info. My 2 oldest kids we adopted from Columbia SA. We've been told that we have to take their citizenship papers with us and that they have to be the ever so large originals...illegial to make a copy....... cliffy and 300mag...Maybe we'll make a trip up your way in April or May (1/2 the family's birthday is in May!). There is a cache not to far with my name on it....Hilton (virtual)...I've just gotta check that one out........ I'm currently working on 2 caching quilt projects...One is for the Rochester area cache event June 1 and the other is a joint project for the Lord of the Rings cache/s with a virtual to be tied to it. Thanks again for the info!! Dx "Have you no news on your travels?" the Book of fairy & folk tales of Ireland (1888)
  14. Ok so this wasn't while I was geocacheing but definatley related. My first job as speech thereapist was in Mission SD. I lived in Mission SD in the middle of the Rosebud reservation. Very beautiful but sparsely populated place. I was responsible for driveing to 5 of the reservation schools....I drove an orange austin marina that my Dad had fixed up for me; it was the best car ever but I was a rather new driver. The terrain in Mission was a mix of flat, very hilly and sandy such that roads at times would wash out. Well one day I was on my way to the Rosebud school. I had to drive up a very stiff incline, in my stick shift (on winter days had to race up or else would not make it to the top and end up sliding down).......So on this spring day I made it 3/4 of the way up the hill to the blind side...I couldn't see what was at that point until I arrived. What was there was the largest bull buffalo I had ever seen in my life and 2 or 3 of his buddies. And I am in this orange car wondering if a bull buffalo would charge like a bull cow when presented with red...and that I can't go off the road because there was a drop...in a split second I decided to go for it...and gunned it past the buffalo....... whoa that was 20 years ago and my heart started racing again just thinking about it "Have you no news on your travels?" the Book of fairy & folk tales of Ireland (1888) [This message was edited by DxChallenged on March 23, 2002 at 06:02 PM.]

  16. You know there was a post about a month or so ago about explaining geocaching.....This most clever person posted the note on the thread and sized it up so that it could be printed on 1/2 a page of card stock and given out......... I just wish that I could remember exactly what the topic of it was so I could print some up. I sport the messenger bag that jeremy had for sale, while I'm working. Been stopped many times ot explain the sport and eventually end up going all the way back to "onstar" to explain the GPS part........I'de love to have that geocaching card... 18. First cache that we ever did we found toilet paper...the kind with money printed on it.. Then we found what we thought to be ear plugs only to discover that they were mini chess pieces put in an ear plug case. A few weeks back it wasn't what we found in the cache but behind it. Cache was cleverly placed inside a bird feader. HIgh and dry but behind it was a magazine of adult nature which was opened to one of the picture pages......... kids found that cache. We were alerted by the looks on their faces...removed the magazine and notified the owner who felt that it was vandilized....and hopefully not by the cachers previous to us... 22. Hey! Yes geocaching is our family sport too! Actually I am amazed at myself because it is the first organized sport that I enjoy...I was very uncorrodinated in high school... We are getting ready for our Easter vacation. We're going to cache on the way to and from my parents house 1300 miles from here.....Made not taking a plane the prefered option..... Have a great Easter! I may not have internet access but already have the caches printed and ready to go!! 23. The verilux lenses are the greatest!!! At first I fet a bit dizzy...I used to be blond ..but think that the dizziness was getting used to the lenses...now instead of thinking of the glasses as of equal value to a large kitchen appliance....I think of them as pure gold....... 29 eh...I was in Columbia adopting my first 2 kids at that age...it's all relative....but I'm still not putting the year on my bday profile Dx "Have you no news on your travels?" the Book of fairy & folk tales of Ireland (1888)
